Jaws - Robert Harris review (see post #1 for link) - Page 15

Watched this last night on friend's 70" Elite with Oppo 93 BD player, Marantz AV7005 running B&W speakers. Looked amazing. Sounded amazing. Can't wait for my copy from Amazon to arrive. Buy it and enjoy it. Listen to the 7.1 soundtrack or the original mono. Who cares. Just enjoy the show. This is it. Doubt it will get any better.

It could be a ton better, for example a Sony 4k remaster would blow it away.

So I've gone back and checked this again. I've listened to this moment probably a dozen times. There *has* been *some* effort made to put things right, but it's still very wrong. The explosion *is* correct (has the old pewwww! sound that was missing before), but the gun shots are *way* too loud. And it *does* cover up Brody's last line to the shark. Now, to be fair...it's not *completely* gone like it was in the 5.1 version, but all but. You *really* have to know it's there to hear it, and strain hard to hear it at that. Not at all as clear or audible as on the mono version. I'd say this mix is maybe 20% back to the sensibilities of the mono track as far as sound aesthetics. As I said - some effort was put into it to pull it back from where it was. But it still sucks. I'll definitely be going with the mono track.

it's really the only way to go, for hardcore fans of the movie. If you know the original soundtrack, you're not going to be able to tolerate the 7.1

Oh, sorry. Yeah, it should be the same in other parts of Europe. Not sure which company distributes in Sweden though, buddywhite.

No one knows that for sure. The esteemed Mr. Harris, who's been posting on this thread, would probably say every film is different.
So, no matter how high you or I am on Sony's recent transfers none of that matters in regards too this flick.
Since you usually back me, I'll back you w/it most likely would have turned out diff! wink.gif

Croweyes1121, the important question is: Does the new mix use the same sound elements from the mono track, or does it have newly recorded and retarded sound effects, which plagued half of the movie on DVD?

As has been said MANY times in this thread, it's the latter.

Yes, they're the re-recorded ones - for the most part. They've replaced the whale to the original sound. The explosion at the end has that ricochet sound that was missing on the 5.1 mix, so that sounds right. But the gun shots are still *much* too loud, the sinking ship is from the 5.1, Jaws crashing through the glass at the end from the 5.1, etc. You can tell that *some* effort has been made to put things right and more in keeping with the original audio, but there's still far too many similarities with the 5.1 mix for my taste. I'd advise you to just do a quick toggle between the two options when the disc comes out and decide for yourself. The last line being drowned out by the gun shot in and of itself is a deal breaker for me, personally.

And those damn gunshots are NOT the same.

Great.

I think I read somewhere that the mono track was only for the US but I guess I was mistaken. Gonna order the UK release then.

Don't know if the BB exclusive Digibook edition will be discounted, though: http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Jaws-Blu-ray/48867/ but the Universal Coupon may still count with it.

In Canada , the digibook edition is $10 more. The only real difference being that 44 page booklet, anybody seen that booklet, is it worth the extra $10?

because of the bluray, it was the first time i actually noticed the meteor or UFO or whatever it is in the background at nighttime.

before i never noticed it. but today i did. awesome bluray transfer for most of the time. there are a few scenes that look out of place, unsharp so to speak. maybe out of focus or DNR to heavy i dont know.

that said i am very happy with this release. lots better then the dvd. is it perfect. no. but well worth the money for me.

i just hope Jaws 2 will be released as well. that movie was actually my first experience with Jaws. still have fond memories of that movie too.
