A short-er center channel?

There are plenty of post on this subject, but I still figured I would ask again in case some one has a new insight.

I recently purchased a Pioneer VSX-1021-K and am upgrading my speaker config around my 42" plasma (gradually moving from 2.1->3.1->5.1->7.1). I would really like to run a a center channel, and like the value of sony speakers (2 bookshelves for my L/R), but their center is 7" high which is too high (I think ~5" is best).

Solutions:
- raise my TV and buy the sony center
- find a different brand center and pair it with the same brand L/R

Anyone have a great LCR solution?

Raising the tv is a good option. However I would give some other speaker brands a chance. Look at BIC Formula series at sounddesign.com, Polk Monitor series at newegg.com, Infinity Primus speakers, etc.

I'm getting ready to raise my TV to accommodate a significantly higher center than I had been using (7 1\\2 vs 4 1\\2). It is a small, one-time, inconvenience for what should be a great increase in long-term, sound quality.

I have found you can substitute your center for anything out there as long as you are willing to give up quality dialogue.

How much are you willing to lose and still be happy?

What was 4.5" tall?

Also, Dr_Mark, I would prefer not to lose anything, but since I don't have a center channel even now (and the MCACC with the Pioneer should compensate), anything will be a plus. But, it would be nice to have a nice solution that would fit without raising the TV.

Just measured and 5 to 5.5" is the highest once could be.

I found something like this Intimus Center Channel, but then if I have to start matching to this brand I may never get my speakers. I like the affordability and apparently solid quality of the sony's.

Thoughts?

Definitive Technology's ProCenter 1000 measures 14-3/4" W x 5" D x 5" H. They make matching bookshelf speakers too

It's a Polk RM2600 center, part of a Polk satellite/sub system.

I have the Sony speakers and while they are not audiophile grade speakers, they sound pretty good and are some of the best bang for buck you can find in low-end speakers. You just need to make sure they are being powered properly. The pioneer you bought should be sufficient. And the MCACC should allow you to get the best performance you can out of the speakers.

If you are coming from tv speakers, these speakers will sound great to you. Don't be afraid to shop around though. While the sonys are some of the best deals out there (and buy them on amazon, not sony style...they'll be even cheaper) there are still other speakers that are affordable that may sound even better than they sony speakers.
