Scary chief mount for JVC RS45

i was installing my chief mount rpa 281 on my rs45 this weekend. the part of the mount frame that attaches to the rs45 itself is secured by 4 pan head philips screws measuring m5 x 20mm and 4 washers, all of which are supplied by chief in the package. in attaching these screws, you have to remove the 4 feet of the projector. in doing that, you will notice that the screws that are attached to the feet and closer to 30mm in length. after attaching the washer onto the m5 x 20mm screws, i was able to screw in only maybe 2-3 threads before encountering resistance (i.e., that was about as far as it goes).

to me, having a 35 lb. projector sitting 8 feet off the ground, directly over my head, secured by 2 threads is downright scary. all the over-engineering they did on the ceiling mount bracket and extension column to make them super strong seems like a waste when the weakest link of the whole support system are the 2 threads holding the projector to the mounting bracket.

i went to home depot, and bought m5 x 30mm allen head screws (all they had in m5 size) and swtiched the chief m5 x 20mm screws out. the m5 x 30mm is about the same length as the screw attached to the stock feet of the projector so no worries about it going in too deep.

fyi, i called chief and their engineer who designs their mounts told the rep on the phone with me that having a minimum of 2 threads in the hole is sufficient to hold the projector securely.

the $1.50 i paid for longer screws gave me more piece of mind than the engineer's comment.

The general "rule of thumb" I've always used is that the bolt should be screwed in at least as far as its diameter (ie, 1/4" bolt should be engaged at least 1/4").

$1.50 is certainly worth the piece of mind.

2 threads x4 is sufficient to hold the load but leave too much room for mistakes.

I would spend the six quarters.

I wonder if you got the wrong screws?

This rings a bell from last year when Chief was modifying their RPA universal mount to fit the RS40. At the time, I thought one of the issues was that the screws that came with the universal version of the mount were too short and barely engaged any threads, and one of the things they did (in addition to a custom plate) for the RS40 specific version of the mount was to include longer screws. Does anybody else remember this, or am I imagining it?

Maybe they packaged the wrong set by mistake?

nope. i confirmed with chief that the included m5 x 20mm screws were the correct ones.

i still don't see how, after talking to their engineer who designs their mounts, they can still claim that 2 threads if even to secure the projector to the mount. as stated above, there is too much room for mistakes. simply from a liability standpoint/cost standpoint, why would you NOT simply include screws that were 10mm longer?! it is unquestionably safer (15 threads backing out is harder/less likely than 2 backing out), and it costs just pennies (maybe 2-3 cents?) more to produce. the trade-off, i would think, is a no-brainer. cheap insurance against a lawsuit if you ask me.

I noticed this also. The screws included with the Cheif are correct according to the JVC manual which specifies a screw between 13mm and 23mm. JVC may have made a running change to the projectors. Anyway, made a trip to the hardware store to get longer screws, I think I used 25mm and they were perfect.

I used the chief mount on the rs45 and the screws went in alot more than two turns. They work just fine. Remember the feet the unit come with are for adjusting the angle of the projector when it's on a table.

Hey all

I also had the same problem.
they called between 19 to 24mm max(going from memory).

I used 30mm(also from memory) and work perfect.
Nice and thight.

Sometime a piece of mine is Priceless
