Wow. I have been waiting for some sort of deal other than the $125 to send the broken PS3 back. Unfortunately, I can't find the deal on the site (it is the 15th now). Was this a one day deal, or am I looking in the wrong place?

Thanks for letting me know about this, though.

Do you have a link? My PS3 just blew up 3 days ago.

Some members may find it easier to call the PlayStation Support line at 1-800-345-7669 instead of going through the online process. If you find your system is invalid for the trade-in offer and you get to the page where you input your credit card info, the next time you input your serial it will say: "The number you have entered is not a valid serial number."

Quote from webpage:

"For a limited time we are offering a trade-in for your current model to the latest PlayStation®3 120GB model.

The factory re-certified PlayStation®3 120GB system includes:
120GB HDD for storing games, music, videos and photos. (Technical Specifications)
High-Definition Blu-ray player for the best movie experience.
Internet ready with built-in Wi-Fi.
Two USB ports
HDMI output for 1080p resolution
Plays DVDs and CDs
Cell Broadband Engine advanced microprocessor
And comes with a 90 day Limited Service Warranty

For backwards compatibility and model comparison, please see chart below.

The 120GB PS3 system is not backwards compatible with PlayStation®2 titles, but does maintain backwards compatibility for some original PlayStation® titles."

**After you choose your PS3 model and input your serial you will be directed to a page where you "select the issue you are experiencing..." and "provide in detail what you are experiencing," followed by entering a CAPTCHA. The next page after that displays your service cost and requires you to enter your "consumer information." The PS3 models available for the trade-in offer have a service cost of $129. If your service cost is $99 your model is not eligible. The trade-in offer is not presented until AFTER you complete and submit the $129 service cost page.**

**UPDATE 12/13/2011** Tax is YMMV. There is no cost for shipping. Confirmed via second PlayStation Support email: "You will be receiving a box from us with prepaid shipping to our service facility. Your box will arrive in about three (3) to five (5) business days."

Quote from second PlayStation Support email:

"Frequently Asked Questions on Service :

How long does service take?
Turn-around time for the service is about seven (7) to ten (10) business days from the time we receive the system.

What about my warranty?
Once service is complete, your serviced system will be sent to you with a new 90 day limited service warranty. This new warranty will not affect your original manufacturer's warranty. You will continue to be covered under the remaining portion of your original 1 year warranty. Your service warranty ends 90 calendar days after you receive your system.

Will I receive any notifications about my service?
You will receive emails at the email address you provide to PlayStation® Consumer Services. We will send an email when the system is received and another when the system is shipped back to you. Please remember to check your bulk and junk folders for this email.

How do I check the status of my system?
You can check the status of your system online using your Service Request number (SR#) or your you can call our automated phone system at 800-345-SONY(7669) and press option 4 and use your phone number or SR#.

It's such a great news for PS3 lovers, is the offer for limited period only? If not then it will be booming all the time.

The deal is still running!

I just looked into myself and am A OK'd for my old ps3 that I haven't been able to use due to it dying like 2.5 years ago or so.

Just to give everyone an update.

I got my box for shipping my old PS3 on Monday.

I boxed it up and sent it back out on Tuesday the following day.

Sony got my PS3 on Friday (yesterday), and actually shipped out my replacement PS3 the same day!

I got my tracking number and it's estimated to be here on 1/11/12!

This was 1 helluva damn GOOD DEAL.

Damn. I was looking all over for this kinda deal. Couldn't find one.
Ended up buying one for 200 on Ebay. Hopefully I can get atleast $150 for 40gig. This would have been less hassle though. Good to know Sony is doing something to rebuild its rep.

I just checked it myself to verify, and it's there. Not sure if the deal is still good or not though, only you can find that out for sure by entering your info.

Good luck!

Hey gang - thought I would chime in since this thread helped me look for answers to this deal. The offer popped up on other deal sites (such as dealnews.com) so I gave it a try.

I placed a Service Request on my system, entered the model and serial number, entered my contact info and credit card number and after submitting it, the $99/refurb new system deal did not show up.

I was confused why it didn't happen so I called the customer service number mgkdragn posted earlier in the thread. The service rep was very courteous and explained to me that the deal probably didn't apply to me because I had an older - backwards compatible system (80GB MGS4 2008 system).

Since the new crop of PS3's are not backwards compatible, a new refurbished system could replace an out of warranty system without backwards compatibility. So the $99/refurb replacement deal didn't apply to me. I'm not sure if this is the exact reason, and I don't know if others have been successful with a backwards-compatible model, but a new, cheap refurb was really all I wanted.

I asked the rep if I could cancel my service request, and he said that Sony only places a hold of $129 until they get my system. They don't charge my card until then. So I can call my bank and tell them to release the hold, and I can ignore the box that Sony ships to me and the service request will go away in 30 days.

I think I'll just look for a cheap deal on a new 160GB console - they are quieter, smaller, and I'll get a new controller and bigger HDD out of it. An extra $120 for a new system is worth it to me.

good one

wished I jumped on this deal earlier. I have a bad PS3 collecting dust at my house. I believe it overheated and it's not longer under warranty. I'll do some more research to see if it's repairable and what the cost would be.
Just letting you guys know, I called Sony today and qualified for the same $99 deal. So they are still doing it for qualified model numbers.
lol my friend just bought a new slim 2 weeks ago. His original PS3 broke... I guess he can trade it in and resell the refurb now..

Ok... kind of stupid... but I have working 60gb PS3 fat. Can I do the $99 upgrade? I got the PS3 primarily as a bluray player approximately 4 years ago. It has quite a few hours on it in rooms tbat are quite warm. I have it free standing and have used an external fan for the last few years but I wonder how long it will last. I don't own any PS or PS2 games nor do I have any SACDs... but I would like to bitstream Bluray and HD-DVD disks.

Edit: Obviously the fat and slim PS3s don't play HD-DVD disks. I referred to the fact that I prefer to bitstream all codecs if possible.

99.9% positive that it has to be broken to use the trade in deal.
does anyone have the wiki link or a place to find a list of the models that can be traded
post #23 of 36
My refurb replacement Fat from 2008 just YLOD'd. I'll be getting it repaired from PCDirect.com for $100. If I buy a Slim, I'd buy a brand new one with a FULL warranty and then I'd buy an extended warranty from whatever store I buy it from. In the meantime, I have commandeered the living room Slim.

$99 is a great deal for sure. I just don't like the crappy 90 day warranty. Why don't they give it a full year like most factory sold refurbs? This shows a lack of confidence in the product. Then there is the data on your old unit that will be gone.

Well... now that might be the case. No blinking lights but my PS3 fat won't read any bluray disks or any of my three ps3 games. I'm getting an error code. I didn't write it down... but I will try tomorrow.

Sounds like so long as your PS3 is 1 of those that qualify, you should be good to go. Just go to the web site and go through all the necessary steps needed to find out for sure. Only takes a few minutes. Good luck.

The PS3 has a backup option which I've never used. Would this allow for saving off the contents of a Fat PS3 to a plugged in HDD and restoring onto a refurb slim?

My Fat's BD drive doesn't work, so would consider $99 swap if I could save stuff off and load back to slim.

Waiting on my box to arrive.. Mine would eject disc, load disc, and would go to a black screen when trying to play Netflix or Amazons VOD service...
