On the back table is the home modem, router & laptop. I have 2 cat5 cables running in-wall from the router to the HT equip for the AVR and PS3.

Two directional center speakers installed in ceiling. I used two to try and match the output of the two mains. I went with in-ceiling so that I could add Non-AT screen and PJ later on.

When you're looking at the image on Photobucket, you'll see that it gives you a few links, Email, direct, HTML and IMG. Copy the IMG link and simply paste it here. It's already wrapped in the "IMG" tag, so the forum will do the rest to display it

great setup! I think you accomplished what you wanted, it's a very non intrusive setup.

I'm sure others will mention it and I'm not sure if it's always like that but personally, I wouldn't put anything on top of your Onkyo. It needs every square inch of ventilation it can get.

System before adding amplifier, replacing PS2 with PS3 and redistributing components to get the speaker switch off the Onkyo AVR

Jproy13 - I hear you on the Onkyo heat and the placement on the zone 3 speaker switch. I was trying to balance looks, weight and space on the shelves. The only thing I have going for me on the switch is that it only covers 1/2 to 2/3 of the top of the AVR allowing heat to escape.

That is a very nice room!!! Those speakers blend VERY well with the room. Was there a special technique to painting the grilles? I've always wanted to paint grilles of my in-ceiling speakers up in my media-room (Roon B), but don't want to lose any audible quality.

In respect to the cooling, years ago--my first HDMI receiver (Onkyo TX-SR674) used to shut-down when I placed something on top of it or inserted it into an enclosed shelve structure. That's actually how I got the idea for creating a "media closet" in the pantry.....so the Onkyo and the Center Speaker (back then, an Infinity C25) wouldn't have to compete for top-shelf space.

I say all that to say, there are ventilation units like this.

They suck air from your component and push it out the front, allowinig you to stack as many components as you'd like. That could make sure heat damage isn't happening to your Onkyo over time.

Thanks Brolic & Jproy13, appreciate the thoughtful comments.

I actually have that cooling unit with a cover - it is sitting on top of the cable box that is very warm all the time. I needed to create a space between the cable box and small periferals (HD radio unit, Ipod dock and Apple TV). I guess I should take another look at the configuration. It's very tight (especially with wire management) and I can't just close a cabinet door to hide it.

Glad you like the speaker grills painted - it really just took some proper inexpensive tools and patience. I spray painted the grills with a small disposable spray gun kit from Home Depot. The brand is Preval (professional portable sprayer) for less than $20 I think. You actually use regular wall or ceiling house paint (acrylic) and mix it with 50% water. - I used distilled and applied two thin coats. I also used a small compressed can of air to blow out any grill holes that filled with paint.

Thanks Jim and Daman,

Appreciate the kind words. I know it's not as nice as some of the dedicated rooms out there, but it works for us. The somewhat low key approach helps with the WAF.

Working with the glass shelves wasn't without its challenges. Due to the limited space, weight constraints and wire management I had to eliminate a few pieces of equipment such as an Onkyo Integra (before Integra split brands from Onkyo) 6 disc CD player and really cool dual tape deck from the 90s. Of course I had not used the tape deck in years but it still hurt to put it back in the box. The CD player was too deep. The VCR was put back into its box as well. I know - sacrifices we all make

I like your choice of equipment and the room really does look nice but good gravy is that tv up high. How do you not have neck cramps after watching a movie? Not trying to be an ass or anything and hey you work with the room but have you considered a front projector?

I had the same exact thought as the house was being finished (new Construction). When we first planned for the TV over the fireplace, we thought the TV would be a foot lower. We did not expect the mantel to be so tall. I guess it needed to be to fit the scale of the room. However, the sectional in the room has a natural recline that makes watching TV very comfortable. No neck muscles required to lift ; )

I've had a few people over and they have commented that they thought it was going to be tough to watch at that height and were surprised at how comfortable it was. But yes - you work with what you have.

I do have plans for a PJ and motorized screen, that is the only reason the center speakers are in the ceiling (another compromise). I can't use an AT screen due to ambient light/PQ issues.

I ordered a second Paradigm Reference Seismic 110 sub this week from my AV dealer. It should be here in another week or so. I’m hoping this will balance out the bass in the large room. The single sub literally shakes the whole house when I crank it, but I sometimes feel that I am over driving it for the space and do not want to cause any damage. And the kid in me will admit that my AVR has two sub outs and I had the room wired to handle a second sub in the opposite corner last spring…..As they say in Spinal Tap – “but it goes to 11”

I may also pick up a used or new amp to help take the load off the AVR – I am probably overdriving the speakers with too little power when watching action movies. I’m thinking amps last a long time and are not as subject to new feature upgrades like typical AV gear – so good quality/value is key to me.

Yeah I getcha with the tv thing. As long as it's comfortable that's all that matters.

As for the amp yeah I'd always recommend people invest in a good amp(s). I used an HK amp for a number of years and enjoyed what it brought over the internal amps in my receiver. I only sold it because I wanted to go with seperate amps and needed to make the break with it. It was time to move on lol.

Let us know how the second sub sounds, if anything it should sound smoother because that single sub isn't going to have to pull double duty being accurate while filling the room volume up. Dual subs are another thing I always advocate if you can swing it.

The upgrade process continues - I purchased a used (mint condition) Arcam Diva P1000 7 channel amplifier over the weekend. This should improve the sound of the Atlantic's and provide better sound quality at low volumes. Hoping this also reduces the heat output on the Onkyo. It was running hot yesterday after being on pretty much all day - it is typically run for only a couple hours at a time max.

I'll hopefully have it integrated into my system some how over the weekend - there is too much weight to add it to an existing shelf. Will post pics once installed with new Transparent link audio cables.

Hoping the 2nd sub arrives this week as well.

Well, it’s been a long weekend without the use of my home theater equipment while rework my system to incorporate a new amp. What a PITA. I’m ready to hook it up now after moving some cables , adding a few new holes and filling another. I also added a unique new shelf to hold the amp as well. I am just waiting for a couple more Transparent cables and short power cable to arrive (hopefully) this week. I’m also still waiting for my new sub as well. Below are a few pictures of my progress.

PS: My wife thinks I am the biggest geek right now

Progress!! I was able to hook up my new (used but new to me) Arcam Diva P1000 amplifier over the weekend. I also decided to finally bite the bullet this weekend and picked up a PS3 (160GB I think) and controller charging dock for my son since I was taking everything a part anyway. Due to the size of the PS3 versus the smaller PS2, I had to move a few pieces of equipment around. I think it came out okay and I was able to employ the advice of a few of you and move the Aton speaker switch off the top of the Onkyo. It now sits on the second from the top shelf under the blu ray player. Unfortunately, to do this I had to extend the speaker wires that were coming from the wall to reach the new height of the speaker switch. The new PS3 sits on the cooling fan over the DVR box – although I do not think the DVR box ever gets hot enough to turn on the fan (thermal switch set at 80 degrees), the DVR always feels warm and used to transfer the heat to the units sitting directly above before the fan was placed there.
I’m still waiting for a few Transparent interconnect cables and the second powered sub –they will be in this week.
Anyway, below are a few pictures of the new amp, PS3 and new overall configuration.

I’ve had a couple hours of uninterrupted listening time with the new amp and can honestly say that when listening to two channel, the speakers sound fuller or more robust. Not sure what the proper terminology is, but I like it. I noticed more bass and mid instantly from the mains. I also find that I’m not turning the volume up as much either, which my wife has commented she appreciated not making her ears bleed. Listening in various surround modes, I thought everything sounded better (the sub sounded the same as expected) and heard new surround effects I did not recall before. Who knew there were millions of pieces of glass being broken all around you in Thor during the town robot fighting scene. Maybe I just didn’t pay close enough attention before – but I noticed it this time.

Watched a few action scenes in blu ray (Iron Man 2, Thor, Batman Begins, Real Steel, Shooter) and a few blu ray concert songs (U2 360 tour, Adele & Chris Botti in Boston) and have noticed a higher quality fuller sound all around.

Overall, I’m very pleased with the new amp and glad I stepped up in quality.

My only complaint is with the Onkyo - it does not have a 12v trigger for an amp, but it does for zones 2 and 3 - go figure. Now I have to train my family to turn on and off one more thing.

Just noticed your room in your signature and it really turned out great. Very clean looking and the media shelves are a thing of beauty. Really like how clean it looks. Very nice job, I am sure you are getting lots of use out of the room.

Still cannot get over how small that subwoofer is considering how much it outputs..

Atlantic Technology really makes some nice speakers as well.

Thanks ack_bk, I appreciate it - I've already said it, but your basement came out great.

I am very happy with the set-up these days. What I like about the main L&R Atlantic's is that I can point in and down (toe in) the tweeter and two mids toward the listening area. The mids and tweeter are sealed as well but the woofer is not. I could rip out the dry wall and add a back-box, but it did not seem worth it given the powered subwoofer. The added amp also helped out a lot on the sound fullness.

I did receive the second Paradigm Seismic 110 PSW last weekend, but have not had a chance to play with it much or take pictures. The Seismic does output quite a bit - I am very happy with them. I spent the weekend outside prepping the yard and fertilizing everything since it was so nice out. I will post some pictures this weekend hopefully.

I used to listen to movies at approx -6 to -12 Db, but now I usually have it around -25 to -30Db and it sounds a heck of a lot better with the added power and second sub. My wife has commented several times she likes it much better as well. Miketr75, Your Anthem D2v is no slouch - it's a very nice piece of equipment and would imagine it rivals a Mcintosh or Classe processor (but I am not sure). It all looks great and i would imagine sounds great as well.

I updated my first post with the current photos and moved some of the older photos into my second post

What's new - Finally received and added second powered subwoofer - another Paradigm Reference Seismic 110. It really helped smooth out the bass in the room as well as add more bass when listening at lower volumes. A great addition to the system.

Opening the box and introducing my PSW1 to it's new brother ; ) Excuse the white cloth ties on the curtains - my wife says that she is trying to "train" the curtains


PSW2 in it's new location in the opposite corner from the PSW1. I need to clean up the wires a bit still.
