Denon Zone 2 vs Speaker A/B subwoofer question.

I have an old Denon AVR-687 to replace an even older Onkyo. My question is, I live in a small studio, and have a 5.1 setup for my TV, and a completely separate 2.1 setup with a different amp in the rear of the room.

I'd like to use the Denon to power the 2 speakers in the back, and use the same sub from the 5.1 setup. Is this possible when using the former 2.1 speakers for Zone 2? Is the Sub always on when using Zone 2?

Or should I just use speaker B for the rear 2.1 and that will allow me to use the extra speakers and the 5.1 sub.

Preferably I would like to use Zone 2 for the rear speakers and shared sub, so I can use different inputs when necessary.

The sub would of course be ON when playing the same source in both the main zone (5.1) and Zone 2; however, not when just playing Zone 2. Connecting the rear speakers as Front B, then using the custom STEREO settings to include the sub would be one option. Another would be adding a sub with speaker in/out posts in which to connect both the AVR and the rear speakers if you wanted independent source capability to Zone 2.
