Midrange AVR choice: Marantz, Denon, Yamaha, Onkyo

Thread Starter
I'm putting a new system into a 15 x 20 x 8 room, which plays louder because of large openings to other rooms. I've bought the Hsu VTF-15, HB-1 and HC-1 as the start of the system. I had originally ordered, and have received the pioneer 1021 - but have seen a lot of negative reviews here. My current receiver is an outdated but serviceable Onkyo 601 - 8 yrs old. After spending days on the forum, I'm afraid I'm no closer to making a choice. Primary use will be home theater - I do listen to music, a lot, but I'm not an audiophile.

Onkyo 709 - every bell and whistle imaginable, but a lot of quality issues. My own Onkyo has its own issues - stuttering at full surround at high volume. I can't watch Avatar - the unit shuts itself off. Because of this, I think I've already crossed off the list. $800 range

Pioneer Elite - VSX 51, $599 at Amazon. I understand this has a superior video chip to the Marantz, below. I can't really get a read on overall quality, and, sin

Yamaha A810 or 871 - doesn't use Audyssey system, but since I'm not really an audiophile, this doesn't bother me too much. However, there is no EQ control over the sub, so this does bother me. A810 has better warranty, but the 871 is being found on sale at sub$500 range, so it's several hundred less.

Marantz 6006 - $1099. Best sound quality, worst video chip. Small screen to see what you're doing. Highest price. Last year's versions are more affordable, but you can't do your own firmware upgrade - so you have to keep on paying the man!

Denon 3312 $1099. High price. I can't see how it is substantially better than the Marantz - in fact, I think most posters here like the marantz better.

I don't particularly care about AirPlay, since I already have apple tv I'm using this with a Sony Bravia that gets internet music (Pandora, etc..), so I can use an optical connection to go from the TV to the AVR, so an internet equipped AVR is not a must. However, I would like it to be networkable. I can spend $500 or $1000 - but I am having a hard time seeing what the extra $500 gets me. Can someone save me from going blind reading posts and reviews?

Denon & Marantz are basically the same receiver.
I personally have the denon avr-3312 and would recommend it. I am very pleased with mine. I'm not an audiophile and didnt stay at a holiday inn express last night so take my thoughts with a grain of salt.
The others I don't have any experience with.

Newegg has Yamaha's a3000, their top of the line for $899 right now. It's near the top of your $ range but it's fully featured. I know my a3010 has parametric eq for all speakers and I can't imagine the a3000 would be any different. I've always had good results with Yamaha's Ypao setup. Its a hell of a deal. Wish I would've been in on it. I paid 1800 for my a3010 which is very mild refresh od the a3000.

The 3000 at newegg is a tough deal to beat. I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think any version of YPAO eq's the subwoofer.

It absolutely does. The subwoofer(or two if you run them) is tested if you do them with the lfe connection. Obviously it can't if you do speaker level. And you can go in and manually adjust the eq after Ypao has ran. That's how it is on my a3010 and I can't imagine it would be different on the a3000.

It really is right up your alley. It doesn't do airplay(it does with an optional adapter) and it is totally networked. Even has a nice little free iPad/iPod app that works very well.

My 2 canadian cents: Why are you comparing the Onkyo 709 vs the SR6006?
SR5006 would be a much closer match, and fall in the price range.

I scored an SR5006 locally (brick and mortar store) for 750$ tx in. And, that's in Canada, the land of rip-off. I'm sure you can find for sub 700$ if you're in the US.

You said video up conversion wasn't a deal maker or breaker, it certainly doesn't make the image "worse", and it performs extermely well for all your other criterias.

Hello,
If you can still get an A3000 for that price, I would absolutely go with that. I would also consider the Onkyo TX-NR809 from Newegg. It adds the HQV Vida Processor that is also used in the A3000. I would imagine Newegg is offering an amazing price on it.

What I like about the Onkyo is that it offers Audyssey's MultEQ XT as opposed to Yamaha's proprietary YPAO. While both are quite good, Audyssey really can works wonders on the Subwoofer whereas YPAO does not work below 60hz if memory serves.
Cheers,

Other thing to mention is the Marantz SR6006 employs Audyssey's MultEQ XT Pro

The A3000 works on the sub eq down to approx. 30hz. And it is indeed on sale at Newegg. Excellent price for one of those.

Phantom,
I again would absolutely go with the A3000. I just threw out the 809 as the price is quite good and the x09's seem to produce less heat and initial reports have been positive. While I prefer the A3000 if I was purchasing it, I just wanted to give other ideas as well. Also, I am so glad to read that YPAO goes all the way down to 30hz. That is awesome and Yamaha makes such trouble free AVR's that it really takes away my one reservation about Yamaha (YPAO)
Cheers,

I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on the 3000 as well. I'm not an audiophile and have limited knowledge of the technologies as I have not done much research but am in need of an upgrade to my (dare I admit it) mid 80's Kenwood which still works great but lacks many of the newer bells and whistles. I know it's a great deal currently but then I think about all the other things I could buy if I did not go for the 3000!! Happy Tgiving!
