I'm not quite sure where you are on the final decision, but I would urge you to consider PSB speakers (made in Canada!), which are very hard to beat; excellent sound quality! ( I have had the PSB Image T6 tower speakers for about a year now; just wonderful speakers...$1300).
You can get four of the PSB Alpha B1 speakers (simply amazing for the price) for your front and rear for $500, and add a sub and have a fantastic-sounding system. I would consider the Mordaunt-Short Carnival 9 subwoofer if I were in your position, which is available for about $450. Check out the Audio Advisor website FYI for specs and details.
As for receivers, I am sold on Onkyo; they just sound SOOOO good! The low-level distortion of Yamaha, Denon, Pioneer, and others in that class give me a headache after a while. Onkyo is very distortion-free; no grainy sound.
I suggest that you go to the Onkyo website and check out the HT-RC360 receiver, which is 7.2 at 100w/ch, has the Audessy room correction software and setup mike, and bells and whistles galore, for $549. That one should float your boat!
So let's see; that's an excellent system for $549 plus about $950 for the 5 speakers= $1500 total. What's not to like?? (lol)
P.S.-amplifier distortion specs are meaningless! They are derived by testing with a sinewave tone and a resistor load, which is like "test-driving" a car without ever putting it in gear. In the real world, with MUSIC in the amplifier and a SPEAKER for a load, distortion is hundreds of times higher than those specs would lead the uninformed to believe (and which varies considerably among amplifiers)!

I can get both sets for about the same price which speakers would you go with?
I was set to get the Dennon 2112CI for $499 but can also get a yamaha rx A 2000 for $899.
An extra $400 is a bit of leap up in price would the Yamaha be enough of a jump to make it worth it for either of those speaker sets?
