My "Out of Africa" theater is "FINISHED" - Page 15

I still have nightmares about my horrible experiences up in the attic. 120 degrees, dark, cramped, itchy.........Ah!! eek.gif

Congratulations on sticking through it. Having that insulation up there is a good thing.
I wear a mechanic suit and duck tape the leg and arm openings while wearing a hood and gloves when it comes to working with insulation smile.gif

but what Im wondering could blown insulation work just as well?

Hi guys. It was so hot and I just wanted to get it over with, so I just said to myself: Oh, just stuff it! I wore a PT short, T-shirt, barefoot (except when I entered the attic) and a breathing mask. Never again! Luckily it's finished now.

Daniel, I considered blown in insulation - I think it would work great - but it would have cost more and the biggest reason I decided against it is, anal me, I don' trust ANYBODY up there. It would just take one careless step, by one careless dude, through the ceiling into the soffits or worse, the star ceiling, to provoke me to attack him fiercely, with bare hands, clenched around his hissing windpipe, my eyes bulging in my sockets, screaming like a banshee............No, let's not go there. redface.gifbiggrin.gif

looking good grasshopper....but why didnt you do the attic first and work your way down/out of the room?
I know you must have good reason, b/c so far you had everythign planned pretty good.

Hi calimark, the WIRES my friend, all those blooming WIRES! and the fastening of the star ceiling as well. (another, maybe the biggest reason, is my GREAT ability to always postpone the biggest or hardest job till the end! redface.gif )

Another little step closer to the finish line. The Aura bass shakers I've ordered have arrived! Yipeee! They are much bigger than I though. The pics on the website make them look smaller.

Here are the little landmines lined up on the stage, ready to be mounted.

Looks like one of the little alien robots from *batteries not included

This is how and where I attached the bass shakers to the chairs. The leather back flap just hangs down now and cover the shaker.

I like the effect of the shakers. I don't have a projecter yet so I "listened" some parts of movies with heavy LFE like the depth charge scenes in U-571. I use a cheap amp I've ordered from Amazon, so it does'nt kick you out of the chair, but still get a good effect. I also bought a 8 channel speaker selector and use it to individually switch the seven chairs' kickers on or off if the occupant don't like the effect. biggrin.gif I also programmed the amp's IR into my Harmony remote to be able to adjust the effect on the fly as well.

Looking good! I love my Aura Pros as well. They are definitely a cool upgrade.

Hi Austin, how are you? How's that Outdoor Paradise space of yours comming along? Any new pics?

Daniel, they are much cheaper - a literate "bang" for the buck. wink.gif

Things have been pretty good for me lately. I've been super busy with school though. Being away from your theater for over a month is taxing on the mind! eek.gif

There's some completed pictures of the backyard on the last page of my build thread. The only thing left to do is put a fresh coat of stain on both decks in the spring. It turned out great!
I've just read thru this thread. Absolutely spectacular job! One of the nicest theaters I've seen on AVS...

Hi Search. What a GREAT compliment! Thank you so much.

All I need now to watch my first movie is the projector. Panny PT-AE8000 is comming out at the end of November here in SA. I must still come up with the money, but I believe I'll get it before the year is out. biggrin.gif With all the strikes and bad economy here in SA it's anybody guess if it will be here come end of Nov.

Will

Hi there Will,

Not long to wait now for the projector. I was reading the specs on the 8000 and it looks like a fantastically bright 3D projector at a very good price. It looks like it's going to be pricey in Aus as well but may be the subject of a grey import for me. They seem to be floating around with some US sellers who ship to Australia for about $AUD2500 - 3000, which seems fair. My HC6800 is still going like a trouper. About 700 hours on the lamp and still filling a 145 inch scope screen in low eco lamp mode. Do I really need a new projector... probably not. I am really looking forward to hearing your thoughts when you get it installed. Hope you have your 3D blu rays ready for opening night. Avatar and Prometheus on your list????

Cheers

Greg

Hi Greg. This hobby is getting more and more expensive every day!! With the 3D Blu's you're talking about, don't forget about the 3D glasses eek.gif
At this stage, my HT is just a very expensive music listening room. mad.gif I've got all my CD's and music on my Android tablet and it works GREAT with the Yamaha App to stream music directly from the tablet to the amp. I've spend a few evenings in there just listening to my favourite songs. I'm going crazy waiting for the projector!!!!!!
Hi Will. And I thought I was frustrated! It will be there soon enough. As for glasses, I bought my 3d Samsung glasses on eBay for about half rrp and all 3d bluray discs are region free. Amazon is your friend. Enjoy your music. I think you will enjoy that more than watching the Australians crush your cricketers.....

Hallo RT, dit gaan baie goed met my, dankie dat jy vra. Nee, die garnale het darem nog nie oorgeneem nie! wink.gif

I am waiting VERY ANXIOUSLY for my PJ to arrive! The shipment for SA's first batch of Panasonic PT-AE8000's are waiting in coustoms mad.gifmad.gif If you lived in South Africa, you will know that it can take anything from milenia to eternity for anything to happen here!! rolleyes.gif It should arrive today at the shop and the lady promised me she'll phone me as soon as the PJ is with her.

I've add a few other goodies to my rack - this reminds me to take some new pics! I'll try to do that tonight and post tomorrow.

I'M IN HOME THEATER LIMBO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My wife summed it up pretty well when she told me one day: "The way the HT is now is like having a brand, spanking-new super sports car: You can sit in the nice, soft leather seats, even adjust them, listen to music with the state-of-the-art sound system, put down the roof to see the stars twinkling, but without the engine you CANNOT DRIVE ANYWHERE! eek.gif

But SOON, hopefully, my preciousssss will be in working order.........

Will
That is excellent news my friend. Your wife brings a great example of what a theater is. A mixing of several elements coming together for ultimate enjoyment. If you are missing one element, yes you can appreciate your room, but you can't totally enjoy it. She is a smart woman that one. I'd hold on to her if I were you.

Looking forward to seeing some updated photos from you. Glad to hear the prawn have not yet taken over.

Regards,

RTROSE

Hi Will. Did that projector arrive yesterday? What a fantastic Christmas present it will be to have your room up and running for the festive season. By the way... consider this a big serving of humble pie for the proteas victory in the cricket. Close series but undoubtedly the best team took the honours. Cheers and merry Christmas to you and yours. Greg.
Nice thread, great idea of a flat panel used for posters! That should drive those damn poster light box prices down...

Hi Greg, how's it mate? 'Bout the cricket, at least we are still good with SOMETHING! (If crime was a national sport, we would definitely be the world champs!! rolleyes.gif ) Thanx for the goos wishes - the same to you and your family. The PJ has not arrived yet. I don't want to phone the lady everyday and sound like a broken record: "Hi, me again, have the Pannys arrived yet? No, just checking, thank you anyway......you'll phone me as soon as they arrive, right?..?"

I hate it to wait for something!! mad.gif

Have a nice and sunny Christmas Downunder (no white Christmas's for us) biggrin.gif

Elmo, thank you for popping into my thread. Your HT is comming along nicely. The closer you get to the finish line, the harder it feels to do anything. Just hang in there and picture yourself watching movies in your own HT. smile.gif

ps. VERY nice house and garden!!
Howdy Will,

good to hear from you after quite a while!

Keep cool man, as your PJ will be the shooting star at your X'mas party pretty soon....cool.gif

BTW, keep pictures coming in, ok?wink.gif
post #445 of 467
Yeah this thread is fun to read, definitely the most pictures I've seen ina build thread on here - a lot more fun to read than text!
Great looking theater. Not sure how I missed this one. You're going to love the bass shakers. I still need to install mine in my new seats.

It's here! It's here! IT IS HERE!!

At long last biggrin.gifbiggrin.gifbiggrin.gif

The image looks great! No moire on the screen. Masking works great. DVD looks OK but should improve a lot when I get the Oppo 103 someday.
I was up till after 1am setting up the PJ and tweaking and calibrating it.

Here it is in it's little "nest"

And with the lenscap off:

Ain't she a beaut? wink.gif

I will take the obligatory screen shots sometime with my tripod.

I can't believe I have a real Movie Theater in my home!! I still has'nt sinked in yet!

Thanx for letting me share my journey with you GREAT folks on this WONDERFULL forum!!

Till later

Will

Awesome!! This was one amazing build. I'm glad I was able to follow along from the beginning.
Good on you Will. After all your work you richly deserve such an amazing room. May it bring you and your family many many years of pleasure. Cheers and merry Christmas to you! Thanks for sharing your journey.... it's been quite a ride. Greg.

That sky mural fits in great. I'm always hesistant considering it as I want pure black and nothing to distract me, do you guys typically dim the stars out when the movie starts?
