Plasma TV and ONKYO SS but Netflix doesn't use Surround Sound??

I have a LG Plasma TV 60PZ950 along with a AVX-280 ONKYO Surround Sound Home Theater system. All connected via HDMI I am able to have the surround sound work flawlessly using the TV (FIOS) through the ONKYO as well as the PS3 HDMI but when I try to use the Netflix from the TV (SMARTTV) the surround sound won't work. I am sure I am missing something but what can it be or how should I connect it to work? Thanks

Depends on the Netflix content. Is it 5.1? Stereo? If stereo, you can use a surround mode like PLII in the Onkyo to give a surround effect.

Netflix does not support 5.1 audio on all platforms. It depends on the vendor. Even then, some titles have 5.1 soundtracks, but most do not.

Yes, the PS3 supports 5.1 audio from Netflix. Apparently your TV does not. I have an Apple TV2 that does Netflix 5.1 while my Roku box does not.

When I searched the specs for my tv it mentions The digital audio output provides 5.1 channel stereo audio. You can hook up any DLNA product, including your Blu-ray player with an HDMI cable or by way of the on-board wireless connection. Doesn't this mean I should have the 5.1 coming out of the tv? If so then how should it connect to my HTIB to support SS? Thanks

No, that isn't what it means, although i don't understand what you mean by "provides. 5.1 channel stereo audio". 5.1 channel and stereo are two different things.

Most TVs with digital audio outputs will send DD 5.1 on programs matching two conditions: (1) the program is acquired by the TV using the set's internal tuner or via its own Internet apps and (2) the program has a DD 5.1 soundtrack. Netflix matches the first condition, but not necessarily the second one. You should be able to determine whether your Netflix app is sending DD 5.1 by looking at your TV's audio input display. See p44 of the manual. You can also post in the owner's thread for your TV. Other owners have likely made that determination. As I said earlier, some Netflix apps support 5.1 while others do not.

Netflix app do you mean the actually movie or Netflix itself? I don't see it on page 44 but what should I look for on my tv? Thanks I was hoping to use the smart tv for Netflix but since the ps3 Netflix works w surround I guess the tv is out of the question for Netflix. Thanks for your assistance.

Both, actually. The Netflix app itself needs to support 5.1 and the movie needs to be in 5.1 Most are not on Netflix streaming.

p44 of the online pdf manual shows a TV display with all of the video and audio attributes of the currently playing program.

Seems like a good plan.

I went to the LG site and looked up your TV. There was a tab with a link to the pdf manual.

I see what you mean regarding video/audio attributes. What should I look for?

Does the source have a DD or DD+ audio track.

I will check. I also notice the surround sound doesn't work if I plug a .mkv file directly into my TV. Say it is D or D+ what would that mean for me?

Thanks

It just tells you the source format. If the Netflix app on your TV is not DD 5.1 or DD+, then it doesn't matter what your TV outputs because the best you can get is stereo at that point.

Netflix is only 5.1

Netflix streams in Dolby Digital Plus if your device supports it. I've been watching old episodes of Breaking Bad and Hell on Wheels on my Panasonic BD-220 this week. My first generation Roku only streams in stereo but the Panasonic will do DD+.

I'm new at this so please bear with me. When you say that you don't get surround sound, what do you get?

Don't you need to run a digital optical back from the tv to the receiver because the netflix is not running through the receiver; it's just in the TV?
