Top five 5.1 Wish List for 2012

What is at the top of your wish list of 5.1 releases for 2012? My top five:

1. Yes - Close to the Edge (The Yes Album and Tales from Topographic Oceans are right up there also, but if I can only choose one Yes, this is the holy grail).

2. Led Zeppelin - II (hard to choose between I, II and IV, but again, only one Zeppelin makes the list).

3. Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick (the best Tull album in 5.1, a no-brainer).

4. Frank Zappa - Joe's Garage (it would sound incredible in surround).

5. Pink Floyd - Animals (now that we have WYWH in 5.1, this needs to get done. The Wall gets honorable mention).

Although it would not be in my top 5, apparently Thick as a Brick has been mixed into 5.1 and will be released in 2012. My top five would share your #1 and #5, but I would also love to see Supertramp Crime of the Century, anything from Alan Parsons Project and Pat Metheny Secret Story.

#1. Abbey Road - this one just inches out Sgt. Peppers
#2. Led Zep IV - of course, any Led Zep would do.
#3. Benefit - Jethro Tull. I would love Thick as a Brick, but this is more accessible.
#4. Are You Experienced - Barely ahead on the finish line with Electric Ladyland.
#5. Who's Next - Can't leave a list without having the Who.

That is a great list, though I'd toss Jethro Tull and insert Deep Purple - Deep Purple. (Since this is a Wish List I can pretend there's a master tape somewhere that doesn't suck.)

Passion Play
Animals
Funeral - Arcade Fire
Hail To The Thief - Radiohead
Still Life - Van Der Graaf Generator (any of the classic VdGG would make my year; Steven Wilson are you listening?)

This could easily be my next 5. I'd maybe even be tempted to knock out Zappa for Who's Next on my top 5, and I'm not sure how I could have left off Abbey Road. No one's mentioned OK Computer yet, also just missed my cut.

Being that we're wishing here, I've alway thought the following albums would be great in 5.1

1) Tool Aenima, or pretty much anything else
2) Pink Floyd The Wall, boy do I wish this one would pop up some time in the next 6 month or so!
3) Radio Head In Rainbows I'm just in love with this album, I think it's so romantic in it's own way.
4) Sara Tavares Balance, I have a friend that know the artist mother. I joke around and tell her to tell her moms to tell her daughter to realest this album in sacd..My friend doesn't even know what the hell i"m taking about, there's this strange look at the end of the conversation..
5) Skinny Puppy Rabies, I just love this album from start to finish..I know it may not be for everyone but I think it deserves some sort of hi rez treatment, I spend my late teen years listeing to this master piece, even went to see them do this. I believe they had broke up and got back together right after the release of Rabies, took so much out of the band.

That's my list and I'm sticking to it..

I would hope to see in 5.1 on any format:

1. Dire Straits: Love Over Gold

2. Steely Dan: Katy Lied, The Royal Scam, Can't Buy A Thrill, Pretzel Logic and Countdown To Ecstasy. These count as one because all these titles will be released in one box set.

3. Pink Floyd: Animals

4. Santana: Caravanserai

5. Traffic: The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys

Of course many more I could think of but these are ones of the top of my head.

1. Santana/Abraxas (or Live at the Fillmore)
2. Eric Johnson/Ah Via Musicom (mixed with EJ's blessing )
3. Dream Theater/Images and Words
4. Alice In Chains/Unplugged
5. The Mars Volta/Frances The Mute (a heavy, slightly obscure favorite of mine)

Bonus...
*anything, everything, or more from: Steve Ray Vaughan, Miles Davis, Peter Gabriel, The Grateful Dead, The Rolling Stones, The Police, Radiohead, Led Zeppelin, and Bob Marley.

More stuff from Beck
Pretty much any Thievery Corporation album
Alan Parsons Project's I, Robot and Pyramid
Sigur Ros
Blue Oyster Cult's Fire Of Unknown Origin
Animal Collective
BB's Hello Nasty, Check Your Head, The In Sound From Way Out!
Art Of Noise's In Visible Silence, The Seduction Of Claude Debussy
Madonna's Immaculate Collection - hey it's quality pop!
DJ Shadow's Endtroducing and Private Press
Mark Isham's album Vapor Drawings, before new age got boring*
Thomas Dolby's The Golden Age of Wireless

I havemore suggestions but those are a good start.

* this track On The Threshold Of Liberty, NOT boring, would be so very cool in surround. Isham is responsible for the music for several very well known movies

Anything Enya............all of the layers of her music with expanded soundstage could be an incredible thing. There is alot of music there to push through just 2 speakers. Her skills really need to be revealed more.
Besides the Floyd, the only surround piece that I know I can actually look forward to in the coming year is King Crimson Larks Tongue...
OK lots of good choices above I'll add a few.

I'd take Sgt Peppers over Abbey Road although Abbey Road is my favorite Beatles album. I just think Pepper would lend itself better to the format. At least we have the Love DVD-A.

For the Who give me all of Quadrophenia first and then Who's Next.

For Zep I think Physical Graffiti is a no brainer, although I and II would be good choices also.

How about some of the later Stones stuff? I'd leave most of their early classic stuff alone, although the Symphony for the Devil remix was pretty cool. I'm thinking Tattoo You or Some Girls (missed opportunity there with the new Deluxe version).

For Jimi I'll take Electric Ladyland.

Dire Straits - Love Over Gold is a great choice but I always thought Making Movies the way the songs segue just screams for 5.1.

Pretty much any Radiohead or Arcade Fire would work for me.

Holt - Check out Mars Volta's first album De-Loused in the Comatorium too.

Uh Oh getting carried away. Five new ones:
Massive Attack - Mezzanine
Moby - Go
My Morning Jacket - Z
Brian Eno - Here Come the Warm Jets or any of his later ambient albums.
Dead Can Dance - Come on they did the entire catalog in stereo SACDs. Their music would be great as M/C.

I know he's pretty busy, but I wonder if SW will ever go back and remix these in 5.1?

Absolutely +1 (or is that .1?)

another couple Enya jewels that would be truly remarkable:

Pax Deorum

Tempus Vernum

Beatles Revolver onwards would be great. I also want Alan Parsons, The Wall, Boston, more Fleetwood Mac, Vangelis, and Jean-Michel Jarre. Some classic Stones too, that Sympathy taster was quite excellent. Whatever we get, please make it immersive and discrete. More Scheiner and Parsons like, not ambient, smearie or Guthrie DSOTM. Pet Sounds was an abortion and waste of time.

No love for Michael Jackson's Thriller? It's been partially, if not completely, remixed for 5.1 SACD already.

Heck I'll take it, rather than pay 300 for it in simple 2ch

I don't know their entire catalog, but one that I am familiar with, World Record, would also be a choice candidate for surround.
Since we're just wishing, I would like to add:

CSN - Their first albumn and
CSNY - Deja Vu
and how about a little Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow.
Anything by Kate Bush! If I had to pick one title it would be HOUNDS OF LOVE. Probably not as far fetched as one may think because Kate just did her own remaster of THE RED SHOES. It was done with the original half analogue masters on her new label. It sounds much improved over the original digital release.
please take my rambling with a grain of salt......

too bad Alison Krauss didn't do a 5.1 Paper Airplane. (even though the redbook stereo is wonderfully mastered) New Favorite is tops.

Al Stewart? Supertramp BIA? Roth era Van Halen would be fun.

Def Leppard Hysteria, Pyromania.

Kansas Leftoverture? plenty of layers to be revealed....I think this one would be absolutely killer with correct mastering

Satriani, Eric Johnson............too bad they abandoned the format

I think he was asked or someone in his circles, and the answer was "no plans" or something like that, but one can hope he changes his mind. I certainly do.

+1 for the Dream Theater requests.

Also Ayreon - The Human Equation
Rush - Hemispheres
Savatage - Dead Winter Dead
Liquid Tension Experiment

Anything by Harry Nilsson
Heaven Or Las Vegas - Cocteau Twins
Hector Zazou - Sahara Blue
Fever Ray - Fever Ray
Royksopp - Melody A.M.
Lisa Gerrard - The Mirror Pool

Ok, ok... not so commercial hits but outstanding music.

Ah I almost forget: multichannel, stereo hybrid SACD or nothing!

=)

Good choice! I'm a little more partial to Godbluff and Still Life from their second generation. There are many Genesis (Gabriel), King Crimson, Yes and Pink Floyd clones, but only one Van Der Graaf Generator (like there is only one Jethro Tull).

The following were some of the potential candidates that Steven Wilson himself selected for surround sound treatment in a magazine (whose name I forget) interview:

ABBA: Arrival
KATE BUSH: Hounds of Love, The Dreaming, Aerial
ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA: Out of the Blue
PETER GABRIEL: Peter Gabriel (Security)
MARVIN GAYE: What's Going On
JAPAN: Tin Drum
LED ZEPPELIN: Led Zeppelin IV
MASSIVE ATTACK: Mezzanine
MY BLOODY VALENTINE: Loveless
PINK FLOYD: Animals
PRINCE: Sign o' the Times
RADIOHEAD: OK Computer
TALK TALK: Laughing Stock
XTC: Skylarking
YES: Close to the Edge, Fragile (he probably didn't care for the existing 5.1 Fragile)
FRANK ZAPPA: Joe's Garage, Acts I, II & III

Sadly he never mentioned VdGG. Since it wasn't guitar-driven prog-rock, perhaps it is understandable. But the dual sax, organ, drumming & brilliant vocals cry out for a 5.1 airing.
