Why was the R550 marked down that much? Clearly, it was a damaged open box item?

Nope, they were new in box, I got there around 7 PM and they said they sold out around 3 PM. There were a number of them up front brand new in box, I asked and they said they were waiting delivery to customers from purchases earlier in the day. Awesome deal. They did still have one on display but didn't ask if they would sell it, picture looked very good.

Stopped by a couple of Best Buys to see if I could get a similar deal on the 632 as Fry's, both only had floor models left and they had been on the wall for 8 Mo's + and they wanted $3400. I wonder how the store months translates to home months, probably 8 or 9 to 1 so these sets have already been through many years of home life. No way I would touch on of these, especially for more than the new price at Fry's.

$3400 for display is way too much..I paid $3219 brand new in the box almost a year ago at Sears.....
I would expect $2400 for display or not ever buy one...
I am not even considering a display unit, 8-10 hours of use a day, 7 days a week, for 8+ months is like 6 years of home use. No thanks, I will find one new in box.

I was offered store model LC-80LE844U by Best Buy in Maryland for $2400 (+ 2 pairs of 3D Glasses and free shipping to home) after a lot of bargaining. I placed order to get it walmounted in my basement. I am just rethinking whether to keep the order or cancel. I never bought store display model before. Even though I bought 5 year Geek Squad Gold warranty, I am really unsure on store models.

for that price & the 5 year what's to lose , you don't like it you can return it .

Yes. Returning this monster is a big hassle. When I looked at store, this TV is displaying well barring few scratches on stand.

if the panel works Ok use duct tape to the rest with black pen
if it worse $1k discount for you or not only you can say ...

run test patterns if you can - use usb flash drive for it

I think the $2400 price not included 5 year Geek Squad Gold warranty, the store rep want to sell warranty that's why they sell the TV so low

So do stores still have these sitting around? I was planning to buy in about 3 months after I finish redoing the basement. I just moved and basement is still full of boxes and will need to be painted and recarpeted.

If you guys were in my position, would you get one of these full backlit or just get the new 857? What if I can only find a display model?

I wasn't planning on buying the TV so soon but if I can get a good deal then why not get a leftover 2012? I think if I can find it for under $3500 it will be worth jumping. Opinions welcome!

I'd buy a 2012 80" & sit on it , they are having PQ issues with the 875 , just as they did with the 2012 edge lighted 70" models . edge lighting is a step backward in tech & the only reason for going with edge lighting is they have lower production costs while raising retail cost .

Anyone else want to chime in?

I think my local best buy has one in stock. What price should I ask for?
I really liked to keep but I cancelled the order due to my basement issues. I need to complete few repairs before making it really livable. I will buy another large TV after all repairs and re-paint.

So if anybody is interested and near to the store, can quickly grab from BB store at Germantown, MD.

Hey all, I think I've found a phenomenal deal but wanted to check on here to see if there's something I'm missing. At my local BJs they have the Sharp 80" 633U for $1709 right now. It's $2309 with a $600 instant rebate... isn't $1709 an unheard of price? Is this an old discontinued model or something that they are trying to unload to make room for the new ones?

Thanks for the advice fellas!

That is a fantastic deal. I believe the 633 is nearly identical to the 632, which is the standard model number of the 80 inche from 2011-2012. Essentially this is two model years behind. Last years was the 844 2012-2013, which is nearly identical but offers 3D. This year 2013-2014 they came out with the 857 which is thinner and offers edge light instead of backlight. Most people prefer backlight because edge light has a tendency to have light bleed around the edges.

Please contact me! I am in VA and looking for one of these.

What was your order for? An 844? And what was the price?e

edit: nevermind, just saw your post. I'm not sure if I want a display model. I'm going to look for a new one first. An extra few hundred is worth it for a brand new tv.

BTW, do you guys recommend sharp warranty or best buy?

Does the 633 (costco model) have full array? If so run, dont walk to get that deal.

The model is being replaced but its with edge lit and all agree thats not what you want

Of course that kills me as I am in the process of trying to sell my 632......
The BJs is located in Wappingers Falls, NY if anyone is relatively close by and interested. Not sure if other BJs around the country carry the same model with the same deal.
this is amazing price.
If Sharp will start below $2k for 80" models than Sharp can take over almost whole LCD market, will not?
Where do you see this price for the Sharp 80" at BJ's? I went to the website and it is only showing the 650U at $3899.

The 633 is Full-Array.

A week ago, one of my two BJs had an 80 inch for $3,299. Under $2,000 is insane and the supply would probably last less than 2 weeks.

Something is very strange at $1,709. Maybe they had a lot of them and they weren't selling. I don't think BJs sells Refurbs, but when they get down to the last of them, the display model, they shave of several hundred.

The one I got is the 857 and paid $4034 from a best buy price match to a store in Nj selling it. Gets delivered when I move July 1st

I'm considering buying the 844U floor model since its the only one Costco has left. But the sticker price on the tv Is not reduced ($3,898) so I'm hesitant. I also noticed in reviews on CNet and Consumer Reports that Panasonic Plasmas still get the top ratings for picture quality.

Since this is a great place to get advice from experienced audio and videophiles..I ask the following question.

If you need a tv for your living room and wanted the biggest you could get with a budget of $4,000 but also wanted the tv to look great when watching football games and Bluray movies...would you opt for the 844u floor model or one of the 65" Panasonic Plasmas?

That is like asking someone what sportscar should I buy. However if you are looking for size and that is your number one factor, get the 80 inch. The panasonic plasmas are very nice, but the VT and ZT have a max size of 65 inches. 65 inches is big, but when you compare them to an 80 inch television they look small.

Can you set your priorities?
As mentioned 65" is the max plasma goes, vs 80" LCD
For sports and especially winter sports - plasma. LCD has DSE, you may not be impacted, but every LCD I tested had one or another. Plasma has better motion resolution, no ghosting as on LCD (Sharp isn't fastest panel for this matter)
If for PC and games - LCD as no Image Retention (burning in)
Watch at day and normal room (bad) lighting - LCD produces more light, however the last f8500 improved a lot
For dedicated BRay in dark room - plasma

Go into store and watch yourself.
It's subjective and you are the one who has to enjoy it, not some CNET or etc critic.

Hope it helps.

Mike
