Help needed with AppleTV and dual zones

Only analog sources can be played through zone two, so splitting the HDMI output and using an analog converter may work if you don't encounter any HDCP errors.

You could also use an optical-analog converter such as this one from Gefen. I have used several of those with distributed audio systems and they are great.

Monoprice has a similar (& cheaper) product, but the specs say it works with stereo PCM signals only. I believe you can set AppleTV to output stereo by turning off Dolby Digital but this would of course leave you without surround sound in the main zone.

I can attest that audio playback via hdmi and optical is available simultaneous. In the settings menu, set audio to auto for 2 channel when needed.

I have the same problem

I just purchased appleTV and was disappointed when the only connection is HDMI (no RCA cables). I have a real nice devon receiver but it is about 3 years old and doesn't connect to the wifi. When I connected HDMI it worked fine in my "home Theater" but then i want to use zone 2 from the Denon so I can send the music from iTunes anywhere in the house. the problem is that zone two out put is RCA to my whole house audio amp. Since HDMI is coming into the receiver it will not out put stereo to the amp. has anyone else had this problem and if so, was there a cure? Obivously I could connect my iPad/iphone directly to the whole house audio amp via ear phone jack. But that defeats the whole purpose of using remote on my iPhone to control AppleTV.

Works great. I have it playing in zone 1 via HDMI and zone 2 from the convertor to wireless speakers in the next room.

I'm running my Apple TV to my Main Zone via HDMI and I'd like to run my Zone 2 via Optical Cable/Analog Converter.

When I turn my Zone 2 On, and put the Source to DVR (what I have my Apple TV plugged into), I'm not getting audio to my Zone 2.

Is there anyway to do this? I'd like to have cable TV on in my main zone, and run music to my Zone 2. Is there a setting in my Apple TV that I need to change so it accepts both HDMI and Optical Output, or I would even like to have the same audio source in both zones.

Does this make sense?

huh? hook up the optical to analog converter and it just works.... set the audio to stereo and not dd 5.1
