If anyone has any suggestions place throw them out there. The design is still fluid right now but this saturday I might be breaking ground and starting some framing!

Let's talk about sound management. If you are starting to frame then spend the extra $100-200 or so and isolate the wall framing from the ceiling joists. That way the sound/wall vibration from the subs will have a more difficult time making it upstairs to disturb your significant others.

Plan for clips and channel on the ceiling and double drywall with green glue all around. Having done it I can tell you that it will contain the theater rumble.

I hate stairwells. They keep me up at night. I would be careful about using that space under the stairs for equipment. Convenient but the biggest conductor of sound up and out of that room.

It would be pretty easy/cheap to treat all the surfaces under the stairway as you would the theater.

Well, yes and no. You have to frame a cube or rectangle, then apply clips and channels to all these surfaces, insulate and then apply double drywall. Pretty tight quarters become even tighter.

Also hard to get competent ventilation in there without compromizing what was just built.

Can and is certainly done, but it's not as straightforward as the walls, and you wind up with a surprisingly smaller space, making it maybe less than worthwhile.

Actually I don't see any opening from the theater to the under stairs equipment rack. If he were to add clips and channel to that stairwell wall and the nook for the sub-woofer he should be pretty good. The other walls I would rip down and rebuild with the same materials only 3/4 of an inch shorter and with clips, The reason I wouldn't rip the stair wall down is I bet it is secured to the stair stringers and gives the stairs a lot of rigidity, But you could stagger stud that wall as an alternative by popping in some additional studs sticking out an inch.

You can't rip the stair wall down, surely. I agree.

Converting the single wall to staggered would be less efficient than removing the drywall and attaching clips and channels. Best would be to have an independent 2x4 wall in front of that stairwell wall.

But as my pal Mick says, you can't always get what you want.

Why does a stairwell keep you up? What noise does a rack produce?

This was an old design that my installer did. I redid it myself and the new drawings are in the post.

Haha yea only took a few hours to demo the basemet! Putting it up won't be as fast... I'm going to try and frame in the theater this weekend so I can get my electrician in to wire everything that I need added.

I get why you would stagger studs in a theater but for an equipment room?! Am I missing something?

And my new design doesn't put a sub under the stairs. I don't like that option. The installer was trying to save my room depth.

Do you have a link to where to buy clips?

What do you mean by channel on the sealing?

Whisper clips and hat channel essentially mounts the ceiling drywall on "springs" keeping the sound from making it's way upstairs.

He also has clips for anchoring the top plate of the walls.

A rack area under the stairs isn't in and of itself a problem. As pointed out, the racked equipment doesn't create noise. I have a rack under the stairs also, but the air space under the stairs is NOT open to the theater. I access the equipment from a little lobby before I enter the theater. So not a problem.

Often we see designs where the back theater wall is the stairwell wall and there's a planned large opening in that wall for a rack. This obviously allows sound to directly vibrate the stairwell framing. That's what keeps me up nights...

That makes a lot more sense now, thanks for clarifying. Im makign sure to keep the theater separate from the equipment closet.

Wow, that's efficient use of space. And per Big's earlier comment, that sort of space under the stairs is clean and easy to decouple and drywall. Not as straightforward (to me, anyway) when going through the side walls of the stairwell.

And I also got a small storage space under the stair case, so no space is wasted. I didn't do clips and hat channels under the stair case, the space is too tight, but I do have double 5/8" drywall and green glue in between, since that space is off the main side wall, sound waves will not direct hit that space especially, the side wall will be treated so I think I can get away without using decoupled wall there.

Im going to do the same thing walk, but only on one side. the other will be enclosed for the back wall of my theater. Im opening the other side so it makes the basement feel more open when you walk down. And will allow you to see my, in theory, awesome bar that will go there!
