Advice for compact sub

Thread Starter
As someone who has been aspiring to a nicer home theater for the past year, I received a Yamaha RX-V671 Receiver as a Christmas gift. Previously I just had a random Sony HTiB with a bunch of small satellites. I'll probably by new front and center speakers sometime in the next year. However the sub that it had was passive so it can't connect to the new receiver. Rather than get an amp for it, I'm just going to buy a new sub immediately.

First, I don't have a good idea how much one should spend on a sub. I would probably say I'd like to spend somewhere between 1000-1500 on a whole new speaker system but I don't know how much of that should be a sub. Is $200-500 about right?

Now for my more specific requirement. I live in a very tight DC apartment (a 1 bed/1 bath for a whopping 525 sq ft). Simply due to the furniture layout, I really don't have space for anything larger than a 12" width (I can fit a bit more length), though 8-10" is ideal. My current sub is something like 7x18 and by the GF standards, it's ideal. I don't need anything super powerful as it's a small room and I do have neighbors, but good fidelity for music is important and I also do a lot of movies and video games. Lastly, I wonder if my compact requirement, doesn't mean I should just by a cheap small sub and upgrade to something better when the day comes that I have more space. Or are there nice quality subs that can be fit in a small space?

I've been trying to browse around the forums all weekend but the choices seem endless. I saw another thread on this but his budget was a lot bigger than mine.

Thanks.

Check out the Outlaw Audio M8 and HSU STF-1. Obviously, as small 8" subs, neither will perform like a bigger, more expensive 10" or 12". But either would be a fantastic improvement over the HTIB sub you've been using, and I think you'd be quite pleased for a small apartment sub. Either would be worth keeping if you move to a bigger place for a bedroom or small office audio setup.

Here is a review of one of them: http://news.cnet.com/8301-13645_3-20042164-47.html

As for speakers, post in the AVS speaker forum with your budget for them.

With the speaker budget you could get some good energy speakers from vanns...or maybe aperion bookshelves...the choices are endless lol. Check out the speaker section for more help in that area. As for subs...525 sq feet... hmmm... charlie hit it on the spot. I've heard the stf 1/2s and were pleased by their sq but that was in a sound treated room...still pretty darn good for their price.

I don't know if many will agree but id say get a decent to nice sub to start off. I should've done that but I didn't and regret not saving all the money I could've from going "big" the first time around. But at the same time don't get something so big that you can't fit in the room nicely lol
