"Smart" TV VS Roku (or similar)

Thread Starter
Hello,

I am thinking if it would be better to buy for my parents a "Smart" TV, or just a regular LCD/LED TV + Roku (or similar device).

It will be used mostly for Netflix and other online video, not for facebook or anything of that sort. I am particularly looking for a device with good Netflix integration that can also show subtitles (can smart TVs do that?)

My parents are not tech savvy so simplicity is also important.

Thanks

I would go with the Roku, it has far more choices as far as channels go. I watch movies on Crackle and Midnight movies as well as Netflix itself.

Go with Roku. I was amazed at the number of choices available on my brother-in-law's Roku box.

I had a smart TV and found that the ROKU worked better and offered more choices in programming.

Another option could be to get Blue Ray player with smart TV functions, but that could be not as good as Roku either.
