I have experienced a repeated crash by Micca EP950 when leaving the Devices/UPnP menu. I think this has been mentioned before without solution and I am hoping this gets fixed in the next firmware release. I am using 22.214.171.124 for these observations.
When viewing the Devices(All) menu I see the HDD, Network, UPnP, NFS and maybe the Card choices. I can choose any of those and they work fine. I can choose the UPnP and I see my Serviio DLNA service and something from a satellite DVR without content. That is the same as shown by my Samsung BluRay player with DLNA player. I can click on the Serviio and watch videos the same as using the Samsung. When exiting the video I am returned to the Devices/UPnP showing the Serviio and the satellite DVR. Everything is fine at this point. From here leaving the Devices/UPnP list and returning to the Devices(All) causes the Micca to display the Devices(All) page and crash showing FILE on the front panel. Instead, pushing the Setup menu causes the Micca to go to the Setup Menu and crash showing the SETUP on the front panel.
The same crash occurs if I just push the return button after pushing the UPnP selection and don't select either the Serviio or the DVR. So I don't think this problem is related to the UPnP or DLNA servers just in the user interface software for exiting the UPnP menu. These crashes happen every time after exiting the UPnP menu whether a selection is made or not.
I have been looking for the problem in the 126.96.36.199 firmware. The problem might be within the player binary where I can't do much except look around the /sys and /proc directories. I wonder if the problem might have already been solved with the new firmware. If not I would like to disable the UPnP choice to stop the possibility of a crash if the problem can't be fixed because I am afraid of disk corruption when the crash occurs. My only choice is to unplug the power when these crashes happen.
I am just beginning to look around for the cause now. So far I have found the /etc/mtab points to /proc/mtab which does not exist. I have experimented with making /etc/mtab a symbolic link from /proc/mounts except the UPnP problem continues. I don't know if anything even uses the /etc/mtab and haven't noticed any difference. I am looking for the file where the Devices(All) and the Devices/UPnP are displayed to get an idea of where next to explore.
I haven't had any other serious issues with the Micca EP950 and expect the player's features to work for my limited purposes. I don't use 3D so those issues are a separate matter from my uses. My videos are fairly simple and have all played nicely. The crashing of the EP950 when leaving the UPnP menu is the serious item on my list and I hope the problem is solved in the new interface or the new SDK or someplace. In irony, I don't really need the UPnP at all and the problem just makes me worry about my hard disk. Otherwise I am happy with the Micca after my first two weeks.
Edit: I have looked at some of the code and found the Devices.rss. This code treats all of the storage devices the same. Because the exit from the HDD, Network and NFS devices are free of problems there shouldn't be any difference there when exiting from the UPnP device. I now think the problem might be in the main program where the list of devices is maintained except I can't understand where there could be a problem when jumping from UPnP to Setup so this is confusing. I haven't looked at much code for years now so maybe I am too rusty.
Edit2: Now I think the problem might be within the DvdPlayer binary. I did get the Micca to exit the UPnP page one time without crashing out of maybe 30 attempts so there must be something intermittent. I sure hope I am not the only one having this problem.
Edit3: I just tried the Himedia 188.8.131.52 firmware and the problem is the same. I tried with Android enabled at boot and without and still have the same crash both ways with both firmwares. The Device/Network choice works fine and connects to the Windows shares fine and even allows the files to be copied to the Micca where the UPnP does not. The exit from the Devices/Network to the Devices/All is without problem where the exit from Devices/UPnP causes the crash.Edited by mods41 - 10/29/12 at 3:44am
