Polk Audio Tower Speaker (RTi12) setup advice

Hi everyone,

I would like to thank you for the great work here on AVS Forum, I been here quite often for help but never asked for a question in till today because most of my questions are already answered in most forum topics here.

I have a noob question on buying an audio system, I currently own Samsung U55D8000 series TV. I could get two Polk Audio Tower Speaker (RTi12) for pretty cheap price, I was wondering if I also need to buy a receiver or amp? and what is the difference between buying these tower speakers rather than 7.1 surround sound system?

Yes you need an a receiver.

The difference between 2 speakers and 7.1 surround? 5 speakers and a sub.

However, you can use a different brand for surrounds if needed - And you do not
need to match the sub brand.

Thank you, based on my research I found out that these speakers need a good receiver with lot of power, what do you think is a good receiver that would compliment these speakers under $500 ? Also I read a lot about Bi-Amping or Bi-Wiring, and can't seem to figuring out if I should have these speakers in bi-wiring or bi-amping?

Does your TV have analog (RCA) output jacks to connect an amplifier? Some models do not.

I personally am a believer in quality over quantity. A good stereo amplifier and 2 quality speakers is my choice. Spread the money around on 5 channels and you get much lower quality sound. Quality trumps quantity any time, in my book.

My recommendation to any friend of mine would be to go to Audio Advisor and get a Cambridge Audio 650A integrated amplifier for $499 (was $799; great deal) and a pair of tower speakers for about the same price. The Monitor Audio M4 speakers are excellent for $500 per pair and their M6 is even better for $650 per pair. They will sound better than anything Polk makes at any price.

The Polks are not too bad if that is all you can afford now, but you will probably get tired of them and what something that sounds better in the future. What is the price you can get them for?

If your TV has only a digital or HDMI sound output, you might as well get an HT receiver. An Onkyo TX-NR609 would be a good choice if that is where you need to go.

Are you in the US or Canada?

If the US, check out some of the Marantz receviers like the 5005 or 5006.

Right now I got these two pairs of Polk for about $700, however I don't want to return these, they were such a hassle to bring home due to their weight 88 lbs!

Well I think my TV has RCA output jack, however I know it does have Optical Digital Audio Output. Should I just get a amp and connect it to my TV with Optical Digital Audio Output or by RCA? Which one has better quality RCA or Optical Digital Audio Output? and is this even possible

Yes I am looking to go with Onkyo NR709, however I am not sure if the 3D output is good, I heard some issues with 3D on this receiver.
