macbook air 5.1 output minidisplay port to hdmi discovery

There are plenty of threads with sound problems connecting macs with mini display port to hdmi. When connecting my 2011 air I have been able to consistently get stereo sound with the Kanex, Moshi, and the 10$ amazon cable. I have been using makemkv and preserving the 5.1 options, but when connecting to my panasonic vt30 then the optical out to my Integra dtr 8.4 (with no hdmi) I can not get the receiver to play any DD or DTS. In my other room i have a Onkyo tx-sr604 with hdmi. Now when I connect the air directly to the receiver with the mini display-hdmi and hdmi out to the tv I get dts 5.1.

My xbox, playstation, and basic cable all output DD with no problem on the Integra. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

If you connect HDMI to your TV and then output optical out, you will only get stereo, all TVs are like that AFAIK.

It's a security "feature" that's supposed to prevent piracy (not sure how, but that's how things are). Nothing you can do.

Both of my TVs are like that. My Philips will output Dolby Digital via its coax output, but only using it's built-in TV tuner, which doesn't involve HDMI.
