Today is the NHL Winter Classic between the NY Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers at Citizens Bank Park, home of the Philadelphia Phillies.

Should be a great game if your a hockey fan.

Game is on NBC HD in 1080i and Dolby Digital 5.1, CBC is 720p & DD5.1.

Scorebar is too big!

WNBC-DT FiOS NYC

Video is good from all cameras except the cam above the goal on the right is very soft.

Winter Classic logo on the top right of the score bar keeps flickering from sharp to soft and there's noticeable artifacts on and around the score bar.

Only minor annoyance is the cable cam gets in the way of the blimp shots.

Watching on D*. PQ looks very good especially the orange in the Flyers jerseys. Sound is awesome.

Actually I think the new bar is just perfect. Remember there are people who watch on smaller screens and on standard definiton screens.

I can remember the firestorm when FNC debuted their new graphics package. Everyone was screaming about the size of the graphics, but the firestorm eventually died down.

Not on CBC!

Viewing OTA from CBET-DT CBC HD Windsor. Looks and sounds really good. Some of the best 720p I've seen; no subchannels, no splicer, no nothing but HD goodness.

Well I don't care about those people. That's their own problem.

Is NBC considering a move to 16:9? Given its size, seems like it's designed for letterbox. A 16:9 move for the Olympics would be cool.

I'm watching it right now on my small SD set in my Office. The score Bug is big, but even watching in 4x3 SD they could raise it up a bit and still have plenty of space. I'm guessing it's really too low in HD. I'll see for myself shortly.....

Nice effort by both teams..

Not so sure the officials matched that effort with their inconsistent calls.

Go Hawks!

I'm getting tired of all these camera shots still framed for 4:3. What a waste to have to see the area outside of the end boards. Time to start framing all shots 16:9 and letterbox for SD viewers.

Still mad at WNCN for deciding to pull the pregame stuff and show Ellen and Judge Judy all the way up until 3:00. Who in the hell makes this kind of decision? Luckily I was able to see WECT at home here in Pinehurst, so I could at least watch in SD.

The biggest thing with me was that they weren't even showing filler stuff for the first few minutes after 1:00, and it was completely live coverage after 2:30. What the ****?

It was obvious how second-rate they are around here when for at least 10-15 minutes after 1:00, Ellen was being shown with video and audio, while the Winter Classic audio was still playing in the background. What a joke.

CBC looks really really good. Their HD quality is top notch and broadcast is always great on HNIC.

That said, the NBC broadcast looked good too. Looked and sounded great, some bad camera angles but meh.

The game's officiating on the other hand, was awful.

John Tortarella in his post game press conference accused the referees (only half jokingly) of having met with NBC executives and being told to do anything they could to extend the game to overtime. I imagine he will be fined by the league, but I'm glad he had the b**** to say something about it.

How come the game wasn't available in 3D like the 2011 Classic ?

Comcast SF Bay Area NBC affiliate. The picture was very good although at first, when I saw the Rangers' off-whiite (or cream) sweaters, I thought that my Panny Plasma was doing it's sometimes habit of not showing bright whites on hockey games. Did a quick comparison with our LCD in the bedroom and realized that all was well. I really liked the look of the sweaters and of Tortarella's jacket with the matching sleeves.

BTW, did anyone watch the special on the 1972 Canada-Soviet Union series? It was absolutely fantastic, beautifully shot and edited with the great Peter Coyote doing the narration duties. If you didn't see it, try to catch it on NBC Sports Channel when it runs again. Just to see all of the great NHL players from that era is worth watching it for.

PQ looked better than usual for NBC with the Universal Sports subchannel dying a quiet death and a bit of the bandwidth going back to HD. Audio mix was a little flat at the start, but after a bit of tweaking it sounded great. Too much fascination with the goofy camera angles by the director; just stick to the main camera during live action, and maybe the center ice or behind-net cameras for power plays so we can see the whole setup. Save the rest for replays and other stuff when the puck is dead. That goes for normal indoor games too, enough of the portables in the corners that get completely obscured when the ref or a player skates in front of them.
