Why would a projector need an ethernet port

Some use them for FW updates.

Most likely no for your scenario. But there are several reasons people like to network their projector if it supports it, be it for schools or business.

Also managing dozens of projectors, it's good if you can pull remotely the bulb hours etc.

Yeah also institutions use it to control the projectors through a main IT router. This way the techs can remotely turn projectors on and off or check the condition, temperatures, bulb hours (as mentioned), etc. Instead of going to each individual unit.

Sorry for resurrecting this thread but I am also installing my 1st home projector (3D) in a few months but am pre-wiring it now since I am doing a room remodel. I am wondering if I need to run a dedicated ethernet wire to the PJ.

I can see the need to 'maybe' wire it for firmware but how often do they require FW updates? Other than ethernet, how else would one update the firmware on a projector if not by ethernet? Do most PJ's come with USB ports too (for a thumbdrive update)?

Also, do most PJs have widgets like TVs now for streaming? If so, perhaps it would make sense.

Yeah, I'm going to leave it off too. I was looking at some of the new Epson PJ's and they have WIFI built-in but they advertise this feature for streaming. I run everything through my receiver/pre-pro so that is not something I would be needing. Some of the Epsons also have USB ports; For firmware, I suppose.

You can probably view photos directly off a usb stick

Yeah, that might be useful too although in my case I would have to attach a dongle so I could actually get to it once I have it up on the ceiling and boxed in. Would probably opt for viewing photos from my NAS or attached Oppo BluRay player instead.
