Help in choosing a new AVR: Onkyo NR609 or Onkyo NR809?

Hello,
I currently have an Onkyo TX-NR708. However, I am dealing with a bunch of problems with it in the last 3 months and decided to replace it for a new receiver.
I have 5 speakers at my home theatre room (100W, 8 Ohms) and 4 speakers at my living room (2 speakers, 100W, 8Ohms) and at my balcony (2 speakers, 100W, 8Ohms). I like to control the AVR on my iPhone and on my iPad.
The question I have is: shall I get the 609 or the 809? I do not live in the US, but I am going to visit the country next week and plan to buy it there (it is much more expensive in my country). Which one should I buy? I was very happy with the quality of the 708 - a nice replacement (That works!) would be great.
Best regards,
gpm

So, your 708 has a bunch of problems and you're happy with the quality.

If you're looking for a receiver with problems, then Onkyo is for you.

The two receivers are basically the same except the 809 has more features. You can go to www.onkyo.com and compare the features and decide if the extra features of the 809 are worth the extra cost.

Thanks. Yes, I am happy with the quality and very happy with oRemote, a software to control it over the network. This is one of the reasons I will try another Onkyo.

I might go with the 609 - any other inputs, please?

The 809 is the much better AVR and IMO worth the price difference. It is more flexible and it also has the much better version of Audyssey. Even the 709 is better buy than the 609. Why is it not on your list? There is a big jump between the 609 and 809. Preouts on the 709 and 809, along with the better Audyssey would make me change between the 609 and the other two.

The 709 is not on my list as I saw some reported problems with this AVR on Onkyo website, similar to the ones I have with the 708. THese problems are not reported for the 609 or 809.

All makes and models have their problems. You were unlucky enough to purchase into Onkyos worst ever with the X08/008 series. Seems that most of those were fixed with the 09's. I wouldn't purchase any Onkyo at this time. And I have two of them at home. Older models that both still work. As I've stated elsewhere why take a chance on a company with QC problems when there are so many other options out there. But if it's Onkyo you want then I would get the 809 over the 609, easily, due to my prior suggestions.

They're basically the same in the same sense that the Toyota Yaris and Toyota Camry are basically the same.

I haven't heard of many problems with the 709's. You may want to poke around the 709 owners thread and get their feedback. Unless, of course, the price difference doesn't matter. In that case just get the 809. It's 2" deeper than the 709 and 4" deeper than the 609, so make sure you have room in your cabinet for it first.
