I'm going to play with it some more today to try and get it dialed in. Im just not convinced im getting the best image. Maybe I should get it calibrated, has anyone had a full pro calibration done?
mattr6,
Did you get the tru depth glasses yet or are you waiting for ZD-201's. I'm not 100% sure but if you do get it pro calibrated it's best to have the same 3D glasses for eveyone. This way everyone sees the same PQ after calibration. Need to zombie10k if this is the case when using different 3D glasses after calibration.

I got a pair of the true depths and so far the 3D looks great. It's just that overall it's just off a little. I guess I'm expecting the 2D to be razor sharp but can't fully get it there yet

Hey mattr6, is it just the satellite that's not razor sharp or is it blu-ray as well? If Blu-ray looks great then it's as tigerfan33 said, it's the source not the W7000. I know with Bell satellite HD is not true HD. The satellite can't carry the full bandwidth (I think that's the proper term) so some HD content is not as good as other content. The HD is compressed. I am also pretty sure, Bell anyhow, that none of the HD is really truly real HD.

I have the Ultra Clear glasses and they don't work very well. They can't stay synced for more than a minute. 3D looks great but way to annoying with these glasses. My ZD201 should be here soon. Hopefully they work better. I also ordered the True Depth glasses.

I've decided this is the projector for me. I'm ready to buy now, so I PM'd AV Science sales to see if they have any and how much? Hope to hear back from someone soon, so I can order. smile.gif Wish I had it today because my new Panasonic plasma just bit the dust. I went downstairs to watch foodball on my old Sharp projector with the old lamp, and boy does it suck. I can't wait to get this new projector. smile.gif

So I'm agonising over choosing a projector here in New Zealand. Help me please!
My plans: 140" inch 1.26 gain screen in library/theater that can be fully darkened for movies but will also be used for lots of sports watching with some ambient light.

I LOVE dlp sharpness but plan on getting a darbee as well.

Anyway, I can't decide between benq w7000, epson 5020, or Panny ae8000. I'm leaning toward w7000 because of sharpness, brightness, 3d.

BUT I want to know what the last word in black level for the w7000 is. Is it vastly worse than the epson? Are black bars above 1:2.4 stuff really noticeable?

Note: here in New Zealand the benq is $2000 cheaper than the 5010 or ae8000!

Help! Benq or epson with darbee?

Ok, so it goes like this.

W7000 - Wow look at that 3D, that is amazing. Gee those blacks could be a bit blacker in 2D.

Depends what you consider most important, blacks or 3D. In the end I don't think sharpness is the final decider for most. In owning the W7000 for a month now, I have been through the wow periods of 3D and the disappointment's of the blacks. Zombie as 2 projectors, lol. I have really tried to tweak the blacks, but they will never match the JVC.

If the W7000 is $2000 chepaer and you want the best of both worlds, you could buy a second hand JVC for 2D as well as the W7000.

Blacks will look much better on the Epson. For sports, the BenQ will rule.

I love the Epson because you get no rainbows. Rainbows and all the DLP has a very nice looking image, not that the Epson won't look nice but DLP does have a certain look.

Sharpness is only as good as the source, see my post above. And remember, the bigger the screen the more the lower quality source stuff will be noticeable.

You have to ask yourself what's most important for you.............

$2000 cheaper, do as j2037 says. Maybe a refurbished Epson 8700Ub?
Damn this decision is clearly impossible. Definitely going to wait for Epsom 5020 and see if with darbee it is sharp enough. Or .... I really have no idea.
Anyone know where I can see some good screenshots of the w7000 black levels?
On projectorreviews.com the one side by side they have with it and the 5010 make the blacks look almost identical. I could easily live with them if that's a true representation of them.

I'll try and get some screen shots tonight. I'll try and take one with the W7000 and then the 8500Ub for comparison. But you have to remember, my 8500Ub bulb is dimming. It has close to 2000 hours on it.

I know, I went by what projector reviews said as well. The blacks are better than the 8350 but not nearly as good as the 8500Ub.
the W7000's blacks may not same to the 8500UB, but there are few more things better than the 8500UB, such the brightness, sharpness...etc..........Looking forward to your screenshots smile.gif

W7000 black levels are also affected by your room wall & ceiling color. You can view sample 2D screenshots in my theater build thread (see sig) to get idea. My walls & ceiling are light colored so it hurts the black levels. I notice that during scenes that are sun lit, the black levels suffer. But in dark scenes, the black levels are better but not inky black. I have not done a side-by-side with a more recent Epson to compare.

The reason I chose the W7000 was for the brightness and sharpness (also paired with Darbee ). I want it all at this price point but since I can't I prioritized brightness and sharpness over best black levels.

I don't care for 3D but many folks seem to love the W7K for 3D so that may factor in to your decision as well.

Edit - my screenshots are before Darbee. I don't have Darbee shots but as it's been discussed on other threads, the Darbee takes the image to another level in terms of pop and perceived sharpness. Black level with Darbee is not dramatically different to my eyes.

Brightness and sharpness are all true when talking about the W7000. I use the W7000 for watching television with ambient light. The projector is a light canon, IMHO, and I actually have to drop it into eco lamp mode because it's light is overpowering on my eyeballs...and that's on a 153" screen. I really do love the DLP look.

What are some really good scene's for testing black levels? Some pointers so I don't spend hours going through material trying to get the perfect scene for comparison. Thanks.

Any of the Harry Potter movies (especially 4 onwards), Game of Thrones, Thor, Green Lantern, new Star Wars (ep II or ep III), some Batmans have some scenes, Underworld movies, Tree of Life (at 18 minutes), etc...
definitely Underworld biggrin.gif or some cosmos/space scenes

Green Lantern and Thor both have tons of deep space with lot of colorful stuff going on.
Cool, I've got the Harry potters and Thor, Tree of life. Tron Legacy any good? which scene do you think? I'll charge up my camera and try a video also.
The animation "How to Train Your Dragon" will either piss you off or you'll love the scenes depending on the projector. Low CR projectors will have a heck off a time displaying this movie. The sheep as well as the grass and background should be easily discernible at the beginning of the movie..no hazing.
Ok, I'll go look through some blu-ray's now and will wait till dark to do the pictures and quick video. Hopefully have them posted before midnight.

Off topic..are you a Optima fan? Noticed your avatar.

I bought it in May and so far it's been a really decent car. It's big (roomy), handles well and I get around 850 Km (just over 520 Miles) per tank. That's highway mileage and I drive just under 120 Kmph (just under 75 Mph).

I just hope the Kia can last for 300 000Km (186 000 miles) or 9 years.

Yeah me too, I agree. That's great mileage for a non-hybrid. Must be the 2.4 liter GDI? I have a Kia Optima Hybrid..love the car! I'm partial anyways as I work on these cars nearly everyday lol.
I work for KIA at the West point , Ga plant.smile.gif
post #2424 of 3452
Yep, 2.4 liter GDI. The Canadian cars are all built in Korea. Too bad because then I could blame you for that rattle in my drivers side door tongue.gif

Benq W7000 and here is a picture from The Dark Knight and Kung Fu Panda. Camera was in auto mode when I took the pictures last night. One more which was taken in daylight between the Giants and Cowboys. The last picture is my family room the screen is 110" and throw is 16' on my Black Widow painted on to the wall. I'm still waiting for zombie10k review of the Epson 5020 before I decide which one I'll get.

just let me say that you guys are extremely helpful. those screenshots are awesome. keep them coming if possible. I think i could live with the blacks, especially in scenes with lots of bright and dark contrast. I will also paint my walls and ceiling dark to help.

another question: anyone watching 3D on an especially large screen? 130-150"

some reviews say the w7000 is not bright enough in 3D for such a large screen, others say it is. Who's right?

and on those huge screens, the w7000 is still SHARP in 2D?
Quick question for the group. Does anyone here have to focus the projector after a bit of use? It seems like my projector gets slightly unfocused after about a day or two of use. Is this normal? I do have a lot of bass going through the room, but wouldn't think it would make that much difference. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks
I've watched some 3D on my 153" and it's fine. 3D could always use a bit more lumens but hey, it's a 153" screen. I just can't watch a full movie because my Ultra Clear glasses can't stay synced for more than a minute arghhhhh. So my preliminary tests are that it's watchable. I just ordered True Depth and still waiting for my Optima ZD201.

Looking good jsil.
great stuff. I'm not huge on 3D yet, because I've never had a 3D display, but I can only imagine avatar or transformers dark of the moon on a 140+ screen blowing my mind apart. I might go 130 just to get a few extra lumens. decisions decisions.

anyone regretted getting too large a screen? to small?
