Possibly really dumb idea... fixed screen on a hinged board

OK, I'm in the early stages of a man cave type of project. It's going to be in a bedroom that I will have approval (from the wife ) to make a lot of changes to, including blocking out light from the windows.

I want to have projector and the largest screen that I can fit in the room (I'm going to be limited due to the room dimensions), plus a flat panel TV that the kids can mostly use for the XBox 360 and Wii (to minimize on the hours put on the projector bulb).

So... one idea is to put the flat panel on a side wall. That is my backup plan.

What I thought would be cool would be to come up with a way to have the flat panel on the wall that my projector screen will cover up, and then have the ability to swing the projector screen up and out of the way near the ceiling until I want to use the screen, and then I could swing it back down. Sort of the same concept as one of those Murphy Beds, that swing up into a box and then you pull it down when you're ready to sleep on it.

I can conceptualize how it would work, and I know that there are a variety of hinges to choose from, and via spring-loaded mechanisms or counterweights, I figure it wouldn't be a very tedious thing to swing the screen up or down.

So... is that a dumb idea? I was hoping to avoid getting a retractable screen after pricing those out (tab tensioned ones are pretty costly!).

Would a fixed screen that is stored in an orientation parallel to the floor be damaged over time simply by gravity pulling down on it?

That is taking my idea to an extremely elaborate level! My budget (and ceiling) wouldn't be able to handle that, but I like it...

Yes, that would be more apt to fit my budget and my ceiling. Thanks for the link! Looks great.

I'm considering building a box around the frame and potentially making the backside of the screen blend into the ceiling, and maybe adding some crown molding around the box, so that when it's in the "UP" position, it would look more like it's part of the ceiling. Not sure how complex that would make it. I'd probably make that part of "phase 2".

Please pursue your last idea. Cosmetic approaches to getting "The Big Picture" always impart valuable information and ideas.
