My "Out of Africa" theater is "FINISHED" - Page 2

Here's a pic of the stage covered up and the pile of wood for the soffits. The stage is SOLID and doesn't resonate or sound hollow at all - good thing we hid all that sand in there.

The soffits is getting built as well as the rounded procenium (sp?) thing above the stage.

What's the saying: "If there is no pictures, it didn't happen" right? Well, here's the proof - Pink stuff added!


Sealant applied and ready to be screwed shut - forever hopefully (Too late now to remember something that you forgot to put in/through this thing )


The next pics show the start of the "boxing-in" of the aircon and the projector rack beneath it.


** usefull tip ** If you want to drill a hole in something, aspecially a brick wall, stick a plastic or paperbag with tape right under the hole to catch up the dust and debris falling down. No mess, no fuss!

Here is the 2"x2" angle iron bolted with Rawl-bolts to the wall - this thing must be strong 'cause my Panny PJ's life will depend on it.

The soffits:




The soffits will have a RGB colour changing LED stiplight around the bottom part hidden behind a crown-moulding. The soffits will be painted but I'm not yet sure what colour to do it in. The main colourscheme of the HT wil be a deep velvetty red and black. I was thinking of a very dark charcoal as I don't know if all black soffits and columns would be TOO much. The wall panels between the columns will be the red material. The carpet colour is also still undecided - was also thinking of a dark greyish or charcoal.

The space between the soffit and the star ceiling will be about 20" all around. I was thinking of making this space a light colour to show of the different colours of the strip light more clearly and also to be a definate border for the star ceiling when the lights are on.

The Ticket Booth:

I wanted a faux ticket booth right from the start after seeing some folks' nice setups on this great forum. I don't have alot of space in the foyer/entrance to my HT so I decided to do a flat - 20cm (or about 8" for our metrically chalanged friends in the States ) - booth against the wall directly as you enter the HT from the main entrance hall of the house. I borrwed a few designs form some of the great booths around here and mixed them all together to design mine. A BIG part of the design comes from Bud's (chinadog) - Thank you Bud, hope you don't mind

Like most of the construction in my HT it will also be made in Supawood or MDF as it's also called. I will paint/stain it at a later stage to go with the colour scheme.

I don't know how some of you guys keep your working space so very neat and clean - I can't. I will work till I get frustrated looking for one or other tool and then I'll clean up everything till it's looking like a warzone again. Then I also have a 4 and a half year old little girl that likes to play by her daddy while he's working, and then just leaves her stuff lying all over the place (I swear that's not my doll!) So please pardon the chaos. Makes me think of a famous movie quote : "The horror,.........the horror......."

G'day Greg, thank you. I've been following your thread as well ands it's looking very nice so far. HT building sure is some heavy back-breaking work if you do it all by yourself but what keeps me going is the mental picture I have of myself sitting in one of the comfy chairs in my finished HT and watching a great flick. We'll see how far I get before the money runs out.

PS. It's nice to see more and more of our "Southern Hemisphere Guys" building HT's

Big, yes i have. I actually work till 7 EVERY night, weekends included. My real name is Clark Kent No really, I work my arse off in the HT every night after work till late, but the truth is I'm really a lil' bit behind on my postings in this forum and am catching up as I am able to.

I'm really VERY exited and can still not believe that this dream of so many years is actually happening now. I hope everything turns out as planned.

Please tell me if you see something that I must pay attention to that I may be doing wrong, so that I can fix it if possible.

Cool idea of using the PVC pipe calimark.

The screenwall is very sturdy without using thick and heavy 2x4's. Sorry if the pics are a bit dark and out of focus (camera old and not up to sctracth any more). My planned masking system will utilise the flat MDF boards around the screen. I'm busy working on the electronics and mechanics of the IR masking system, will post pics as soon as it's finished.

John, that looks very nice, I'll have to keep that in mind as well. No need to be jealous, your build is comming together very nicely!!

The columns are taking shape!

There will be 10 columns in the HT under the soffits. They will be covered with a black fabric with loose grille covers covered in black AT material. Only 2 will not house any speakers. I could't decide on a nice shape for the back corner columns but eventually I decided on a design that I think would not look too bad.

The columns is a fairly simple design that won't be to diffucult to wrap in the material. It consists of two boxes, one on top and the other on the bottom, joined by pillars and a space for the speakers to go against the wall.

The white grilles in the bottom of the corner columns is where the fresh air enter the room and will be exhausted into the attic behide the false screenwall in the upper righthand corner.

The piece of MDF above the opening for the PJ will have a grille in for the aircon air to come out. It's on order and should have been here already in the beginning of Desember

Johan, I'll also speak english for the sake of our "International audience". What have you used behind your nice fabric panels for the sound absorbtion? Your HT looks very nice, I bet you enjoy it very much.
