Mac Mini - messed up multi channel audio

Thread Starter
Just got a new Mac Mini and hooked it up to my receiver.

Unpleasant surprise - most multi channel MKV files are messed up - center channel plays from my left surround for sure, not sure where everything else maps out but in general it seems like it treats my left surround as center and everything to the left and right as corresponding speakers. Would be really funny if it wasn't so annoying.

This affects only VLC and MPlayerx, iTunes plays movies with multi channel audio just fine.

Googling reveals that this particular thing popped up after the latest Lion update.

Any one else with the same problem?

Same here (on occasion). Test in vlc and/or mplayerx if the second sound stream ( if present) plays fine. I got the impression that the HD stream messed it up, but DD and core DTS were fine.

I believe installing Perian corrects this issue.

This was exactly my problem. I tried to get over it, but I couldn't. When I was researching an unrelated issue last night for my camcorder, I came across the solution, so I spent some time and wrote a nice howto for everybody (I knew I couldn't be the only person with this problem).

Not on its own. Perian offers the codecs. More configuration is needed.
