Yeah, I didn't like having to repeat guided setup with my TiVos to get all the new channel info. Didn't seem like TiVo got the memo from TWC that they were changing everything. That could have gone better.

take a look at this OTA reception report:

i understand that an outdoor antenna isn't for everybody.

it's some trouble to install and setup. also, you pretty much need a tuner than can add channels without erasing the one you already scanned in.

we installed a channel master 4228, with the channel master 777 amp on a 30 foot mast (with two levels of 3 of guy wires) and a channel master rotor in a mountain cabin in woolwine, va. woolwine is north of greensboro, just south of the blue ridge parkway, close to mabry mill on the parkway. the cabin isn't on the peak of the mountains, it's about 8 miles downhill from the parkway.

these are the stations with a strong enough signal to watch. we expect to get more on good days.

4-WUNC-PBS - Chapel Hill
7-WDBJ-CBS - Roanoke
8-WGHP-FOX - High Point

12-WXII-NBC - Winston-Salem
13-WSET-ABC - Roanoke
16-WGPX-ION - Burlington
18-WCCB-FOX - Charlotte
20-WCWG-CW - Greensboro
24-WDRL-IND - Danville
26-WUNL-PBS - Winston-Salem
27-WFXR-FOX - Roanoke

43-WLXI-REL - Greensboro
45-WXLV-ABC - Winston-Salem
47-WGSR-IND - Reidsville
48-WMYV-MY - Greensboro
64-WAXN-IND - Charlotte

DTV.gov says we should get 2 stations. WXII-12, and WSET-13. plus the PBS station in Roanoke (WBRA) which is on digital channel 3, but we don't have a VHF antenna.

we don't get any of the stations from near dallas (WBTV, WCNC, WJZY).

I like the new cable channel lineup. Just having all the ESPNs in a row is a big win for me. Plus I like all the early 1300s channels being linked together. It's just logical now as opposed to the totally random lineup we had before.

Wow, that's impressive. Do you have it on a rotor? Have you tried to get any West Virginia stations?
thanks. yep. i was hoping for beckley or maybe tri-cities va, but no signal at all.

the cabin is in the shadow of the mountain from wv though.

(yes, it's on a rotor)
Interesting. Are you receiving WCCB on 18-1 through 18-3 or 18-4 through 18-6?

amos1001,

If it isn't too much trouble, could we see a www.tvfool.com plot of your location? Looks like you have done really well with that antenna. Is it the new or old style 4228?
Amos 1001,

What channel numbers are you receiving for WSOC and WAXN? I am curious if you are receiving the Mains or one of the translators...
i'm not at the cabin now, so these answers are from memory. i'm pretty sure they're correct though.

theo, i'm pretty sure i'm receiving the main channels.

trip, 18.3 -- 18.3

jspenc, i'll do that plot and post it after lunch.

Yeah, if you're seeing 18-1 through 18-3, you're seeing WCCB from its primary location, which is where the primary WSOC/WAXN come from.

If you were seeing 18-4 through 18-6, you'd be seeing Hickory.

Also, if you're seeing 64-7 and 9-7 and 9-8, you're seeing the China Grove translator.

it's the older CM-4228, not the 4228HD

this is the plot for the Woolwine, VA location

here's the plot

here's another report for a different location.

the location is rural hall, nc 27045, which is just north of winston-salem. i'm using a channel master 4221 in the attic with no rotor. i do have an amp.

i've been using a samsung sir-t151 receiver, but just got the dish dtvpal dvr. with the dtvpal i get stations that were only receivable before by turning the antenna. again, i have not installed a rotor at this location yet.

02-WFMY-CBS-Greensboro
03-WBTV-CBS-Charlotte
08-WGHP-FOX-High Point
09-WSOC-ABC-Charlotte (9.1, 9.2, 9.7, 9.8) so i'm getting charlotte and china grove
12-WXII-NBC-Winston-Salem
18-WCCB-FOX-Charlotte
20-WCWG-CW-Lexington
26-WUNL-PBS-Winston-Salem
36-WCNC-NBC-Charlotte
43-WLXI-REL-Greensboro
45-WXLV-ABC-Winston-Salem
46-WJZY-CW-Belmont
48-WMYV-MY-Greensboro
58-WUNG-PBS-Concord
64-WAXN-IND-Kannapolis (64.1 and 64.7) so i'm getting charlotte xmitter and china grove translator

all of the stations are the main locations, except i get both main transmitter and china grove translator for WSOC and WAXN.

last night i was getting WHKY 14 Hickory, but it faded out and isn't coming in today.

We have an ancient motorized antenna fastened to our chimney that's been there since the 60s (at least) and unused since the mid-70s when we got cable (IIRC). In thinking whether or not there was anything I could do to recycle or reuse it locally, I thought a quick question on this local forum might give me the best advice. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance for any help.

If the antenna is really from the 60's, with antenna prices what they are, I would just trash it. Same with the rotor. I bought a very expensive ham rotor back in the late 70's (Cornell-Doubler). In the early 90's, after it had been in the air at the beach for about 10 years, I decided to rebuilt it. BAD mistake. Cornell-Doubler had gotten out of the rotor business and it still sits in a box waiting to be "rebuilt." Which of course will never happen.

When I installed my OTA, I bought the $59 CM rotor with remote control. Haven't regretted it yet.

My advice, trash it all and start over. You will come out better in the long run.

I was born in '64 and I remember it from waaayyy back, so I think that's correct on the era. I think we got cable around '75 - from Summit Cable in Winston :-)

As to trashing it, that was my assumption, but I thought maybe someone would say 'it's got xx feet of copper wire, so take it to a metal recycling place' or 'those old antennas are perfect for hobbyists who...' - since I am unfamiliar with the technology involved, I wanted to ask before it headed to the landfill.
If the antenna is from the 60's, I doubt seriously it is optimized for UHF. Some might like to see a pic of it though, just to see how it has held up and what it looks like. I bet it is probably all rusty at the boom.
The oxidation of 50 years pretty much makes it trash. I wouldn't waste my time.

jspENC How does WCTI look?
Oh, while I think of it, we got notice that FOX will make the Splicer 2.0 active for us sometime first week of July. Not really sure what that is going to buy us really, but it is suppose to allow us to do crawls and such over network programming. We shall see what it looks like since reports I heard from NAB where FOX had a demo setup, didn't sound very good.

Bob???

No one... yet. But we all are in 16:9 widescreen. We started it last September, WFMY changed in January and WXII went the first night of the Olympics.

From watching FOX Carolina in the Asheville-GSP Market, they've been running their HD Weather Alert Crawls during FOX Primetime and have been looking great and no issues that I could see so far. This is the station that had been lacking any HD other than FOX Primetime and Sports Programming with a (my opinion only) poor quality digital signal even on D*. If it's the same thing that will be coming your way, it is very promising from this viewer's standpoint. Good luck with Splicer 2.0.

My guess is they are not on 2.0 yet. The list I saw only listed stations that are either O & O's or former O & O's at this time. There are ways to get HD on the air that bypasses the splicer.

Which ever way it is, they have it on there and it's working well. However they get it that way, kudos to them!

if you haven't already dismantled and trashed it, i'd recommend hooking it up and trying it. the rotor is probably trash, but you never know. what kind of antenna is it? at my mom's in wadesboro she had a channel master color crossfire (vhf yagi) with a cm-4221 uhf. it had seperate 300 ohm downleads, and they were broken anyway. my brother took down the vhf part, leaving the cm-4221, and ran new rg6 to the antenna. she gets all the charlotte stations, plus 2 and 20 from greensboro, and 15 from florence -- this is without a rotor, it was wayyy too rusty to expect to work.

the 4221 reflector is totally rusty too, but it works perfectly.

like a box of chocolates --- etc.

Anyone in Concord-Kannapolis area receive Greensboro-Winston stations OTA? Back in analog days, picked up 2,8,12, and 45 very well...Just curious.
You may want to go to the Charlotte thread and ask that question. Very few if any from that area frequent this thread with any regularity.
