Question: Audio Reverse Channel (ARC)

Hi,

I need to clarify my understanding of ARC before I buy a new system. For example, let's say my Blu-Ray player is feeding my TV to HDMI input #3. If my TV supports ARC on HDMI input #1, and if I connect #1 to my AV receiver (also with ARC), will the audio from the Blu-Ray be playable through my AV receiver?

I just want to see if the TV will put out an audio signal on HDMI #1 even if the audio source is from somewhere else on the TV.

Would the TV generally be able to convert analog audio inputs to HDMI #1?

I know my questions pertain to specific features of a particular TV, but I'm looking to see if the use cases I present are specifically not supported generally.

audio "return" channel...

1) maybe. depends on the implementation. very unlikely it would pass anything but 2 channel or dd...

2) highly highly unlikely. the tv would have to digitize the audio signal and sync it. i doubt any tv exists that will do this.

why are you connecting your bdp to the tv? why aren't you passing it through your avr? arc is primarily for ota users and built-in tv apps...

For OTA, I just use optical out to the AVR for AC-3 audio. All else is connected to the AVR with just the video passing to the tv.

ARC is on the HDMI Out of the TV not the HDMI Inputs - an ARC enabled TV can send audio over an HDMI cable to the ARC enabled HDMI Input on an AVR (or ARC compatible HDMI Switch).

ARC is primarily designed to send your TV's internal tuner audio to you AVR - what any ARC enabled TV does with External sources connected to the TV via HDMI will vary from manufacturer and even model to model.

Do they even make TVs with an HDMI output? The whole idea of ARC is to eliminate running an audio output cable.

Input and output are relative so it can be confusing. What you are asking is if there are TVs that can act as HDMI hubs.

I know of no TVs that have an HDMI output. Most of the TVs seems to use their HDMI 1 input to output the ARC signal back to the receiver.
