Bad picture resolution with DVI input from laptop?

Let me start by saying that I'm not a HiDef guy at all. I spend a lot of time on my laptop, but I recently inherited a Samsung HL-P5063W from a family member and decided that I'd rather look at a big screen from the couch than a laptop at my desk.

I have a new macbook pro with a "thunderbolt" port that's supposed to support up to 2560x1600 resolution and the TV has a "native resolution" of 1280x720. I plug the macbook into the TV with a DVI cable and the picture is decent for watching movies, but terrible for surfing the internet, reading text, etc. I don't know if it's lack of resolution or what. Letters are not sharp.

Is there a way to get better resolution (maybe by using something VGA or something else instead of DVI); or is it not practical to expect to surf the internet and read text from 8 feet away on this TV?

Hi, I did a post a while back about finding modes not shown as supported by my Samsung DLP.

Since moving over to Windows 7 my drivers do not allow using modes I once had with XP. So I have kept a dual boot for such things.

I found that even though Samsung does not show 75hz support I was able to use it in PAL modes, meaning; 720 x 576.

With my Samsung connected to my laptop, the scan rate will default some of the modes at 75Hz, but will allow using 60Hz on computer resolutions at 60hz 1024×768 XGA, 1366×768 WXGA, and 1248×702.

Hope this gives some options for you.

I'm not sure I understand. Are you suggesting that I try to get a lower frame rate to get better resolution? Or a higher frame rate? Sorry, I don't know anything about audio/video.

Any idea whether switching to VGA or using a DVI->HDMI converter would help?
