discs that you once thought look good, but years later you notice serious flaws

I recently re-watched Spiderman 1 and 2 after the discs had been sitting on my shelves for years.

I can't believe I missed all the black crush in these. Every single dark spot in a person's hair, dark clothing, shadows, etc. is a huge black hole devoid of any detail. Not sure if they looked like this in theaters, but I'm guessing not as I seem to remember other older Sony discs having severe contrast issues.

The Buena Vista release of Face/Off is another one that I've had for a while (it was the BD I bought the day I got my first PS3, actually) but looked bad the last time I watched it, never seen the Universal release in motion but the screenshots showed reduced detail due to DNR so I had no desire to find out how bad it was.

For some crazy reason I thought the DVD release of Starship Troopers was awesome when it came out. I wanted to see how the BD compared because I wasn't that impressed with it so I pulled out the old DVD again. It's horrible quality. So, RELATIVELY, the BD is a lot better.

The first "Pirates of the Caribbean" on DVD. Never bought the Blu-ray, however I did keep reading and looking at screen shots about the Blu-ray release of that title within these threads.

At that time I read a review of the video quality of the Blu-ray from one of the video reviewers. They stated when they compared the Blu-ray to the DVD, they were shocked how horrible the DVD was compared to the Blu-ray.

Also, they were surprised at their original review about how great the DVD looked etc. Now all they see was bleeding color...lots of digital compression...etc.

I pulled out the DVD to see what it looked like on my system and they were right. It was awful! Compression artifacts all over the place and a bit fuzzy looking.

When I think about it, the movie came out in 2003...so it's very possible many saw this title on a 4:3 CRT...or even on a rear projection CRT 16x9 set. The flaws probably well hidden with the older video equipment show up better with today's home video gear.

This movie is 143 minutes long.

Recently I've seen a lot of BD's that are crap. Sometimes, I brake out some old DVD's and are somewhat surprised at how good they hold up....hell, even the audio on some of the 'big ones', like star wars or LOTR's are more involving with hefty audio....right now, it's totally a hit and miss crapshoot.......The one thing I DO know is that BD's have more rez......

The BVHE version of Face/Off is better than the Paramount BD. I had both releases and the former excels in AV but completely lacks on special features.

Oh yeah, the US release was Paramount and not Universal. Seems like it's been hardwired into my brain that Universal is the king of crap quality for catalog releases, so I keep forgetting that Paramount has quite a few stinkers as well.

Yeah, I saw the screenshots, and I'd definitely take the BV release. Still, I could tell it was bad even when watching from fairly far away on my girlfriend's piddly 40" Sony. I'm almost scared to watch it with my projector.

I have been re-watching the Harry Potter series before I watch the Death 1 and 2.

So far I watched The first and second film of the series.
They do not look much better then up-rez DVD.

The Paramount version only has lossy audio tracks. The BVHE version has PCM 5.1. I didn't realize this until I saw this thread and did a little research. I quickly placed an order for the Buena Vista version. Don't really care much for special features.

Welcome to the world of early Warner

Neither of them excel in the visual department. As much they DNR'd the US release, I can tolerate it more than the EE on the Buena Vista disc.

I take it they must have re-issued/remastered those early Harry Potter movies on Blu-ray. If so, are they better than the older ones?

The Harry Potter movies have not been remastered. The Extended Editions looks pretty much the same as the original releases.

They are underwhelming, but the previous poster is exaggerating when he says that they look like DVD. Clearly, he hasn't tried to watch the actually DVDs for these movies.

The reissues have all been the same discs. Warner nearly never remasters. (Only Full Metal Jacket and Lethal Weapon 1&2 come to mind)

Warner = same encode, maybe new soundtrack or disc art if you are lucky!
