So you're saying there won't be any OLED TV shipped in the next 18 months?

That all these manufacturers are spending hundreds of millions in the worse world wide economy to do what? tease everyone?

Really, if you're going to continue to troll your negative outlook on OLED, maybe keep it to the other threads. Thanks.

Yeah. It's kind of ridiculous to think that LG, for example, would put its credibility on the line with so many statements and press releases...with so much specificity...just to tease people. This is quite different than a low-key showing of a prototype. LG would have to contemplate going from being a major manufacturer to selling popcorn and plastic cups to engage in such fruitless, expensive, and self-defeating activity.

They didn't buy Kodak's patents for hobby purposes.

Maybe he's just complaining because OLED was supposed to be in the market years ago.

What strikes as funny to me is that the article states we'll see models by the 2012 Olympics and from memory the same was said that SED would be out by the Olympics about 4 years ago . OLED will be here I'm sure but it's been a long time in waiting though. Maybe this year will be the year. We'll see.

Samsung kinda is keeping it "low", probably gonna go "full blast" at CES? But with those "high caliber" statements (LG USA senior vice president James Fishler calls it “the ultimate display device” stating “This next-generation display will further strengthen LG’s position as a true leader and trend-setter of the home entertainment industry. It is the TV of dreams.”) LG is obviously targeting this time specifically US market "big time" and have to comply with it's very strict rules to succeed!

It's always a reasonable and safe position to take a wait and see attitude, and we'll all get some solid information soon.

This and similar threads are speculative threads, and everyone here is doing just that...speculating. Speaking with absolute authority about anything in this context is kind of silly.

However, there is a difference between the PR regarding SED (a good technology that encountered patent issues) and LG's probable impending release of OLED. I went back and looked at some of those articles, including those that made "Olympics" projections, and none of them had the specificity and seeming solidity as the articles regarding LG's WOLED.

So...speculating here...I think its all likely.

These things are gonna be so expensive, would be nice if they were to be priced at or below 4k. I think the price will be at or above 6k

Maybe people should (a) stop putting words into my posts and (b) get a life.

I never said no one would ship anything for 18 month. Although, since you brought it up... It wouldn't actually be surprising to learn that it'll be close to 18 months before full on distribution of any of these TV is real.

And do I think they spend hundreds of millions teasing us? Well, no, but they spend a fair amount. Last year, LG showed off 70" and 65" LCDs at CES, none of which reached the United States. It's not even clear they actually shipping a new model larger than 60", although they did a handful of shipments of a very uninteresting 72" from very late 2010.

Samsung? They showed off a 75" which never shipped anywhere outside of perhaps Korea, although I've never seen a report indicating it actually went out to retail.

Reporting past history and behavior is not "trolling". Expressing an opinion that a product category that currently has zero products does not merit an entire sub-forum is, I think in the opinion of many reasonable people, an entirely defensible position. While yours may differ, that doesn't make mine "trolling". Sorry.

I disagree. Said in the LG OLED thread that I suspect LG Display rights issue is probably coming.

Sammy has committed billion$ into their 5.5G last year, while LG has stuck with their 3.5G fab doing prototypes. I expect LG Display to use their rights proceeds to fund OLED plans but you can guess the timeline easily even if they start in 2Q.

More interesting to me is whether the difference between WOLED and RGB OLED is perceptible by J6P, while I maintain that the difference between LCD and OLED is perceptible, which is why OLED is viable.

What does the Psychic Hotline predict for the future of OLED and WOLED? O wait, they went bankrupt, and never saw it coming.

I will be glad when we start to get real news out of CES, so that all this predictions blather will stop for at least a little while.

Yay! Free markets!

I don't know that those will be 55" panels. It would be interesting if they went after the 32-40" market, since that seems to be where the most buy around the world, but that may mean we won't see those in the US.

CMI and AUO have even less chance of actually producing OLEDs soon than LG and Samsung, however. Not to say they won't get there (I suspect, in fact, that the more progress Samsung and LG make, the more it will benefit AUO and CMI), but it probably won't be especially soon.

It'd be nice if one of them specifically went after computer monitors.

Which, as we know with Samsung, means "sometime between July 1 and never". I mean, let's be honest, their on-time deliver track record is about as bad as LG's. My guess, for whatever little it's worth, November in Korea, not in 2012 in the U.S. Nothing more than a guess, however.

fact is they are showing us prototypes and there is no evidence either lg or sammy has ramped up mass production of 55" oled for retail sales later this year.

What does rogo know about the plants Panasonic, Samsung and LG have?

If you've read the threads, you can find lots of links showing all 3 of them making major investment in OLED lines of manufacture for TV sized panels.

It's not like Samsung, Sony, LG, and others aren't using OLED in lots of devices already.

PS, this is exactly how LCD TVs came to be. Do you suppose they just suddenly made 90 inch LCD tvs? No, it was 3 inch LCDs then 4 inch then 5 inch then 6 inch then 7 inch etc etc etc.

Samsung already could make a 55inch TV in the current manufacturing line they already have. The question isn't CAN the make it, the question is how fast can they improve and lower manufacturing costs.

Sony sold the PS3 for multiple years at a loss. Most new companies lose money for multiple years before they turn a profit.

There's zero chance OLED isn't coming to a TV near you. TV sales growth is flat. 3D hasn't pushed sales like they wanted. Every manufacturer is looking for something to spure sales. LG and Samsung think OLED can do it.

OLED TVs will be larger and less expensive then the first Plasma TVs. You know plasma TVs? Those TV sets nobody said would make it because they where to expensive?
