Need advise for speaker for my newly finished basement

I just finished my basement and have got Yamaha-5063 as a receiver and Epson 8350 projector but I need to get speaker.

Since I am new, I can't post photo but I will try to explain in words ..
  • Home theater part of my basement is 17x22
  • My budget is not more than $400-$500.
  • Mostly I will be using it for watching movies and sports.

From what I have read here, this is not a good budget but really I can't spend more at this time. I read good things about Energy RC micro 5.1 but sounds like that's not good for the size of my basement.

Maybe. for now I can get 2 front and center speaker now with my budget and wait for few months and later get rear speaker? I am not sure and looking for your advise.

If you're cash strapped, just get the front L/R pair and then add the matching center and/or surrounds at a later date. The sub can come last if necessary and does not have to be from the same manufacturer. HSU, SVS, and Rhythmic are three sub makers that are pretty hot here.

Don't skimp on your speakers just to add a center at the same time.

Recommended bang vs. buck speakers that should work for your room size.

Thanks for your response.

Yes, it's in a basement and for home theater (17x22). There is other open area where I have a ping-pong table and exercise equipment.

So those RC Micro is no no, right? Here is my basement plan - Orange are is for home theater. BTW, I do have some old speaker and sub-woofer (Jensen). Specially 5 speakers are not working right...i.e. sound terrible and definitely need an upgrade.



I got a cheap screen for now but open to any suggestion.

PJ? I assume you are referring to ceiling height ...it's 8'. Sorry, if I assumed wrong.

Unless your pj is acoustically transparent and you have enough depth behind the screen, you are probably limited to speakers that are no taller than 36". That's assuming you want to place them below the screen.

No knowing much in this area, does it matter? Why no taller than 36"?

Although, I don't have room for satellite speaker on either side of the screen and I am leaning towards tower speakers too.

In any case, I will check out speakers Dan suggested but any other opinion are welcome too.

Sorry it took a while to get back to you. Computer problems.

What are your current screen dimensions? How wide is your screen wall?

Unless you want to spring for an acoustically transparent screen (SeymourAV, SVS, etc.) and in-wall left/center/right speakers behind it, you'll need to get three identical speakers that will fit underneath your screen. That's not ideal, but you have to work with what you have unless you're up to rearranging some things around in your basement to make it more conducive to a home theater environment.

The former idea with AT screen and in-walls would be a lot better, though more expensive, than the latter since it would elevate your speakers to a more normal listening height with their tweeters closer to ear level.

Another pointer: you really don't want your seating right up against the back wall. It makes it less than ideal for proper surround sound.

L-shaped seating arrangements are also not recommended as those people sitting on the sides will have to sit awkwardly and crane their necks to see the screen properly.

The Arx A3 is too tall to go under your current screen. Try the A1 bookshelf instead.
