Now What?

Thread Starter
Greetings! First post but lurked for some time.
I want 2 ch. only. Had HT at one time but did not like it.
Have already purchased KEF xq40 speakers, Harmon Kardon 990, APC 15 conditioner, and MIT cables. Have not installed anything yet. I listen almost exclusively to sat. music from Dish TV, then CD's. About 80/20.
Have an old (20+ yrs.) Yamaha RX V870 in exc. shape. Just afraid the 870 will die, etc. after so much time. I am totally "ignorant" asto DAC's,Ipad, lossless, etc.
Finally my question, what would be your recommendations for new receiver, or whatever? AVR, Stereo Receiver, etc. Can go to $1500ish. Thx.

Now what? You already have all you need so just connect everything together and enjoy.

Don't fix what isn't broke... it seems to me you have a good 2 channel system in front of you

Hook it up and go. Be sure you have a good quality digital cable since you listen to music over the Sat network.

In that case, return the conditioner and the cables. They're a total waste of money.

Um, what do you need this for, if you have the HK? If you need a DAC, it'll serve as a DAC (if it's got pre-outs). If/when it fails, you can get another DAC (or AVR with a DAC).

Can't think of anything you need that would cost $1500.

All right, maybe one thing: an AVR with some sort of room correction.

And try to ignore advice like this:

Invest on acoustic treatments.

Hook it up and go! Don't worry about the receiver dying, cross that bridge if you get to it.

Besides, you have the 990.

I'll agree on the overly high price on MIT cables, I will have to disagree on the power conditioner.
In multiple systems, in multiple houses over the years, I have had issues with hum that hasn't been able to be corrected without the use of a power conditioner. They are a sound investment.

What type of treatments do you use and how did you determine their placement?

I second this. When I have my Tripp-Lite power conditioners in play, my system is absolutely dead silent, whereas without them I can hear a faint hum coming through the speakers when the amps are on. You don't have to break the bank, either. I got a really good deal on four of these things.

When you say hk 990 are you speaking of the matching cd player (also a 990) or the integrated amp. It seems you may be talking about the cd player which is why you are talking about your old yama. If this is the case, I'd use the yama, save up and get the hk990 integrated amp. If you already have the integrated amp, put it all together, run the room correction routine and start enjoying. You may find with adequate room correction applied you don't need room treatments.

OK, but he hasn't even hooked up his system yet. It's silly to spend money solving a problem you don't have.

That would make more sense. I didn't realize HK made a CD player with the same model number.

Not a bad idea, but you don't have to spend two grand to get good room correction these days.

I only mention the HK990 integrated amp as the CD player has balanced xlr outputs, and the HK990 has the balanced inputs. Plus the KEFs can suck some power with amplification recommendation of 15-200 watts @ 8ohms. The HK is a power beast.
