i was installing my chief mount rpa 281 on my rs45 this weekend. the part of the mount frame that attaches to the rs45 itself is secured by 4 pan head philips screws measuring m5 x 20mm and 4 washers, all of which are supplied by chief in the package. in attaching these screws, you have to remove the 4 feet of the projector. in doing that, you will notice that the screws that are attached to the feet and closer to 30mm in length. after attaching the washer onto the m5 x 20mm screws, i was able to screw in only maybe 2-3 threads before encountering resistance (i.e., that was about as far as it goes).
to me, having a 35 lb. projector sitting 8 feet off the ground, directly over my head, secured by 2 threads is downright scary. all the over-engineering they did on the ceiling mount bracket and extension column to make them super strong seems like a waste when the weakest link of the whole support system are the 2 threads holding the projector to the mounting bracket.
i went to home depot, and bought m5 x 30mm allen head screws (all they had in m5 size) and swtiched the chief m5 x 20mm screws out. the m5 x 30mm is about the same length as the screw attached to the stock feet of the projector so no worries about it going in too deep.
fyi, i called chief and their engineer who designs their mounts told the rep on the phone with me that having a minimum of 2 threads in the hole is sufficient to hold the projector securely.
the $1.50 i paid for longer screws gave me more piece of mind than the engineer's comment.
