Should I enable 5.1 sound for a virtual surround sound system?

This may be dumb question but I haven't been able to find anything answers through Google.

I recently purchased a ZVOX ZBASE 555 virtual surround sound and I'm unsure what sound sources I should I enable on my Playstation 3.

Should I just be using stereo or should I be using DTS or Dolby Digital 5.1? How do I tell what my speakers support (I don't seem any sound sources listed under the ZBASE specifications).

I played around with the settings, and while the 5.1 creates a better environmental effect, the rear sources are very soft. The stereo sound, while more consistent seems flat in comparison.

while the Zvox is basically a stereo system, since it takes optical input set your playstation to DD5.1 and let the Zvox sort it out. Can you increase the gain on the rear speakers in the sound card setup ?

also, on true DD5.1 soundtracks, the surrounds are not always active. Depends on the movie effects that are mastered for the surround channels.

Try dd5.1 and stereo output from the PS3. Use which ever one you like better.
