Using Polk Monitor 70s with a Pioneer VSX 1021 receiver

Hi
I'm looking to just get started with a home audio component system. I've been thinking of getting two Polk Audio Monitor 70 speakers, a Polk PSW10 sub-woofer and a Pioneer VSX 1021 receiver.
My question is, will I be able to set up the receiver to just use 2 speakers? Will I face any problem if I am watching a DVD with more channels if I have only 2 speakers?

It'd be great if anyone with the same receiver could let me know if the receiver allows you to use such a setup. I thought that this would be a decent setup to start out with and to gradually add speakers when I can.

Do not and everybody is going to say this is do not get the polk sub, the monitor 70's will do just fine without that sub. you would need to save up for a much better sub
right now new egg has the 70's on sale for $150 each.


And you will not have a problem with the setup with just two speakers.

It sounds like since you're just running a two channel set up anyway, you'll get a decent amount of power to your 70's with two channels driven.

no need to bi-amp/bi-wire the Monitor70's, they will perform extremely well with the binding posts jumpered (as shipped from Polk) and a single two conductor speaker wire.

What do you mean "binding posts jumpered" I just got my Pioneer VSX-1021-K, monitor70's with the CS2 center from Newegg from the sale. I just set up the 70s but don't know what that means. This is my first home theater set up attempt.

The monitor 70s by themselves have more bass than the PSW10.... Polk PSW505 would be a higher level and light years better

Agreed. Stay away from the PSW10. It would be a waste. Look, too, at the BIC F12 now that the PSW505 has become harder to find at a near $200 price.

What he meant was, on the back of the speaker where you hook up the speaker wire, there are four terminals, the pos (red) and the neg (black) are each connected to one another via a little gold bracket looking thing called a jumper.

You could essentially remove the jumpers and separate power to the speaker. So don't even worry about that for now, just hook it up and enjoy. You can hook up to either set of terminals, top or bottom, it doesn't matter as long as the jumpers are in place.

I have a VSX-1021 hooked up to just 2 speakers and a sub at the moment.
Set the sound mode to stereo and it will be just fine - page 35 of the manual has more details on setting other surround modes with only 2 speakers.
I have it set up with Polk R50's and a big sub (Cerwin Vega CLCS-15)
Without the sub the 50's have more bass than I was expecting.

If you insist to run bi-amp, just remove the binding-posts in the back of the Monitor70; and your Pioneer 1021-k has the option to take the surround channels to run bi-amp (the surround channels will be available on a 2 speakers set up)
