I finally had a play with the iris settings in the service menu yesterday. Nice that we can tame brightness, but I do wish the steps were a bit more gradual. I would say each noticeable step down in brightness when turning down the iris is equal to ~5 clicks of the JVC iris. Not a big deal and I am not complaining since I am glad we can tame the brightness period, but it would be nice if the steps were a little less severe. I was able to get the two projectors VERY close though luckily so now both are about the same output which is great. Before this tweak, the 7000 was actually TOO bright on my screen in 2d, but it should be much better now.

Hey Tom, I did notice ringing on my 2 7000s, but the sharpness was at +2 and once I turned that down the ringing went away. I know you mentioned already turning down the sharpness, so not sure what is going on with your unit.

That is good to know, thanks! I had this set wrong.

Hey gang,

Anyone have any good picture settings to use with the 3D mode? I find that I have to boost the Color way up to get an image that is not dull.
I am using the True Depth glasses and the 3D effect is excellent but the picture just looks a bit muted.

Thanks Toe.smile.gif

I hope it's just a bad unit. It sounds like my issue is out of the ordinary. Unless I'm doing something wrong with my picture setting to cause this.

I need to turn down the brightness in the service menu as well. Even with a ND filter the picture is far too bright for me.

There's a guy selling a used 7000 for 1k. I e-mailed him to find out if his has this ringing with sharpness at zero. Hopefully it will be like yours. The money saved could be put towards a conversion lens for it.

Did you try adjusting gamma? You lose some shadow detail but I find the picture more vibrant.

Thanks ms73..I will give that a shot as well. Is everyone else keeping their color settings the same for 3D mode?
This ringing issue is very weird. When I get close to the screen, using a paused image, the ringing isn't noticeable at first. If I stare at the edge of an object it only becomes visible after a few seconds. It's also vsible on the letterbox bars. Could this have something to do with the color wheel? This is my first DLP.

let me know some scenes in various movies that you're seeing it in, I can take screenshots to show you what mine looks like.
I notice it on all BD's that I know don't have EE when using my JVC.. Where the screen image meets the black "letterbox" bars shows the ringing, especially if the image is white. On the Kung Fu Panda 2D disc, at 55:40/55:41 there is a rock formation towards the right side of the screen that has a hole in it. The inner edges of that hole shows the ringing after a few seconds of staring at it. Pretty much any object against a white or light background stands out. I just checked out despicable me 2d.

A little after the 14 minute point on despicable me, I can really see the ringing around the heavy bag his mother is practicing matial arts on. It's VERY easy to see by the screen after focusing on it for just a few seconds. This scene is better than the kung fu panda example.

as of two days ago, my unit has developed a flicker. It doesnt happen all the time, but when it does, its quite noticeable. There's only 120 hours on the bulb, running in economy mode. Is this just the result of a bad bulb or can an issue with the projector itself that can cause this?
I just got my unit yesterday and it's already up and running. It has a beautiful picture and I tried the 3d it's awesome. I'm a little upset because my unit came with firmware 1.00 and it was manufactured in nov 2012. I guess I'll have to ship my unit to Benq. I'll be very thankful if any AVSforum member are willing to send me some tips to how improve black level for this unit. Feel free to PM if more convenient.

It's fine. New units have firmware 1.00 and are apparently slightly different than old units (which need firmware 1.03). They are believed to be W7000+ models relabeled W7000.

Might try switching to normal/high lamp. If it's the lamp, sometimes that will clear up the flicker.

thank you for the suggestion. I'll try that tonight for sure. So far I've tried to replace the hdmi cables and reset the blu-ray player.

Anyone else have this ringing issue on their 7000?

okay i did exactly this tonight. I tried it with 'trouble with a curve' and initially, in low lamp mode, the projector started out fine, but within 45 minutes the flicker became very noticeable. So then I changed it to normal mode and the flickering went away, and stayed away for the remainder of the movie. So.... what's that mean? a busted oem bulb? after 150 hours? We have only ever used it for about 4 hours a week or so (2 movies/week) for the past 6 months. So do I have to basically leave it on normal mode or get a new bulb to go back to economy?

anyway thank you at least for helping me diagnose the problem.

Just leave it in normal mode for a while. A lot of the time it will correct itself and you can go back to low lamp.

How long should I leave it in normal mode, would you say?

was I supposed to leave the lamp in 'normal' mode for the first 100 hours or something before switching to ecocomy? As soon as I received the unit, I set it to economy... because normal was just too bright and economy looked better, but should I not have done that and caused this situation somehow? or is it just a funky bulb

Hard to say. I'd try 20hrs or something and see. No, normally it's not a problem, but I had one projector do this and I've read that same suggestion on these forums before.
I got 15hrs on my w7000 so far and I'm really impressed with the picture quality. The "blacks" are very good, and after a few "tweaks" (I don't have calibration equipment) I'm very happy overall besides a couple glitches. The first one is the dynamic black on 3d is always off, when I switch to 3d movie mode. If I access the service menu I can turn it back on, but it's kind annoying that the unit doesn't store my preference. The second glitch is when I'm in my couch, I believe to build static electricity on my body somehow, and as I soon as I get close to the projector, I lose input signal but it returns as I go back to my couch. If someone have ideas how to remedy that, pls let me know. Besides that I'm really loving the unit.

Can see pics at projectorreviews.com. Is pretty accurate with look, but is actually better as firmware improved since that review. Due to washout I only watch sports at night. (can use dynamic mode, the brightest in day, but off some colorwise, though bigboys here have calibrated it). But projector is without question excellent for sports. Can up frame interpolation (FI) for smoother action.

Agree with others since this is not motion associated with a high FI (frame interpolation) which you could check, more likely sharpness controls. Since you have off, perplexing. Could try a total reset just in case something is locked into these controls even if the numbers say nothing is on.

Sadly, my DI at 900 hours has been going. Mine has always squeaked some, which hasn't bothered me with sound system on even with me sitting next to it. What's interesting is it suddenly goes darker than should and will still pop to bright on the brighter scenes. Thanks to coderguy's bravery of adjusting the service menu, I have gone in and just reset the dynamic iris with it still on and all is fine. So appears to be related to use as the recent couple of times was after about 5 hours of use. But if heat related, resetting shouldn't work, one would think, as resetting appears to be software related.

Have only two months left in the short 1 year warranty, but am wary of replacing as I seen many still have trouble with new units with noisy and faulty DI's. And as some have noted although a little richer and darker with the DI on, still not a huge change with the DI off. And, since I did not calibrate like the bigboys here, interestingly the DI off has more natural colors for my unit. So bottom line is DI still holding and can reset it successfully in the service menu. We shall see what happens in near future. It did make it through the insanely long and dark director's cut of Das Boot (3.5 hrs), so I will try to keep my use under about 5 hours at a time.

Also to note for new users, if you want a darker picture, the bulb darkens after about 100 hours and cinema mode has the lowest output. I have not tried coderguy's recs for manual DI thru the service menu, as he has warned have to careful or can 'brick' the projector. But may try if the DI fully goes and cannot be reset.

My replacement from Amazon arrived yesterday. I'm THRILLED to say that this unit has no ringing.smile.gif Focus is far better as well. I only wish avs sold this so I could have it caiibrated by Jason, frown.gif Green and red are too over satuated so I just turned down the color. Before doing so, guys looked like they were wearing bright red lipstick..

My True Depth glasses will be coming Thursday. Do these have to be charged before using. If yes, how long do they take to charge?

Thanks,
Tom

Good news, it is very obvious to me that there is a QC issue with the lens assembly on the Benqs. I saw a Benq w6000 at the store which didn't have nearly as perfect focus uniformity as mine does, so yes you have to be careful. The projector should look pretty darn close to as sharp as an LCD monitor if you get a perfect unit, though there is still a tiny bit of ringing around text if you sit close enough, other than that though in video this is the sharpest projector I've ever owned.

Tom, that's good news about getting a quality sample. You can charge the glasses for about 1-2 hours for a quick charge that will get you through your first 3D movie.

benQ released a new pair of DLP link glasses i'm going to try when they are available.

+1 to Zombie's post...I also am using the TrueDepth and just charged them for about an hour before watching Avatar 3D....the glasses work great! Even my wife was blown away!!!
Just a note on the glasses....if the 3D looks blurry, just click the ON button and that will 'reverse' the lenses...this is also in the instructions that I did not read since I was too excited to watch 3D!!!

I am still wanting to get more colors out of the 3D picture behind the glasses....anyone have any tips on getting a great 3D picture with glasses on?
