Just a guess, it will convert protected sources to 3D but won't allow you to capture them with the thunderbolt connection.

Will this black magic unit output frame packed 3d from 2d it converts over hdmi? In specs it states dual full stream bit I am unsure if this means frame packed or not.

I spoke with the UK distributor today, he said he understood that the new 3D can go from 2D Blu-Ray to 3D output on HDMI with the single box, it no longer requires the 2 box configuration like you needed with the VC-100.

Has anyone here actually seen one of the new 3D units in operation who can confirm this?

I know this is really pushing things, but can these units also do 2160P scaling for the new 4K projectors?

I'm with you on that. Now that things have become far more affordable, Black Magic should go all the way and build a complete video processor that does the following:

1. Best 2D to 3D converter (they already do this)
2. Take any 3D (native or upcoverted) and output via dual-hdmi to 2 projectors for passive 3D solutions.
3. Upconvert to 4K for 4K projectors
4. For new 4K projectors/tv's, take up to 4 hdmi inputs, and output up to 4 sources on one screen.
5. For those with video walls (ie., 4 separate TV's), take up to 4 hdmi inputs and output up to 4 different monitors via 4 hdmi outputs.

I've seen all the above done above in different installs, but right now it takes a lot of boxes to do all this.

Just had an e-mail from Black Magic support and they have confirmed that the Teranex 3D can do the whole conversion process in the single box. So that's 2D to frame packed or side by side 3D in the 1 box, for $4K!

It was already formidable, but with this capability in a single box this must make this an almost unbeatable value proposition. I now really can't wait to see this beast in operation, I think my credit card might be taking a hit in the next few months!

100% agree with you on this wish list. Given the formidable number crunching capability which the 3D must have to do what it does (and it's processing power must be greater than the VC100 it replaces) then I am sure that the computational requirements of what you're suggesting are well within reach. Of course the extra HDMI ports and HDMI routing internally would require more hardware than they currently have, but again I am sure that this is not insurmountable.

I think the only thing which will hold them back will be demand for these capabilitites in the broadcast and general marketplace. Passive 3D is still a very specialist area compared with single display, active 3D. Likewise 4K is still a tiny niche in the niche of projection displays, but I am sure that when the next generation of 4K SXRD chips come out and Sony does as it always does, which is slash the price of it's 1st gen technology to bring it down to a more affordable level, then I am sure Black Magic will be there. Until then I can't wait to see what this 3D can do for both scaling my laserdisc colelction and for converting 2D to 3D.

Yeah, and now it is 4K;-).

As for 4 outputs for new 4K displays, only old displays do it that way, it should have HDMI 1.4 for 4K aswell. Same as the RED Ray player, 4x HDMI out only, sofar.

I know the original system was stratospherically expensive, but it had, and as far as I know still has, no equal.

At that price point it was dream ware, like a Bugatti Veyron or a date with Charlize Theron.

I am also pretty conservative with my purchases, after all " I'm just a poor boy from a poor family"

Wow, this looks like the perfect replacement for my aging 2D Lumagen.

Well that's good news.

I was avoiding this even at the new price, because of all the complicated connection issues, and additional equipment needed.

So if I can get this for $4K, and it sits in-line on my HDMI chain - where can I buy it?

If one had no interest in 3d or 4k, would there be an advantage to this unit over a Lumagen?

I would think not as it is my understanding that this unit does not have CMS capabilities whereas the Lumagen obviously does...

This point is probably moot for folks that have projectors with full CMS controls (it is for me).

Should have superior scaling and noise reduction. But no CMS. I'll be replacing my VP50pro with one of the 2D units.I may even be able to dump the old Digital Vision DVNR box I use for SD noise reduction.

No HDCP

For a consumer product, the Lumagen is probably best. But the Teranex was/is a broadcast grade product. We have one of the original 1999 boxes where I work. It's six rack units, takes over 1kw of power, and cost $80K back then. What Teranex did was to reduce this box of PC boards to a chip. That is probably what put them out of business. Same thing happened to Qvis when they ported their hardware Wavelet compression engine to a single chip. Unless you are in consumer or the IT market you will never recover the costs of developing such a complex chip.

Teranex (via Silcon Optix) put up the monstrous R&D costs to make the chip, went bankrupt, and Black magic walks in and gets a fully designed and debugged chip which now costs pennies to make. That's why they can sell the box for $2K.

The image quality is the highest I have seen and I have critically evaluated many upconversion devices over the past 10 years in a broadcast environment.

Another problem is the quality and price were even too high for general broadcast use. We use it in high end mastering and post production but most broadcasters need a basic upconverter for slapping SD material into an HD program stream. The Teranex was too complicated for such a simple job. And technology has now brought us broadcast type upconverters for about $500 per card which are fine for the job.

Well, look at the new cheap stuff Snell (Previously Snell & Wilcox) has announced at NAB, pennies on the pound, compared to its classic hardware products, and those have gotten much cheaper since the last century. Snell was king of the hill in framerate/standards conversion. Teranex is still around, but is there still any competition left?! LetItWave moved its efforts from chips to high end 19" boxes years ago, for broadcast, in the same price range as Snell/Teranex, but disappeared from the scene years ago.

Indeed the Teranex guy at ISE told me that my impression that the chip was no longer in use in other products such projectors, because it simply was to expensive for those products. Last year I did come across some vague website from an Canadian company that still seemed to offer pc boards using the chip.

The scaling in my Realta (i.e. Teranex scaling) based processor doesn't "ring". It's basically, GIGO. You put something IN with intrinsic ringing, that's the way it comes OUT. Put something IN with clean artifact-free edges, that's the way it comes OUT. The ringing I typically see appears to have originated in older MPEG encoding lowpass filtering. Content produced with the newest generation of MPEG encoding software seems to be almost totally free of that kind of artifact.

If you were to look inside the to-be-released Blackmagic Teranex 2D processor, I'm sure that what you'll see is a Realta video processing engine.

I hope that they will have an upgrade path to 4k in the near future. I am thinking of getting the RED 4k Laser Projector when it comes out and hooking this box to it.
