Energy RC-Micro 5.1 vs Energy Take Classic 5.1

It looks like the RC setup is a bit better if only looking at specs. The SW goes down a tad lower, as so the sats. The RC is also slightly larger in terms of drivers.

Your looking at the wrong specs.... The RC-micros have smaller drivers and don't go as low as the takes

What do you mean by saying the RC has "better" specs?

Let me make a quick comparison of the frequency response:

Center channel: RC - 150Hz to 23KHz Take Classic- 110Hz to 20KHz
Satellite: RC - 150Hz to 23KHz Take Classic- 115Hz to 20KHz
Sub: RC - 36Hz to 180Hz Take Classic-33Hz-150Hz


I can't say which one is better because I have never listened and compared them directly. But if the specs are the only indicator, the Take Classic looks better to me. The Take Classic satellite and center speakers cover lower range, so does the Take Classic sub-woofer. They are also little bigger in size too, so they may have an advantage at higher volumes.

I haven't heard them, but I've ready good things about both the Take and Micro packages in the Energy Owners Thread (I own Energy RC-10s). I'd recommend the Energy Take Classic 5.0 package so that you can get a better sub, such as the Energy S10.3.

I recommend skipping both speakers systems and get two or three pair of CB-5's for $99/pr. If you buy 3 pair, use one CB-5 as a center.

This will blow away the Take Classic or RC Micros due their larger size and ability to play down to 80hz. It'll also blend better with the subwoofer.

If you'd rather have the CC-5 as a center you can get it from Vanns. I'm pretty confident they will come down off their $219 price quite a bit.

afrogt is right though. If you can make the jump to the CB-5s, they are a better speaker than the micros and the take fives.

As for your receivers, it would be best to allocate more money towards speakers and sub than a receiver. That's where you will get the most sound benefit. What budget did you have in mind for the receiver? Any requirements?

If Airplay is important, that sort of limits your options; I think it's a fairly new features. One of the best ways to get a good value with a Denon receiver is to look at the previous year's model lines.

Most of Denon's previous year's models don't have airplay (can upgrade 3311). The 1912 or 2112 should work for you. That Marantz 1602 is a nice receiver. I wouldn't be concerned about the 50W/channel plus it has pre-outs for front L/R speakers (and of course the subwoofer).

I wouldn't worry about AirPlay as a deciding factor in an AVR. That is easily remedied with a $99 apple tv2 which would give you much better options than AirPlay alone.

The EW-100 is not a very good sub and there are much better for its price (the S10.3 is much better). Where are you buying your package?

Since I'm guessing this might be your first Denon and sub setup, read through AVS member batpig's guide and other resources (I, II, & III). It will help you to figure out how to use Audyssey to get the most out of your system.

I think the classics are the way to go bud. Love mine on my Yamaha RX-V373 5.1 av reciever!
