Screen sizes without CIH for a newb???

Does everyone just get a hugh DIY screen to take the different aspect ratios??? I would like the maximum image I can get without neck strain for 2.35:1, 16:9, and 4:3, with the majority being 16:9.

I cant seem to tell how big of a screen to make. I know I want a 10' wide 2.35 screen which will put the height a few inches over 4ft. But I would also like the maximum 4:3 screen for our ~7'8" tall ceiling. Does that mean I should get a piece of screen material at 10' w x 6.5' H??? My intent is to do an AT screenwall, I do know I would actually need a little more material for frame attachment. But is this the right Idea??? I would use velvet fabric on dowels to mask the screen to 16:9 for most viewing.

For my $.02, you'll be happier maximizing for 16:9 and taking the 2.35:1 for what it is. The most common 16:9 material used here is Sintra that has a max width of 5' making for a 120" diagonal 16:9. I would be wary of trying to put too much into your low ceiling room. Consider ceiling proximity and speaker placement. If you choose bigger, then patching solid material or stretching cloth over frame are your options. Have fun.

I agonized over this myself and finally decided a 16:9 142" screen was perfect for a 7.5 basement ceiling. Yeah, I live with black edges top and bottom for 2.35:1, but I'm used to it and all my TV stuff is 16:9. I toyed with masking for a real movie affect, but my laziness just gets in the way of doing the work. That size screen gives a nice wide screen effect for 2.35 and an almost IMAX effect for 16:9, especially 3D.

We do want the left, right, and upper curtains so they can double as stage curtains for our kids. The lower curtain would be the only one we would need to add. Most of the time I am sure will be 16:9 with us dealing with the bars, but we want the full size images with masking for visitors and big games at our house. Can projectors be preset to work like this picture???

Typically, the option for many projectors is to fit the 16:9, 4:3, etc. inside the 2.35:1 or sometime a slightly inbetween screen size to average out all screen sizes--but then you lose some of the image. Pick the projector you desire and download the manual and see what it offers--or go to that forum and ask.

Yes, if you had a 16:9 screen, then the other screen widths fit inside it. However, some projectors have the ability to fit 16:9 and 4:3 inside a 2.35:1 or similar screen size as follows:

Hey! That last one looks like the one I got for Good Behavior.

I cannot see why anyone would not want to exercise the potential of CHI providing their PJ has Lens Shift and Zoom.

In the illustration below, all the Masking that is required is easily accommodated Side Panels or Side-Pull Curtains. If one wants to effect a true "Stage" appearance, a simple Valance
set across the Top not only achieves that, it hides the "Side Pull Curtain" Travis Rods as well.



Note to threed123: Mine is bigger than yours.

Thank you for your figures.

So with ~7'6"H ceiling, minus 1 ft top and bottom, we have 5'6" for screen height(66").

The 16:9 and 4:3 will be limited by height first so
66" x 1.77 = 116.82"W for 16:9
66" x 1.33 = 87.78" w for 4:3

The available total width is 11'6", minus 9" on each side, we have 10' for screen width(120")

The 2.35:1 will be limited by width first so
120"w/ 2.35 = 51.06" H for 2.35:1

So the possible screen real estate would be 66"h x120"w, and I would need extra fabric to wrap the screen framing. Does this all sound right???


The 16:9 suprises me the most, I was not expecting it to be so wide/large at that height. I really thought the 2.35:1 would be much taller than 4'3". Our room will be ~19ft deep, after the false wall, with the seating eyeballs at ~15ft. Does this sound too big for the 16x9???
