HDMI audio config for mythbuntu 11.10?

Well after trouble with two Grubs...in installing Mythbuntu 11.10

I have it running ..at least the desktop anyway
Now I am trying to get audio working again via the
Nvidia HDMI sound.
So unlike Mint this has no sound area for configuration(unless I have missed it??)
How can I configure it to use alsa..and find the right Nvidia outlet?

Here are two terminal outputs...
first is... aplay -L

Do you see the option to scan for audio devices under mythfrontend setup? Can you select HDMI audio there? It may show many different options so it may take some trial and error....

Do you have sound outside of MythTV? What Desktop environment are you using?

In Gnome, you can access sound settings from the menu:

System-->Preferences-->Sound

It can also be accessed by clicking the "Speaker" icon in the task bar, and selecting "Sound Preferences".

Or by typing this into the terminal:

gnome-volume-control

But, I think Mythbuntu uses a different Desktop environment, so I doubt if any of these will work.

Ok, you have four HDMI outputs. Which one are you using?

To test the outputs, use the speaker-test command. Here are the devices to test:

card1,device3
card1,device7
card1,device8
card1,device9

Test them with this command. White noise will be generated during the test, and use the -c option to tell it how many channels:

And FYI, Myth 0.25 finds all the alsa outputs better than it did for me w/ 0.24 (the default w/ the current Mythbuntu).

I posted about it a bit lower in setting up Sandy Bridge.

I installed SMplayer...as from what I have read its the best...
most flexible player(ie many options..including codecs)
...so after playing with the graphic of alsamixer(ie F6)
under terminal
and selecting Nvidia HD audio...

and then selecting device 7...ie as in this one below

card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 7: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]

from within both VLC and then SMplayer...I was able to get 5.1
multi-channel PCM(via my GT220)..to my Onkyo AV receiver.

But there is no sound when using desktop..just in these players

Yep that was what I did in previous installation under Mint 12...didnt seem to work in the ubuntu desktop part of Mythbuntu.
That was the good part of Mint ..
under sound it had a gui for speaker test..much more user friendly!!
and it worked..once I had the sound going via NVIDIA device.

I must say I was busy in MthTV backend and front end last night
trying to get TV working ..sort of working now..but at moment
not near looking like Mediaportal(under win 7)
...and I didnt see any audio set-up there
I will take another look in my next three hour session
with this software

Yep from what I can see MythTV
is where you change all these things...
there appears to be no sound area under System
in the ubuntu desktop..of Mythbuntu

Still... using alsamixer in terminal(I think this is what did it)
and changing sound settings in SMplayer...
I was able to watch Terminator Salvation..
in glorious 5.1 surround sound last night..
..and although the picture did freeze a few times during playback
..the picture looked as good as my Window 7 set-up.

Run it, and on the last tab click on the Internal Audio Profile dropdown list. You should find the audio options that you are looking for.

From what I have read with the latest version
of ALSA...which Mythbuntu 11.10 has...and that is version 1.0.24
it appears to handle outputting audio via HDMI better.

It is one reason why I have not installed Linux before...because
ease of set-up of HDMI audio seemed either problematic..or not well explained. Unfortunately in many Linux forums you see the horror stories of set-up
and not the successful ones..ie how to actually get something working.

Also while commandline is powerful..it takes a while to get enough confidence and knowledge to have any idea what one is doing...and not simply stuff up..any initial installation.

Being a Linux newbie..there are enough unknown things without
having to blindly search about for audio set-up answers.

I am slowly coming to understand some of the Linux stuff..
like this modular business..in this case for audio under
ALSA. Also what the output in terminal actually mean!

Pulse from what I have seen is more about control...
I dont need control..I need players like VLC and SM player..
and MythTV to output sound via the HDMI to my AV receiver
Pulse maybe already installed..I havent checked

anyway I still havent worked out how to look at .conf files yet!

So as I said I have sound via VLC and SMplayer...and its Multi channel PCM
...which is what my NVIDIA GT220 supports.

I am still recovering from the useless way the Mythbuntu install disc managed to install a Grub somehow on my storage disc drive...
even though I chose my OS drive(all to do with sda and sdb)

So now I have it back (my OS) by actually swapping Sata connectors...
to change the sda and sdb...and get past this two grubs
and actually get into setting up MythTV..
rather than be stuck on stupid OS issues!!
If I sound upset..yes
cause I aint interested in the intricacies of Linux..
I am trying to get a stable working PVR on my HTPC

At least now I have installed Linux and MythTV..(apart from Live Disc tinkering my only Linux experience)
so its a matter of over the next few weeks
seeing if I can get to grips with MythTV set-up and
get it working right...especially with my Hauppauge RC6 remote-control

The main reason I look and write at this forum
is because I hope to learn(and hopefully contribute)
how to set-up my Home Theatre PC with Linux and MythTV...
and actually use it for TV/Movies/Music!
After all this is the... Linux area... of... Home Theatre Computers

The guides here(Thanks Rgb) and answers have certainly helped in
giving me confidence to actually leave the safe confines of Windows 7
..and delve into Linux/buntu and its MythTV addon.

Pulse audio is a sound server, and is the default sound handler in most major Linux distributions. If you want Desktop sound, you are going to have to configure it. You are making thing much more difficult by trying to work around it.

As for the sound quality of Pulse, I never heard anything about it being worse than Alsa. Digital is all bits, so it must be the same. Alsa is still there running the sound. You will see the Alsa modules are loaded.

I believe it does support pulse but it's highly recommended to not use it. I found that MythTV worked on my system with Pulse removed and only using ALSA.

Most configuration files in /etc can just be edited with a text editor. There are a couple editors installed on your machine. I use vim (or vi) but it is probably not the best choice at this point if you have never used it. Another is nano which will be closer to what you are most likely used to using.

Most files in /etc a "normal" user can only read - meaning you cannot edit and save your changes. On Ubuntu you can get root (superuser or admin) permission by using the sudo command. It will ask you for YOUR password, and allow you permission if you type it correctly. So

sudo nano /etc/asound.conf

would let you edit and save any changes to that file.

I can't promise anything magical, but I went thru the HDMI audio process a while ago (on earlier versions of Alsa).. may (or may not) be anything you can learn from: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1225332

FWIW, getting the speakertest to work, for me was always step 1... then convincing every app to send audio to the correct output.

That may have been true (for some) a while ago. But I have not had any recent trouble with Pulse audio.

For MythTV, I set up the audio option using this selection:

Given my level of Linux knowledge ..no way I will be altering
anything without asking questions..
I merely wanted to find a way of looking at this file..
to see what is in there..probably all standard
but wanted to make sure..and try to widen my knowledge.

Is this Ubuntu Gnome Sound Preference Gui..standard with Ubuntu
that is installed under MythTV..??

or did you install it as add-on thru the Synaptic repositories manager?

I am not going to mess too much with the sound further
(as it is working with both VLC and SMplayer)
until I have a few long sessions trying to get Myth TV
working..at least as far as Live TV..
and that will be this weekend..

In particular I need to get my Hauppaoge RC6 remote working in
Myth TV..otherwise it is a wasted effort.
I need some ease of couch control..other than via keyboard.

So next priority is to delve in to LIRC..
I assume this is what is needed to get an RC6(like my Hauppauge) remote working
with MythTV??

Mythbuntu has ALSA version 1.0.24..which seems to be version that makes it easier to set-up
for HDMI audio...I went into alsamixer and used F6 to set the device to 1
which is the Nvidia device..
as against Intel HD..which was device 0..
so lot of that post I recognise..thanks

That was one nice part of Mint 12 ..was the sound configuration area Gui
..which included a speaker test Gui...a little more user friendly
for us used to soft-padded Windows 7 surroundings..

I really applaud you for going at this and diving in... For basic use linux is simple to install and use but for more advanced things like what you're doing it can be difficult. Good job keeping at it.

Sometimes LIRC can be a total pain. I'm not aware of any good frontend to get it working. Time to dive in to text files and edit some .conf documents! Let us know when you are going at it and we'll get you through it.

So my remote is a Hauppuage RC6 type...model no TSHA-IR01
and looks like this one shown in

I think its a 45 button remote..and comes with a usb receiver
(and works nicely without any configuration in Windows media center!)

different remotes(including many Hauppauge varieties)
So the idea is to work out which does work...

They are (usually) just text files... find some editor you like and use that to view/edit. You'll need to get comfortable doing that.. I'd say its a pre-requisite for using linux.

Typical suffixes will be .conf, .rc.. and since I never use GUI file manager... do files starting with . show up in the GUI? (many config type files will start with . b/c some interfaces "hide" them from the user).

You would most likely be more comfortable using the gedit app to edit text files. If not already installed, use this command to install it:

sudo apt-get install gedit
Enter your password when it asked for it. You will need to run it with root privileges, so use the gksudo command:

gksudo gedit
Again enter your password in the popup window.

Edit: You may need to use gksu instead of gksudo.

As far as sound, to make the HDMI the default for desktop sound (and Flash inside a web browser, etc.) just create a file called ".asoundrc" in your home folder (no special permissions needed), and put this into the file:

defaults.pcm.card 1
defaults.pcm.device 7
You can use gedit as the text editor.

That is great info Mr. Ross. I was editing /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf instead. The local .asoundrc is a better way to do it.
