Man choked in movie theater for disturbing the film

By Anne-Marije Rook

2011-11-28

According to the Seattle Police Department, a man was attacked while watching a movie at Majestic Bay Theatre for disturbing the film.

The police report states that the incident occurred during the five o'clock showing of Tower Heist on November 21.

The victim of the attack was watching the movie when his phone rang. After silencing his phone, the victim checked to see who had called him and the suspect, who sat a few seats over from the victim, yelled at the him to turn off his phone.

Five minutes later, the victim received another phone call and the suspect yelled at him again.

At some point during the movie, the victim spoke to himself and the suspect told him to keep his mouth shut.
The suspect then left the theater twice, brushing the victim's legs as he walked past him.

When the suspect returned to his seat the second time, he grabbed the victim's throat with both hands. The victim stated that he couldn't breathe and tried to pull his attacker's hands off him. The attack lasted for about 30 seconds and the suspect
subsequently grabbed his backpack from his seat and left the theater.

While the officer did not observe any visible injury, three witnesses confirmed the attack.

The incident was referred to the Seattle Law Department for assault.

By reputation, Brett Ratner is more likely the guy constantly answering his phone during the movie.

A few years ago, I was at a theatre watching Up In the Air. About 20 minutes into the film a group of teenagers snuck in and sat in the front row where nobody else sat, but where everyone could see them. They wouldn't stop talking and laughing amongst each other. Then they started using their phones so the light was flashing up at us. After 5 minutes of this distracting behavior, I yelled, "Stop disturbing the theatre!" They laughed. So I grabbed my slush drink, went down to them and poured it over their heads. They turned and looked at me and I said, "Get the F*** out!" and they left. Personally, I can not stand people disturbing others while watching a movie. I'm going to open a theatre one day and anyone who consistently disrupts a showing will be removed.

I hope that the attacker is not caught. The guy got what he deserved. If he is so all important, he shouldn't go to a theater and leave his phone on - someone is hired to answer his cell. Most theaters these days have a brief message to turn off mobile devices prior to the start of the main feature. It is pretty annoying to have the bright screens of cells turn on in a darkened theater, much less have someone talk on it. I am always tempted to take my lit cell phone and stick it in front of their face and see how they like it.

are you serious?? there's a difference between yelling at someone to shut up and physically attacking a person. A moron who makes a call during a film is something, but an even more moronic person who tries to strangle him is a whole different kind of dumbass if you ask me. I once yelled at a group of teenage girls who couldn't stop laughing for no reason and speak loudly even my wife pretented she didn't know me lol. But the girls left the theater. Yet I don't think I would grab someone and attack him. Not that I wouldn't want to.

Seems to always be a knucklehead in the audience. Just last year a guy kept taking phone calls and talking without even thinking he was in a movie theater. After the third time I told him to quit taking the damn phone calls during the movie, and if they were so important to head on out of the movie.

Another time at the Irvine Spectrum I could smell cigarette smoke. I was sitting close to the back, so had a look around and a couple of punks were smoking in the very back! I then asked them if they were trying to burn the place down and to get out! Found a manager and told him what had happened, but the punks were long gone.

You are right. I wouldn't have done it, although, like you, I would have wanted to do so. There is road rage and now, apparently, theater rage.

It's really on the theater not taking control or caring what happens in their rooms. The Alamo chick should have been viral across the business. Treat your customers with respect and they'll put up with the expensive popcorn.

Theaters should take it upon themselves to ban cell phones from use, and some do. Place signs as you enter the theater, in restrooms, by the concession stand, and various other spots. And once those ads begin their repetitive rotation on the screen before the movie, include these messages...

Cell phones are banned in this theater. If you use it, you lose it.

If you are expecting an important call, maybe you shouldn’t be here to begin with.

I dont know about banning. Example Doctors, first responders. Even they need time off but if oncall they should be able to go out. I think it all about common courtesy Why cant you get a call, then say hold on and then leave to take it?

I remember where it went the other way. Man told a famliy (Mom and her 2 teenage sons) to be please be quiet during the movie. They did and when the movie was over, jumped the man afterwards.

If they’re on call then they shouldn’t be at a movie because there is a high likelihood they will be called, especially first responders. They can go during downtime like other people.

How did we receive emergency calls prior to cell phones? Doctors had pagers, otherwise, we called the theater and the manager delivered the message. To the best of my recollection that rarely happened.

We live in a time when Kathy breaks a fingernail and she needs to call or text her friends that the world has come to an end. We’re afraid we are going to miss out on something that really is of little importance to begin with.

Cellphone tech is here to stay.

Good luck trying to pry cellphones out of the claws of females....
Hell, it is hard enough to convince them to ignore the damn things while driving.
