More Flat Pack Kits Coming. - Page 9

"To me, tall dual opposed boxes look odd."

just to get a feel for how it might look...

a baffle with a recessed driver panel and a speaker grill insert might be interesting.

35.5h x 22w are golden ratio dimensions btw, so it just doesn't look pretty...it is pretty. :-)

the design has the benefit of minimizing floor space in upright mode and it could also be placed on its side for under screen positioning.

Eric, any ETA on the MTM with the SEOS? Can you advise what the approx size will be?

There are no MTM's right now with the SEOS. There is an MTM coming with the EOS-8 and Eminence 8" Beta's.

I mentioned the idea to Jeff Bagby and he already had one designed. I just need to get the boxes designed.

Plus, the smaller 23" X 23" dimensions would make for stronger, less resonant baffles.

with a 6" port maximum length, no bends, it looks like a 19hz tuning would be possible.

so long as the port is within about 1/4 wavelength of the driver, they should sum pretty well.

dont' worry about resonant baffles. they will all be sufficiently braced.

I'd be interested in a pair of Conquest clones if the right driver was available.

I'm anxiously awaiting someone to come up with a mtm center channel!

there is one coming, its basically a fusion 8 with a 2nd woofer in MTM format

also someone is working on a MTM with 12s that can be used as LCR

both of these were mentioned in the other thread

Aahhhh...."golden ratio dimensions"....we have a design person here for sure! Reminds me of a movie I saw several years ago, actually, several decades ago, Donald in Mathmagic Land.
Great movie and still timely!biggrin.gif

I hope you don't mean on it's side.

Hi, quick question about Erich's 1 cu/ft subwoofer boxes. I'll be building two of them for 5 small Paradigm MilleniaOne satellites in an apartment. Crossing them over at 120hz. The vast majority will be movies/television. I'm debating between the Titanics and Dayton RSHF's. Any opinions on which one? Is one driver better suited for this 1cuft box? Thanks.

What is everyone doing for grills on these flat packs?

I have a little one and I'm not brave enough to leave SW bare for him to be tempted eek.gif
post #255 of 340
Speaker grill cloth + simple wood frame + magnets should be easy enough.

1x2s, glues/nailed into a rectangle
cover with grill cloth

for the 4 CUFT flatpacks 19.5 x 23.75 will get one to fit inside the roundover

Nice. I'm setting up my theater now and can for something with 8's in there. I'd want the 12's but I just don't have quite enough room

You could attach velcro with double-sided tape to both the baffle and the grill frames. That way, if you ever want to have no grills there won't be any holes left in the baffle.

Lowes sells nice pieces of Oak and Poplar in various sizes (3/4" X 1 1/2", etc.) and lengths. About a buck a foot for the Oak.

I would be interested in seeing some flat packs for the CSS kits. A dual PR SDX10 and the dual PR SDX12 with amp cut outs would be awesome.

12" XBL2 woofer, dual PRs and a 1k amp sounds like a great performer.

With the size of the surround on the SI drivers I don't think I could do grills unless I had at least a triple front baffle. So, that settled it for me, no grills.

If one wanted a grille, considering the 1.25" surround height is same on both 15" and 18", with 22.5mm Xmax (one-way linear) and 43mm Xmech (one-way) ...how much absolute clearance should one give from the base of the speaker to the grille cloth?

1.25" + 43mm aka 1.69" (worst case) = say 3".
Or is 1.25" + 22.5mm aka 0.88 = 2.2" enough for 99.9% , and if the surround touches the grille cloth just once in a while that is acceptable?

For the Flat Packs with 1/2" recess on front 3/4" MDF baffle, 1 x 2 stock (3/4" x 1 1/2") would not be enough, so 1 x 3 stock (3/4" x 2 1/2") as minimum, those would look like...big hunky grilles?
I was considering Grilles on my flat pack subs, but now that seems not best case for the SI drivers.

Mike the drivers looks so damn cool anyway, I don't think I would want to cover them up so it works out fine.
I hear you on the look of the drivers, I'm just being a cautious dad.
My IB sub is way up front on RH side of front wall, however my 2 "helper" subs for multi-sub approach will be in the room along LH side, aka, kids/etc, and just having a grille there may give peace of mind over real protection of damage.

In the end, I'll sink the 4 neo-magnets in the outside front baffle, but not make the grilles at first.

Any updates on the dual opposed for Dayton 18's? I'm trying to be patient, but an enclosure is my last puzzle piece...
Dayton or SI should sponsor you or something, or work on a collaboration of some sort, because you technically complement each others' business. The more people that can use flat packs, the more people that could use their drivers who would not be able to without them.

I'm worried about the end price on a box that big. The CNC company has the design and they will cut it as soon as I let them know, but it uses around 1.75 sheets of mdf. There isn't much that can fit in the left over sheet, so it's almost coming in as a 2 sheet build because they obviously have to bill for all the material whether it's utilized or not. I was hoping to cut more Stentorian baffles on the left over sheet, but those 6" woofers are now sold out.

Each box is going to weigh so much that it will need to be shipped in 2 different boxes. The packaging materials are over $12 with 2 boxes, then add in Paypal fees of $6 and the box is now up around $175 or so.

I've talked to PE about getting them some subwoofer flat packs for their woofers about a month ago. They liked the idea, so I'm waiting to see how it goes.

^This. I wouldn't have gone down the speaker/subwoofer road if not for the flat packs. I had a high-end headphone rig before I found the DIYSoundGroup website. I haven't looked back since - in fact, all I can think about is what I'll build in the future. tongue.gif

Well, I was going to pay more than that for two 4ft3 flat packs so that price looks good to me. Is it still at the 23 x 23 x 30 measurement? I think you said about 7.3ft3 net?
