I don't do USB. That's why I built a 10TB unRaid server. wink.gif

Hey guys,

There has been an effort to provide some sort of interim solution for the 3D 23.976Hz playback and the screen centering issue since both of these rank pretty high on the priority ladder.

What has been provided is alpha/beta-quality firmware based on new 2.x SDK that resolve these two issues. Due to the alpha/beta nature of the firmware, there are numerous quirks with it. Users who are not significantly affected by the 3D 23.976Hz and centering issue are encouraged to continue using the 1.x version of firmware. For users who are greatly affected by these two issues, send me a PM and I will give you the download links for the alpha/beta firmware. We would rather not publicly post beta firmware address since it's not a good idea for general users to use these. The alpha/beta firmware is good for those users that only want to use the player as a powerful 3D-capable player.

For the 1.x firmware, there will be a new 1.0.4.22 release that fixes SAMBA hostname settings and boot-up screen format. This does not address the issue that some users have with long boot delays or failure to boot. The firmware programmers continue to investigate this issue.

Thanks for the positive news Jack. I know quite a few people on here especially eagle_2 who will want to try out the firmware.

As always I appreciate yours and Micca's continued support for your customers and I hope

we continue to get closer to a day when the EP950 is mostly bug free/stable :)

sent you pm @jack

i want to try the alpha/beta firmware

Thanks for the positive news, Jack. Proves that Micca is standing behind the products and doing the right improvements.

testing the alpha/firmware

few bugs of course...
very modern interface
playback went very well in 2D and 3D, no frame skips or shutter in 100 inch screen
samba work perfectly
hard drive work perfectly

it was the first media player i saw that shows 23,97 in my epson tw6000 playing a full iso blu-ray 2D.

in 3D playback continue to show at 23,99hz but no shutter or frame skip in a 100 inch screen

iso ok
mkv ok
some of functions are very similar to med1000x3d....if is not same sdk they are close.

in my opinion the playback is perfect with dolby digital (there was a bug with dts.hd ) just need some work to fix some of the bugs and add a few more features, i recomended a test if you are enthusiast.

regards
canton

@jack micca

when returning to 1.x firmware theres a error in instrucions in blue

After the above steps, the firmware update is complete. To restore 1.x firmware, use the following steps:
Unzip EP950-EP600-G2-Bootloader-5505.zip and copy the install.img file onto an empty USB drive. Use the recovery method to flash the 5505 bootcode into the EP600 G2 and EP950.
Once the player finishes flashing the bootcode, confirm that you now have the 5505 bootcode by checking Settings->Misc->Kernel Version
Download and unzip the latest 1.x firmware and copy the install.img file onto an empty USB drive. Use the recovery method to flash the new firmware.
Once the player finishes flashing the firmware, it will restart.

what shows up is Settings->Misc->Kernel Version #2 not the 5505 boot code

well everything went well on returning to 1.0.4.22

who needs a alpha/beta

testing the version EP950 Firmware 1.0.4.22

23,97hz in 2D (info epson tw6000)
23,99hz in 3D (info epson tw6000)

samba works ok
nfs great improvement since last firmware but still need work to be done.

i keep records when i found issues, when im testing new firmware i no where to look.

improve shutter at 1h11m in underword awakening 3d

but still a issue with full iso despicable me 2d and 3d with audio drops (nfs or samba )
but still a issue with full iso immortals 3d with audio drop at 1h41 in the end of movie.
still a hdmi hanshake between micca and epson tw6000

playback in 2d and 3d is very smooth no visible frame skip or audio drops......in a 100inch screen.

new feature: in movies, music or photo there always the network/upnp/samba/usb

a note to @eagle_2: i try 10 time in a row to test the boot and hasnt failed me once...

a note to @jack micca the most stable version i had was 1.0.3.9 - March 2012 ( there was no samba just NFS
but all the movies had perfect playback

Very interesting. I'm very glad to see Micca taking these issues seriously. That makes me feel more confident that Micca will eventually resolve these issues. And thanks for keeping us posted on these changes.

So, do I understand then that this new alpha/beta firmware doesn't solve the 23.976 3D playback yet? Also, will there be any issues if I want to flash back to my current firmware? Canton160 mentioned an error.

I was playing some slideshows last night when I realized the images were playing out of order. I checked and the files were numbered 01.jpg, 02.jpg, 03.jpg, etc. - But here's how they appear in the file structure of the EP950:

01.jpg
02.jpg
03.jpg
04.jpg
05.jpg
06.jpg
07.jpg
08.jpg
09.jpg
10.jpg
100.jpg
101.jpg
102.jpg
103.jpg
104.jpg
105.jpg
106.jpg
107.jpg
108.jpg
109.jpg
11.jpg
110.jpg
111.jpg
112.jpg
113.jpg
114.jpg

So this is the order they play back in, obviously out of order. Can this be fixed so that Micca displays and plays the files sequentially like Windows does, by sorting the numbers the way we would normally have them? The WDTV Live also lists them this way so it's not just the Micca, but this really messes up my slideshows. I have way too many images to go through them all and rename them, plus I want to keep the names as they are.

I am using the new Alpha firmware and can confirm that the 23.976Hz issue is not fixed. As before, 2D is correct, but 3D is wrong. I haven't tried flashing back to the old firmware, but I think it should work fine.

I happened to have a HDMI timing analyzer, and have attached the disappointing results (see the "Vertical rate" line).

You tested the EP600 G2? Means after all in 3D periodic stutters are observed?

Also, as it turns out MED1000X3D always gives 24.00Hz in 2D/3D : http://www.avsforum.com/t/1420605/med1000x3d-high-definition-3d-multimedia-player/180#post_22438803 , but in changelogs declared correct playback 23.976fps. How is this possible?

Yes, I have an EP600 G2. After installing the test firmware, I first played back multiple 3D files and determined that the stuttering, consistent with 24.000Hz playback for 23.976Hz content, was present. After that, I measured the frame rate and confirmed it.

3D- 23,99hz
the info button using the remote button from med1000x3d in 2D or 3D is 23.976hz lastest version.

Hi Jack,

Ok I would like to comment on one thing that I notice in the firmware. I totally understand that it is

alpha/beta but I would like to speak out about this early just in case this setting makes it into the

final.

The folders and files in the file manager of the current 1.X firmware sorts the folders alphabetically

first and then list the files alphabetically next. The alpha 2.x sorts all files and folders together which

causes files and folders to be jumbled.

So basically I am saying that I MUCH prefer the old way of sorting. Unless somebody can

enlighten me as to some advantage of sorting all together.

Also maybe they could offer an extra sort option for us to make the decision ourselves.

The off center issue is definately resolved I am happy to notice in the alpha so that is positive

news.

Known issues with the alpha/beta firmware:
The menu shows a DTV feature - this does not work at all. Do not try to use.
The Internet content streaming features under "Premium Apps" do not work at all.
The player defaults to displaying files by date. Changing the sort order to file name will not be remembered.
In general, many features will not work, or will not work as expected.

Hi canton160,

Yeah I know about the sorting options not being saved but I am not referring to that problem in my post.

I am pointing out the fact that the firmware treats files and folders the same in the list. I really hope

we get an option to select our preference when it comes out of beta. My old Realtek 1073 player

had the same 'problem' in the later firmwares so it is clear somebody is changing the sort method

for some reason

Example of a folder list  on the current firmware.

i wish more companies send their beta firmwares , before the public release, the final result would be a lot more positive for everyone.

have you look at google? their latest versions of products like chrome etc are always in beta version....and a good product is never finished, theres always a improvment to do.....

critics like yours that post in a topic without having a micca product, should re-think their opinion before write it.

@jack micca

gusgus748s is being left out, can you provide him a free ep600 g2 (this is second time I'm asking you) biggrin.gifbiggrin.gifbiggrin.gif

Thanks for the offer, but I'll pass. I don't like being a tester. That's why you don't see me owning a Micca. I learned my lesson after buying a PCH-A300.
Hi,

I just buy a EP950 a week ago... So far so good, for my use, the player work really well... Great job Micca :-)

One question, when I plug my USB cable to be able to transfer file from my computer to Micca internal hard drive the media player cannot be use. To use the media player, I need to unplug the usb cable. Is there a way to transfer file from computer but wihout connecting and disconnecting the usb cable every time?

Well another but slower method that allows you to use the Micca while copying would be to use a network cable

to connect the computer to the EP950 either directly or through a network switch.

Yeah this is definitely an issue and hopefully it will get resolved by the time its out of beta. Way too confusing this way.

Is that slower? I gave that a shot a few months ago and found it very difficult to get my Windows 7 machine to play nice with the Micca like this, and when it finally did I wasn't even sure what I did to get it working, and it seemed slower even than USB, using a gigabit switch and network cable.

I wish I could leave the USB plugged in and have a choice once the Micca boots if I want it to boot to player or just act as an external storage device. I hate having to plug and unplug the USB cable endlessly every time I transfer something to the Micca.

Yeah using the network is slower. I can only get around 100mbps or around 12.5 megabytes per second over wired network

and about half that over wireless due to the half duplex nature of over the air connections. Over USB 3.0 I get up to

600mbps or around 75+ megabytes per second with large files at times. Over USB 2.0 I get the standard 25-30 megabytes

per second. It could be worse believe me, some of the WD models have no USB slave port at all which forces you

to upload files over network cable which can take several hours to fill a 1TB drive

I came across an issue tonight with, I think, seamless branching.

I was watching my BDMV rip of "Alien" blu ray, which is authored with two versions of the film using seamless branching.

When playing back, I presume it defaults to the original theatrical release (though how does the Micca "know" this?) But the more immediate issue is momentary glitches at what I believe are the branches for the extended version - momentary freezes as though its about to branch but then continues to play the next edit normally.

Is this a known issue, or are their work arounds? And without menu access, can one ever have access to both versions of the movies, or does the lack of menu support make this not possible? Don't know if an ISO wold be better for these type of discs either...

Thanks

Thanks I will look at that option - will it also work for bdmv folders or will I have to re rip those?
