While in 2D, the W7000 easily lits my HP even in eco mode, there would IMHO be no way to have a satisfactorily lit picture with 119".

Right now I'm experimenting with smaller picture sizes, and with my new bulb I feel the picture to be well lit at a diagonal size of 90".

It is as cruel as it is...

Probably I will attach a second smaller HP screen to the ceiling at a smaller distance (in addition to the 165"), in order to get the same viewing angle as I have with the more distanced (165" as well) large screen in 2D.

And if I may make a recommendation: don't let yourself be fooled by thinking to allow for a much darker picture in 3D: you will be spoiled by the bright picture in 2D, and thus most certainly be very disappointed by the loss of light (not to 80%, but by 80% to a resulting 20%) in 3D.

EDIT Just for fun I did a calculation: the lux factor (brightness per square) between the 90" and the 165" taking into account the additional difference between full and eco mode results in exactly compensating a light loss of 77%. I was not aware of this before finding the 90" diagonal subjectively as satisfying in brightness terms as is the eco/165" setup with 2D. Funny...

I have used my HP screen with my RS40 and RS55, and it has been acceptable. I won't think I would be bothered too much by the brightness in 3D.

Now that you guys can probably get into the service menu, you also can probably clamp the IRIS down to reduce brightness for whoever needs to as an alternate method to an ND filter.

I believe you can also increase the aggressiveness of the IRIS for those that want darker blacks and aren't too adverse to the bouncy effect.

I read it somewhere from a user review about it being a fix coming mid June. Who knows if its true, I'm just better off with the W7000

Perhaps you are depending on your viewing habits. I am not here to derail the W7000 thread but just to shed light on one of the alternative units. There may be a FW fix in the works from Acer but they are not telling me about it or admitting the issue even exists despite the evidence I provided them. What we do know is BenQ has owned up to and fixed the same issue with their unit, kudos to them. What one must decide is just how big the issue is. I will say that for my viewing, the majority of which is TV and BDs, the issue is very very hard to spot from my normal seating distance. It is so subtle it got by professional reviewers for both units. I can throw up some test material though and easily see it from my seating position. Among that is a Windows desktop from my PC. That is just unsat from a PC manufacturer if you ask me. Choose wisely. I almost bought the W7000 but saved some money and got a pair of glasses with mine. Now that the BQ is fixed if I had it to do over again I would get the BQ. Still happy with the Acer though and will be doing backflips if they ever fix the HDMI blur. It looks that good and everyone says it owns my Epson in PQ. Go figure, that is just DLP pop for you. Don't want to get a DLP LCD war going, just saying that everyone who has seen my 8350 loved it until they see the Acer DLP and then they want no more of the Epson.

Finally got my hands on a W7000 this weekend, upgrading from an LGCF181D.

Unfortunately it's firmware is 1.0, so its off to BenQ support as sharpness is definitely off.

One other thing I noticed right off the bat is that this thing is LOUD. Running in "Eco" mode helps for sure, but the iris whines and screeches like no other I've heard before. Makes me cringe when I pause and fast forward PVR events as I know that the iris will sound off the moment I press the remote.

It's got 2 distince noises: the low pitch whir whir is OK, no problem with that, but the high pitch squeel is bad. Is this normal or do I have a bum unit? The PJ is "shelf mounted" just a few feet from sitting position, so I'm sure that doesn't help.

Will updated firmware fix this...?

Other than that, it's a beauty of a PJ...

I find the same issues with the iris even on 1.03 firmware. The low pitch clicking and grinding doesn't bother me, but the high pitched beeping type sounds are very annoying.

With the iris turned off (dynamic black), the high pitched noises are gone but black levels seem to suffer.

How unfortunate.

I've recently ordered my w7000 which should come with the 1.3 firmware. I also ordered a single set of the new BenQ glasses for $90 CAD. I definitely need another pair, but after zombie's initial review, I don't think i should get another of the BenQ. Has anyone found a place that sells the Acer DLP glasses in Canada? TigerDirect has them on the US site, but not on the canadian site, and there is no way to select canada as a shipping location from the US site.

Seems like the benq glasses are the only easy ones to get here.

The various pixel mapping issues on the different projectors are most likely varying in severity as to how much they affect the image, as well a big difference will be how close someone sits. I can see the difference with a good video source when viewing the Pro8200's pixel issue enough to know how it should look on other DLP's or my JVC (which is as sharp as most cheap DLP's), but I have no idea if the issue is equal to or worse than the Acer. Any videophile is likely going to notice it, but it's not as bad as it sounds either.

I mean given the older LCD's I owned (720p's), a 1080p DLP with the pixel mapping issue is still sharper (at least my VS is). I would assume the Acer is as good or better than the Viewsonic, so not a real big issue, but I personally would not buy the Acer until they fix it given the other options out there.

I would wait until I can finish validating my findings on the BenQ glasses vs the ZD201's. There is a reputable company selling the ZD201's at the same price as the BQ's that ships to Canada.

I know the W7000 is brighter but I think in my setup with a 119in HP screen shelf mounted, I don't think it will be a big deal. To me I only think the $800 difference will play a difference in 3D. Is 3D that much better on the W7000 or will the Optoma ZD201 make 3D easier on the eyes like it does with the W7000. And of course if I choose the Acer, I will wait for a firmware that is supposed to happen in the next 2 weeks or so

The W7000 refurbs on ebay aren't much more than the 9500. The W7000 is nice and sharp after they fixed the 1:1 mapping issue.

Any news on shipment of updated units to AVS?
I've committed to buy a 1.03 unit from AVS, but if AVS is undecided whether or not they will carry them or make them available, please let us know as soon as possible.

Thanks

Here we document the audible noise of the fan and the mechanical iris.

My two options are wait until next year or go seek therapy.
Given that health care is soo expensive I'll probably take the first option.
In the meantime its fun Kumbaying and studying the courageous lessons learned experiences.

I made my self a hushbox, the noise was to much for me.

Now it's running in high lamp mode with the iris on, and the only thing I can hear, is a low fan noise from the four 120mm fans I put in the hushbox.

Looks good. Can you post more details? Seating distance, hush box construction? I guess I'll be building one since I like this PJ a lot and want to keep it...

Now hoping the new BenQ 3D glasses perform well since the ZD201's seem to be slightly smaller in frame, especially when wearing prescription glasses like I sometimes do (prefer lighter frame, bigger lens).

Check with Mark or Mike. AVS is selling the updated W7000's and should have them by now.

check a few posts back for my comments, the new BQ's are not performing the same as the ZD201's. I still have to validate my findings, but they do not appear to block the red flash as well as the ZD201's from what I've seen so far. This may or may not bother someone depending on how sensitive they are to it. The 201's are perfect with the W7000.

Check the link in my signature, I posted some thoughts on the various DLP Link glasses that are out there, there is at least 1 well performing, low cost alternative to the BQ's (with largers lenses than the ZD201's)

regarding fan noise - it's a 300 watt lamp and this projectors can crank out 1500 D65 lumens. It's going to make some noise in high lamp. The fan noise is about the same as the Epson 5010 in it's torch mode.

I've seen 3 W7000's, there is some some sample variance with the iris noise. the one I have now doesn't bother me but can hear it on occasion (it's sitting ~ 2ft behind by head)

I check with them about daily (probably annoying the heck out of them...)
I try to do it in different venues (email, PM, on the forum), just to change it up a bit, trying to avoid the obvious comparison to a 6 year old on a long car trip (Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?...)

Surprisingly, my latest communication from Mike on Friday stated that they still did not have any updated units.

Mike and I were just discussing how to check the firmware in the menu so their shipping folks can verify before it ships. my guess is it should be this week.

You don't hear an intrusive high pitched sound coming from the iris every now and then?

The low pitched grinding and clicking noises don't bother me, seems like every other iris I've heard.

I'll listen more closely next time I have the W7000 hooked up later this week. Right now i'm testing the RS55 with the new Darby video processor.

Here's my quick take of the iris when I viewed the W7000.

When there were major changes in brightness between light and dark scenes, you could hear the iris aggressively click during this change. This type of noise actually doesn't bother me.

It's the scenes where the iris is doing a minor adjustment that you can hear this annoying high pitched 'beep' noise.

The high pitched noise reminds me of cranking up the volume to 100% on a computer with on-board audio and hearing the 'digital' sounds through a pair of headphones.

This is the only thing I have right now.

My seating distance is 10' from a 110" wide 2.00:1 1.0 gain screen, the PJ is mounted 6½' behind the seating.

I'll likely update the mini-shootout thread with my findings. I posted some early impressions of it in the VP forum.

I'm going to try it with the W7000 in 3D mode this week.

My apologies if this has already been covered, I've read most of this thread but I couldn't find anything definitive one way or the other. I just picked up a refurb W7000, and was adamant that the unit I received was the latest firmware. I'm seeing a lot of posts about 1.3 on here, vs 1.03 (mine). Can I assume that people are omitting the .0, and 1.03 is the latest version?

^^^ correct, it's 1.03. If you have that version, your in good shape.

Where did you pick up your refurb unit at?

So what's the RMA process and where do I go. I bought a W7000 in December and the split screen start-up is happening on every power-up. I only use this for movies and have about 150 hours on the bulb. Do they update my old one or send me a referb?
It would also be helpful if Zombie can measure native contrast and dynamic contrast.
