SONY 50XBR800 powers down intermittently

Hi,

My SONY 50XBR800 is about 9 years old. Recently the lamp went out and I replaced it with one from Amazon.
Everything was fine for a few weeks, then the problem started. The TV powers downs for about 30 seconds every 10-15 minutes. The standby light blinks a few times, then the picture comes back on and the picture is fine.

I thought it might be the lamp, so I ordered a new one from DLP Lamp Source. However, when I inserted the new lamp, the set does not turn on. The standby light blinks, the new lamp makes a static sound every minute or so, nothing else happens. DLP Lamp Source immediately replaced the lamp, but the same thing happened with the replacement. BTW, DLP Lamp Source is excellent.

Any ideas what is going on? The two lamps have totally different symptoms.

Thanks in advance,
Paul

Hi Paul. My money is on that it's the lamp ballast driver board (part# 4422 336 02243). It can be found for about $30-$60 depending on the vendor.

Both of the lamps you have are fine. The reason as to why the older one works intermittently, and the new one won't power up at all, is solely due to a defective ballast. The "static noise" you hear with the new lamp is the ballast's repeated attempt to ignite the arc. It's not kicking out enough initial voltage (about 5kV) for successful ignition.

And even if it did, the lamp would eventually fizzle then restart just like the older one...which is very abusive to lamp life BTW.

Thanks, so much for the reply. I hadn't check the forum in a few days!!

Is this an easy repair, to replace the ballast board?

Thanks,
Paul

You're welcome Paul. Yes, replacing the ballast board is not that difficult at all.

Just be careful in there. Unplug the TV and let it sit awhile before cracking it open.

I also need a 4422 336 02243 p lamp driver, but unable to find one. Is there a replacement part available?
