More Flat Pack Kits Coming.

Thread Starter
Guys I have some possible good news on future flat packs.

As many of you know, I've been getting them cut for a few different designs and boxing them up in my spare time. Also working to get different box sizes cut without driver cut-outs and of course, subwoofer kits.

Obviously it takes a couple days for me to get the packages boxed and shipped. But I've done pretty good so far. My shipping rates are okay with FedEx, but probably no where near as good as Parts Express.

Because of that, I had an idea to contact PE to see if they wanted to handle some of the flat packs if I could get the boxes made up and delivered. I only live about 30 minutes away, so it seemed like a good idea. And I don't mind delivering them stacked on pallets because I go to PE every couple weeks anyway.

I talked to them today and they like the idea.

here's a few ideas I had.

8.5" x 14" x 12" (.5 cu ft) using 3/4" mdf is a must because there's a design coming for that size anyway.

8.5" x 20" x 12" (.75 cu ft) using 3/4" mdf.

1.25, 2, 3, 4, 5 cu ft, subwoofer with bracing will be priced.

What else would be good? I'm open for any size/shape ideas. Maybe a small satellite style flat pack? A stubby .75 cu ft box? Some smaller floor standers? Different subwoofer boxes? Any idea is good.

KITS Also!

Curt's Stentorians and his MTM's will likely be made up with his permission. I have to ask Paul C about more Overnight Sensations and if he's okay with PE carrying them. But I can continue with those myself if needed. Nano Neo's as well, but again, I will contact the designers to see what they think.

2 designs are coming out using the 6" Aurasound buy-out woofer in a .5 cu ft enclosure.

Of course, I'll still be helping with different kits that you guys want, so no worry about that. PE won't be carrying all of them anyway.

What about an Econowave kit.?
Funny thing is I was looking for your flat pack thread to ask you about Econowaves.
Awesome! Good luck on your endeavors. Here's what I think the DIY community seems to be building a lot of lately.

OS / OS MTM
Nano Neo / Nano Neo NTN
Speedsters
Zaph Audio designs: although PE probably wouldn't want to support this, since his drivers are only sold by Madisound right now.
Ported enclosure for 15" DVC subwoofer: probably too big to ship for a reasonable price.

The original Econowave was going to be the very first flat pack I helped with. It was discussed quite a bit and nearly ready to go. But then Zilch passed away suddenly and it was put on hold. That's when I decided to do the Anarchy tapped horn just to get things moving.

I will be helping with a number of different "econowave" variants in the near future using the SEOS™ waveguide. Maybe the generic flat packs can go through PE, or ones that use PE parts could be sold as complete kits if they really wanted to. I'm not really sure.

But I can still offer the other kits on my site. Some of those will be using different drivers that PE doesn't carry. They'll be documented later and available no matter what. I'm not sure PE will be interested in those.
How about an Econowave kit using:
PA310 woofer
SEOS12 concrete horn
Selenium D220ti driver (or optionally, B&C DE250)
Tall ported cabinet to get waveguide to ear level
post #7 of 340
I'd like to suggest widening the .75 from 8.5" to 10". And maybe a couple inches taller. Otherwise it's to close to the .5cuft. And would allow a larger woofer design. I could sure use a 10x26 for my current build.

Of course, changing the .75 like you said will simply make it a 1 cu ft enclosure. I'm sure there will be one of those as well. What exact dimensions were you thinking? A "stubby" 1 cu ft enclosure? Maybe a little bigger so it could be used with some 8" subwoofers as well.

Wow, I'm a real idiot today. I was going to post this thread over on the PE forum first, then later in the week here!

I had both sites opened in the browser, and only posted here. The really sad thing is that I didn't even realize it after replying to the other posts above! It wasn't until Tuxedocivic posted that I realized something was strange!

Okay, I must be overworked.....or losing it!
Well if you're proposing a 1cuft, then that would do it. Ya, basically something that can squeeze an 8" on to. For me I'd love a 35L 10" x 28". Hmm, wait a sec. What's the seos8 width again? That plus 2"

I think I'll have built my cabs before these are available though. And I'm not sure it would be a popular size.

Actually, I think it will be a popular size for the SEOS surround speaker. Those will definitely be worked on in the near future, just not 100% sure on the size.

Those kits won't be sold through PE because I'm going to try and get some good pricing on certain drivers from different manufacturers that PE doesn't offer right now.

"What else would be good? I'm open for any size/shape ideas."

what about small, purpose built thx mains?

an appleply pseudo-trapezoid enclosure with seos(tm) 12 horn, de250, td12m.

1.0 cubic foot tuned to 50hz with a 1" h x 12" w x 10" d slot port, -3db right on 80hz.

or, with kappalite 3012ho, 1.1 cubic foot tuned to 55hz with a 1" h x 12" w x 7" d slot port

like this, but without the frankenstein bolts and the tannoy logo. :-)

just what the doc ordered...i'll be in for 2
post #14 of 340
I've been hanging on waiting for the SEOS designs or econowave type deal. As soon as you have something set in stone I will be ready to order! It's been hard to wait, but for what you're doing for the community it seems worth while.

I think I could persuade some others to go for these types too!

Eric,
Could you join in to the "LMS ultra's vs. new pi 18's thoughts on displacement" thread? There may be a group buy brewing for 18" drivers and if you could provide optimal boxes for these it would be great!

What's optimal for one person might not be optimal for another. For example, what if someone wanted their box tall and skinny and the other wanted it cubic? Subwoofers are forgiving and can be made any way.
Well we might have to come to a consensus then. Otherwise, build your own.

Any additional info on these? Style (floor standers, PA column option, both), wood type, possible arrival times? I am planning to build the Stentorians (I have the drivers and crossover parts already) but if you are offering pre-cut kits I might hold off.

very interested in the speedster

If PE likes the price of the 18" subwoofer box we talked about here a few months ago, it will be done. I think it was a sealed 4 cu ft box made from 3/4" real Baltic birch and a double thick baffle.

PE will obviously add money to this stuff to cover overhead and the free shipping they offer. But I'll probably have to keep some stock at my place. If PE doesn't want to stock some items, or certain kits that don't use their products, I can do those myself as well. No doubt that some flat packs just don't make sense for PE to carry.

I'm not sure how long before PE orders on any of the kits. I'm getting prices for different ones right now.

What makes this so much better is that more kits will be available for everyone.

That is great news. Even at $300 each, I'd buy them assuming they are the ones Notnyt designed.

Great news Eric. Wonder how the Stent's would compete with say Paradigm Sigs in terms of SQ and SPL. With PE potentially having them in stock, I can actually send them to my parents when they are in Florida for winters if I do decide to go DIY on speakers as well!

In terms of sound quality, probably not as good as the Paradigms. In terms of SPL, probably a lot better. Curt makes no claim that these are SQ speakers. They are about getting loud, for a ridiculously low price. They use cheap components to get that bang for the buck. And they're quite a bit bigger
post #24 of 340
Has anyone purchased the flat pack kit for the Stentorians? I do not see them listed on the website. Considering how old this thread is I would bet they are now available so I must just be missing them.

That's awesome, LTD02. That is precisely what I have been modeling, same slot port too. I must be learning something on here! cool.gif

I just can't get the enclosure right (operator error I presume). What about baffle size? To accommodate the TD12M (12.5") and SEOS-12 (13.5" x 6.5"), it must be around 15" to accommodate a round over and at a minimum 20-21" in height (woofer and wg touching is 19"). After bracing, port, and driver volume I keep getting ~1.2 ft^3. That's as small as I can get it. Also, the enclosure depth has to be around 11" for the port length as well. Thoughts?
box within a box. a piece of wood can be put in between the woofer and the horn in order to create a smaller woofer box while maintaining the larger front baffle area.

Thanks LTD02. I knew that...redface.gif

I've got the baffles for the Stentorians, just haven't had time to list them. I think they were only $12? Not sure that counting a shipping box though. Heck, I haven't had time to eve list all the subwoofers or new kits yet. Things are finally slowing down though, so it's just a matter of time.

There's a big order of different smaller speaker boxes going to PE soon. I can't give all the details of that just yet.
Thanks for the update Erich. I have a friend with limited time and tools and is considering this build for some music speakers in his living room. Do you plan to offer a complete kit that also includes the res of the cabinet pieces? I'll talk to him on Monday about this option and his time frame.

My eD speaker was similar to this. I had the DE-250 and 3012HO driver but with the horn eD uses. It was a very nice speaker.

It is the speaker on the left, the one on the right is the M&K S-5000 speaker which is a great design itself. It plays much louder than one thinks.
