Denon 1612 Configuration

I haven't been able to get all that i want out of my outlaw sub so i contacted the manufacturer and they asked that I turn audessey off and describe the sound...is there a menu setting to do so on denon receivers, or do i need to restore to default settings?

also, i hit standby on my remote and now everytime i turn the receiver on, the on button flashes and it takes me a minute of button mashing to get it going...how do i turn standby mode off?

thanks for the assistance and expertise!

Before discounting Audyssey, confirm you have the sub setup correctly by reviewing the Audyssey Setup Guide in my sig.

You can set the MultEQ setting to OFF (p. 54).

As far as Standby is concerned, the unit either goes into Standby or ON depending on the button pressed.

Also note, there is a dedicated Denon XX12 Owner's thread linked in my sig for more info on your 1612.

I didn't use that guide, but I did use a guide posted here...first run through it registered -12Db, so I lowered volume and it was +2.5 Db. I think its configured correctly. I'm just not getting the booming effect i want for music so Outlaw is trying to help me troubleshoot it by seeing how it sounds in comparison with Audessey off.

Thanks for the tips.

In regards to standby mode, when I use the regular power button on the remote, it will no longer turn on...i hit standby again and it flashes and then i just start pressing every power button until it turns on. It used to just turn on without all that mess, before i pressed standby - that singular button press has ruined my life.

After running AUTO SETUP did you reset your front mains to SMALL with 80hz crossovers as is suggested? Try unplugging the AVR for about 10 minutes to see if that resolves the Standby/ON issue and if not, then reset the microprocessor (p. 94).

yes, my speakers are set to small...my crossover is 120Hz, since I have nano sat speakers

thanks, if i unplug will I need to re-run auddesey?

any other suggestions on getting more punch from my outlaw sub with my denon rcvr?

what modes do you use for music?
any other settings i could fiddle with?

You can always just boost the sub channel a few db via the remote control "CH LVL" button as doing so won't effect the Audyssey filters. Also you may want to try the sub crawl for ideal placement of the sub in your room.

yea, ive done the db adjustments..its not volume thats lacking, but punch.

outlaw leads me to believe it may be a crossover issue. i have crossover set to out on my sub, and crossover on my receiver set to 120Hz as far as i know...i've seen 2 different screens that mention crossover - one that has a single number listing, and another that has front, center and rear that can be adjusted individually...but i don't recall seeing a subwoofer specific setting..i just assumed if i set the general crossover on the receiver to 120, the sounds below it would filter to the sub..is that correct?

The 120hz sub "crossover" is not a crossover at all ... rather it's the Low Pass Filter for the LFE (0.1) signal (LPF for LFE) which, by setting it to 120hz (actually this is the factory default setting and should be left as is) just means the entire LFE (0.1) signal will pass through to the AVR. The individual speaker "crossovers" are indeed crossovers, which as you indicated are set to 120hz (is this what AUTO SETUP set them too?) and will pass any audio below 120hz to the sub.

Is this sub new to your setup or have you used it before with another AVR to know that it's currently not "punchy" enough?

auto had set them to 120Hz except one was set to 200Hz if i remember correctly. I changed them all to 120Hz though

this is new to my system..its my first real sub, but im getting better bass out of my 2005 beetle's stock stereo...well, for music at least. cant complain about the room rattling for movies.

You don't want to lower any settings as that leaves a gap in the Audyssey filtering so either raise it back up to 200hz or rerun AUTO SETUP. Keep in mind there generally isn't much bass content in 2.0 music, while a DD/DTS 5.1 movie has it's own LFE (0.1) track which is why it's so much more powerful.

ive been doing a lot of trial and error since running audessey to get the sound i want..i guess ill re-run it now and troubleshoot from a more certain place

yea, i expect that movies would have lower/more powerful bass. like i said, its not the volume or power im getting..its the type of sound. you can't really hear that vibrating thump that slapping an electric bass string makes...it gives off a very airy, muted sound instead...even $30 headphones can replicate that so im sure it is something in my settings.

i think outlaw may be right in that im missing something in the 80Hz - 150Hz range. crossover seems logical to me, but i dont know much..obviously =p
