HSU STF-2 died

My HSU STF-2 just died. After reading a few posts here I see a few HSU's experienced the blown fuse/power supply/amp issue. I'm wondering what others have done in this situation.

From a cost perspective it doesn't make sense to repair it. Does anyone have a recommendation for a replacement?

Thanks for responding. I just purchased a new TV and receiver recently and did not plan on buying a new sub as well. I'd rather stay within the $300 range.

Perhaps you could call HSU and they could give you a deal on a new STF-2?

Yeah I thought about that but I have reservations with HSU now. All I did was power it off because I was relocating my receiver. When I turned it on, nothing!

They'll most likely beable to sell you a replacement amp for cheaper than buying a similar performing subwoofer. I would call them they will have the best solutions

I also agree that you should give them a call. Their customer service is excellent.

I had a sub of theirs that was out of warranty and it went bad. After talking with Pete Hsu on the phone he suggested that I could just buy the replacement part necessary to fix the problem. Much cheaper than buying a new sub. He didn't try to talk me into buying a new sub--in fact, he thought it was wiser to salvage what I had.

My HSU went out recently as well. Sent the amp in for repair 3 weeks ago and they haven't even looked at it yet. I always heard the customer service is great, But I guess not.

Hsus have generally been very reliable. My Hsu STF-2 is six years old. I have had three subwoofers whose amps failed in the 1-4 year mark and one fail at the 9 year mark. The two 1-year fails were for a standalone amp for a passive 15" subwoofer in the late 1980s.

I believe that a replacement amp for the STF-2 is around $220 (but it may have gone up). It is relatively straightforward to unscrew an old plate amp and put in the new one.

As the many comments in this forum indicate, it is difficult to get anything that compares with the STF-2 under $400.

Mine died in Oct. (I had the STF-2 for 5 years-bought it used when it was 2 yrs old) I had the amp repaired by HSU. It was $120 plus $20 ship (plus my cost of $8 to ship the amp to them.

I had my original VFT-2 (Mk1) last for 10 years before the amp had to be repaired. I still feel it's one of the best values I've had in a piece of audio gear, and the repair was only a little over $100.

Maybe, but I think their prices have gone up. My VTF3 MK4 replacement amp cost $250 (last week) whereas they used to be around $220. (They gave me a free foam plug, though )

Have you called them? Mine went out on my VTF3 MK2, and I sent my amp on 12/9 and got it back today.

I will say dealing with Pete and (shoot, cant remember the tech's name I talked to) was pleasurable. So helpful, understanding, and plain old nice. As another poster mentioned, it was $140 shipped for my amp repair.

I had my sub unplugged for a couple of days.I reconnect the system, but no bass?? I checked the fuse (blown) and replaced it __no bass. I tried 3 different ones with no luck. I replced the power cord, speaker wire with no luck. I guess the amp is defective. The sub is over 7 years old, but works very well in my house set-up. I call HSU and they have two options for me.

1. Pay $ 172. for a mew amp section with 1 year warranty.
2. Discount price for a new STF-2 $ 340 shipped.

Or I can save some cash and get a polk audio PSW10 $ 99 bucks delivered. I not familiar with the polk and cant make a comparison. Any advise. Thanks.

I had the PSW10 before the STF-2. There is no comparison. I wouldn't wish the PSW10 on my worst enemy.

7 years old.. I think it depends on how often you use the sub and if it is meeting your expectations. I am inclined to say get a new one and then try and pickup a cheap amp somewhere and incorporate both subs if you can.

The Polk sub is junk. I got one for free once and it was just terrible. You would be taking a big step backwards IMHO.

Ok forget the polk LOL Then I have to make a decision on buying a new one with a full warranty or just get the amp section with a one year warranty.... Thank you guys for the advise. I will update later.
