Good day everybody,

I bough in 2010 a LG LCD TV (not LED) 55LD650. I'm looking to replace it by the LG 55LW5700 from BestBuy for 1300$.

I read the thread; good stuff by the way.

If picture quality is my priority, is it a good idea to replace my actual set? I don't really want to change the 5700 into 5600 by hacking the menu...what about picture quality without local dimming?

What I do: Gaming, movie, computer plug to TV, PS3, XBOX

THANK YOU all very much !

I have local dimming turned off. I also have a 47LD650, and frankly the picture on that set if really great for a non-local-dimming set. The service menu hacks are a piece of cake, so I recommend doing them to get the full features of the 5600 + more (like AC3 sound from the optical port; DVR function, THX menus, etc.).

HI,
I am going crazy trying to find out how to switch the TV in to 3d modes quickly. Currently I am having to into the Menu/Settings then choose 3d.

The manual says hot the 3d button but I dammed if I can find it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't have my remote in front of me but if I remember right it is towards the middle. I believe just above the HOME button or the MUTE button.
thanks jaymerkramer, MY remote is missing that button. I just googled the picture and it has the 3d Button.

I guess Costco gave me the wrong controller.

Time to swap it.
yeah above my mute button I have ratio...No wonder it was apain in the ass to turn on 3D

Great tips in this thread.

two questions that I'm unable to find an answer to.

1) Can anyone tell me how to disable the built-in tuner input? I have nothing to connect to it and it's driving me insane how the 55lw5700 keeps defaulting back to the tuner even though there are other inputs setup.

2) How do I configure the color settings for the built-in apps like netflix? I've tuned the set with the settings in this thread but when I startup the builtin apps it seems to revert back to the default settings.

Seems like a great display with awful software. I'm hoping someone can help me before I give up and return it. 98% of my use is watching netflix streaming. Thanks!

1. Mine doesn't do this, it always turns back on to the input it was on when I turned it off.

2. The quick menu button lets you adjust video settings when using apps, they are more limited then then you get with the normal inputs but mine holds the settings even after turning off they have never went back to default.

Have you downloaded the latest firmware via the website, it is newer then what the auto update gives you? You don't by chance have your tv in Shop Mode instead of Home Mode do you?
I just updated via usb as suggested.

TV returns to HDMI inputs if the input source is on before the tv is turned on. If I power the display prior to the source then it returns to the tuner. I don't see any way of changing that or defining a new/different default.

Unfortunate that you cant get full image control over sources provided by apps like you can with normal HDMI inputs.

Netflix app doesnt even seem to work for me on this tv. Starting the apps takes several minutes from the time I power on the display to start and once the netflix app populates the queue list it just errors out trying to play any of the selections. This has been happening for several days since I bought the display. Old display and laptop will both play the same selections on the same network w/o any issue. Seems to be specific to the LG display.

Any suggestions? For a "smart" tv it's not very smart. My several year old panasonic worked much better in this regard. A bit disappointed. I figured that a newer set would deliver a much better user experience.

If there is no fix it's okay. I'll just return it and try something else. Thanks for the help.

If I turn my set on while left on the last input it was on such as HDMI for example and the device is off I get a box that pops up that says " no signal for current input device" and then gives you the option to open the input list or close the box. If I choose nothing after a few seconds I get a spinning LG cube that says no signal.

I timed that from when I click on the Netflix icon to having a fully populated screen it takes mine 22 seconds. When clicking on a movie it took 10 seconds for the movie to fully load and play. This was a HD movie with 5.1 sound. Mine is hard wired so I can't comment on the wireless speed.

Have you tried doing a full "initial setting" from the option menu and maybe "initialization of premium" from the support page? If none of that works it sounds like maybe a call to LG to see if you have a defective set.

47LW5700 - Anyone experienced Home Menu slowness after a firmware update? An update came in last night (04.03.01) and, because I couldn't find it online in order to do the easier & much quicker USB flash drive method of updating, I allowed it to update over the wired LAN connection. It took approximately 3 hours to download and install. After a reboot I find the Home menu rather slow, taking almost a minute to sign in sometimes and some apps take ages to load. I'm assuming the TV automatically sheds its cache and temporary files after using such a method for update but in this case it seems to have not done that.
Anyone else experiencing this?

I notice the firmware update didn't get rid of the rather annoying booming that emanates from the TOSlink audio out connection when there's no sound signal live. I was hoping they'd address it.

This is the first time I've allowed the update to proceed using the direct download method.

By the way, maybe I'm going blind, but from the link in post #1 on how to enter the Service Menu I see all kinds of remotes mentioned but no option for the actual LG Remote. I was interested in seeing if local dimming is on or off, that's all. I have a feeling it's on anyway as my blacks are pretty solid.

You will need one of those controllers first to access the Service menu to enable Local Dimming. Once you have done that it's available thought the normal menu's

If you don't have one of those remotes download the LG Service Menu App for Android. It works really the only downside is that you have to purchase it.

Anyone have a list of what the new updates fixes/Adds?

thanks,
Thanks. I don't have an Android device so will have to settle for yet another remote I guess...eventually. I wonder how the LG technician gets it up using my remote then? He did just that when last here for an unrelated matter.
That download is still not showing on LG's website...unless you go to foreign language ones. I hope this isn't a total screw up from LG!!
No Idea how the tech got up the Service menu. If he comes again ask him

I read this from the 5600 forum bout people having problems with the update. It was posted by Kajo (so thanks to him)

(translated from Portuguese).

Before updating:
- Restore the TVs initial settings. HOME > SETTINGS > OPTIONS > INITIAL SETUP
- Update the TV. HOME > SETTINGS > SUPPORT > SOFTWARE UPDATE
- After the update, leave the TV powered on for 1 hour (no fiddling with the TV) to allow the upgrade to fully activate (information from LG directly).
- Disconnect and reconnect (may or may not be required).

If you have already updated:
- Restore the TVs initial settings. HOME > SETTINGS > OPTIONS > INITIAL SETUP
- HOME> SETTINGS option and went on SUPPORT> PREMIUM START

And have read that some people experience this issue and some people don't. Maybe it happens to tv that have gone thru service menu hacks?? Can anyone confirm that the service menu hacks are still enabled after the update?

I haven't tried any of this myself, just passing along this information. Hope it helps tho.

OK reset and it seems to have eased the 'stickiness' a bit. In future I'll wait until the update can be downloaded to a flash drive and do it that way.

Back to that remote question and the service menu I have such a host of remotes already I'm reluctant to add another...let's see, 2 x Sony, Oppo, Cisco (box), Bose and even an old JVC DVD/VCR one and some have multi-unit control but the question would be which key it the magic one?
what 3D settings are you guys using.
What parameters are you looking for? 3D is 3D - the TV supports whatever is thrown at it basically. It supports 4 different types of 3D plus 2D > 3D. It all depends on the source.
The difference between this TV and some others is that it employs passive 3D so inexpensive polarized glasses or clip-ons (same as used in Movie Theatres) can be used rather than the expensive, flickery and heavier shutter glasses.

harmony!! Or try the RCA RCR312WR from Wal-Mart like others have suggested. (it works)

I just picked up the 55 inch model from Costco. Overall, I'm pretty happy with it but I have a few questions:

1) When I use the two calibrated settings (per the original post), I find the image to be dark. Regular TV (source is HD Directv) is dark and some channels are actually muddy.

Are these settings for general viewing or are they meant only for watching blu ray in a darkened room?

2) I noticed some "glow" in the corners. I've read that edge-lit LED's have a glow around the perimeter but was just wondering what is a normal level. Any pics of what defective light leakage looks like?

thanks,

The only thing I've noticed so far is in the menu Smart TV Setting/Premium Version/Netcast Platform Ver. changed from 5 to 6. Must be some minor fix.
OK despite resetting the TV several times I couldn't get rid of the sluggish Home screen which never quite seemed to totally load most times I tried it, so I got onto the LG Support Live Chat.
Mike P. at Support told me that "We are currently working on this slight issue" indicating that 4.03.01 has a problem so I would advise people to avoid it for now.
He told me that it was easy to revert to the previous software version, which I wasn't even aware could be done.
Call up Home and go to Setup, then the Option screen (the one with briefcase or toolbox with a spanner on it) and click 9 seven times. The software will revert instantly and reboot the set.
That's very useful to remember and I can vouch that it works.
I assume that it or the next update will eventually appear on the download page at Support when the problems, whatever they are, are ironed out. It explains why 4.03.01 still isn't showing on their support page.
Hope this helps someone.

I had the slow response after the update. Going to the setup menu and initializing the premium services seemed to fix the issue.

That appeared to work for a while but then the slowness returned. As the online chat guy admitted there was a problem I took his advice and went back to the previous version.

Firmware v4.03.01 has been withdrawn from the servers and is no longer being offered.

Thanks for the tip on the Magic Motion Remote from Amazon, just ordered one. I'd like to add that I went searching for a RCA remote matching any numbers in the Wiki including the RCR312WR,RCR3273N, RCR3283N, RCR412SN, RCR412BN, RCR4383N, RCR4258N, RCR4358N, RCR4373N, RCR4383N, RCR461, RCR612N, RCR473N, RCR812N, RCR815N

Anyways it turns out my MTS TV 2 Wire Box remote control for the Motorolla VIP1200 works. Never had to program any codes, just hit TV and guide button. The box is connected through a Pioneer VSK-1021 then to HDMI 1 input on the tv with Ethernet hi-speed HDMI cables ($8)
I did waste half a day going to all the stores I could think of including Wal-Mart first, then a few hours on the internet.
I hope this saves someone some time and money.

Hi guys just want to ask if any body try the lg service menu explorer application from the android market if its worth and work without any problem before buying this application. Because I can't find an RCA remote in my area. I'm from Kuwait anyway. Thanks in advance..
