Do any "non-animated" 3D movies (outside of Avatar) even compare?

So far, I have yet to find a 3D movie that is even close to the 3D quality I see in animated films like HTTYD and Tangled. In some cases, the 3D in "normal" movies has been god awful. (Clash of the Titans, Thor) I recently watched Captain America, and it was decent, but still not even in the same ballpark. Next I'll be trying Deathly Hallows Part 2, but I don't have high hopes.

So are there any "standard" movies outside of Avatar with GOOD 3D? Or should I just stick with animated kid flicks that I know are going to really pop?

All the movies you are mentioning are 2D conversions.

Check out some true 3D films.

Fright Night, Final Dest 4 & 5, Res Evil, Drive Angry.

Not sure if you would call it animated (but probably has less then Avatar) but Yogi Bear is pretty good 3D.

Don't waste your time on HPDH2. It is the worst 3D I have ever seen. Pirates of the Carribean 3D was shot in native 3D and an excellent example of good non-animated 3D.

I totally agree, but many here do not.

I also enjoyed the 3D in Resident Evil Afterlife and Tron. None of these movies are big on "POP", but I'm not in the "POP" fan base. If you are interested in things poking at you from the screen, check out the "Best Gimmicks" thread. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1360954

Yeah, pop might not have been the best word choice. I'm not looking for things to pop out at me necessarily, but I want to see good depth throughout at the very least. I'll have to give Pirates 4 a try. I did see Final Destination 4, and that was better than most of the others I've seen.

Ditto. For 'TRON Legacy', not all parts are 3D. I'm about half-way through it right now. Also, it switches between IMAX 1.78:1 and scope.

Fright Night, Resident Evil, Drive Angry, Saw 3d, Priest, Alice in wonder land, Step up, Sanctum all have good 3d. I have over 30 3d movies just picked up Captain America and Green lantern, haven't had a chance to watch them yet. There are plenty of good non animated 3d movies out, I haven't seen Avatar in 3d besides cox ondemand so not sure how good it really is. I've seen plenty of 3d movies FN, RE, DA are some of the best live action 3d movies I've seen.

I don't know what the general thought is - but I found Alice in Wonderland in 3D to be pretty well done.

The Imax 3D blu rays are probably the best examples of live action 3D. They are all full screen (1.78:1) and natively shot in 3D. The presentation can be a little dry at times but titles such as Under the Sea, Hubble 3D, Space Station 3D and Giants of the Patagonia have some of the best live action 3D out there.

The IMax docs have been the most impressive to me. For movies, it's Tron - even though I know some feel it's too conservative.

I picked up Step Up 3D for my four year old daughter. She loves music and dance, so the wife and I are "screening" it first to see what, if anything, is inappropriate for her. So far, it's just a really, really ****** dance movie with about every cliche you can imagine thrown in, but the 3D is - in Step Up 3D terms - "off the hook." I don't know that it makes sitting through this ass puke worth it, but it helps. Next to Tron, the second most impressive live-action 3D I've seen.

Personaly the most wow moments I have had is Avatar but that is just such a great movie in general. I really enjoyed Pirana 3d (the fish burping up his manhood was quite in your face haha). I also Liked final destatnion 3d.

The imax films are great. I love the opening scene in the Grand Canyon with the water droplets.

I hated the 3D in Fright Night, only beacuse I thought they did a terrible job with the lighting in the dark scenes and there are a ton of dark scenes. I had to disable the 3D just to watch it.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon is fantastic 3D. I'd put it 3rd in terms of 3D quality behind Avatar and Hugo for me.

Don't miss HUGO in the theaters...even better than Avatar IMHO! The entire movie 'pops'...Scorsese is a master of movie making, and 3D makes the movie.

I'm waiting for Hugo to become my new standard after the IMAX's (Hubble, Space Station, Under the Sea) have held that position. Cave of Forgotten Dreams was also very good, just not too exciting material for many. Also looking forward to Titanic, the preview seen at Hugo looked incredible (Cameron knows how to do iy correctly!)

Don't mean to derail the thread but this post brings up a big peeve of mine. Dark scenes generally don't work well with 3D (the opaque glasses often make the scenes painfully difficult to follow) yet it amazes me how many 3D movies spend so much of their time in dark areas. Even natively shot 3D films like Pirates of the Caribbean commit this mistake. If you're going to shoot your film in 3D, at least be more aware of its strengths and limitations and factor them into your production. I'll be curious to see how Ridley Scott handles Prometheus as that also seems to have a lot of darkness to it.

I've seen 2 movies so far in 3D. First was Tron and the 2nd was Underworld Awakening. In the case of Avatar, I thought the 3D effect was decent, but not all that great and honestly enjoyed the movie more in 2D in my home theater.

OTOH, 3D in Underworld Awakening was just horrific. In reading this thread, now I understand why also. It just appeared to be a bunch of overlays with popup characters on top of a background. The whole thing, for lack of a better term, looked like a cartoon. Just horrible and ruined the experience for me completely.

I just got Piranha and was disappointed with it. The movie was OK but very few 3D effects at all. Haven't seen Tron but all of the others are very good.

I have Space Station right now and think its great for 3d, but how is Hubble? I notice BB has it for $20 right now and was thinking of picking it up. Is the 3d at least as good as Space Station?
